Great video as always Joe! Ya know, bringing your arm back to guard position is maybe even more important than punch speed itself, or so my coach tells me. Says it causes the punch to have more whip, and I believe him, I always punch hardest whenever I throw 100% and bring my punching arm back to guard position 120% speed.MUCH more explosive.
@dar5405 жыл бұрын
Probably worth noting this will build strength not power. Power is the expression of force over time. You need to practise explosiveness after building an adequate strength base. When training explosiveness train low reps low sets regularly with a weight that you wont go to failure with. You dont want failure or lactic buildup you are just gradually increasing the recruitment pattern. Even explosive bag work is good to express the strength you have built. Keep it safe and smart though some people think power training is throwing shit mad fast.
@joeberger34413 жыл бұрын
True though strength is a precursor to power, and heavy reps tend to require maximal effort which translates to rate of force production (power). The explosive push-ups he did at the end were the closest thing to a pure power workout
@dar5403 жыл бұрын
@@joeberger3441 yes but even with explosive push ups I would add a vest to optimise speed strength or strength speed work within the power training protocol.
@joeberger34413 жыл бұрын
@@dar540 that's a fantastic variation. Another one i like is smith bar bench press throw. Just set up a bench press at the smith machine using just 40-60 percent of your max, and press the bar up as explosively as possible into the air (leaving your hands), catch it as it slides back down. And repeat. For short sets.

I heard isometrics also help with punching power, what's your take on that?
@joeberger34413 жыл бұрын
My humble opinion is that isometrics will help the muscles stiffen up upon impact of a punch. They won't help with rate of force production the way concentric lifting does but they do help with creating a more rigid structure to deliver the force generated by explosive movement.

problem is you are gonna need a hell lot of ballistic stretch(boxing related methods) after these weight execises, if not, then your stretch receptors in the muscle easily stiff out and connective tissues must tell your body to waste a lot of energy to get the muscles moving, and so will your overall boxing skill flow and balance overall. You just gonna make sure you have the time for all of the rehab work,which is guaranteed to more tricky with the more weight training you do, before any fight-specific training for competition
