I use Lutron Caseta for nearly all lighting in the house. I even wired one to start and stop my gas fireplace. It is instant and does not add load load to my wifi network. It is bulletproof. It works very well with Siri. Additionally, the switches can be used easily by those who are not interested in smart home features. It costs more but for me it is worth it.

@@TechWithBrett I really like the fact that you can replace a dozen or more WiFi devices/switches with Lutron switches and a single ethernet-connected hub so it keeps your network simpler. I would also think that Lutron switches might actually add some value to your house if you wanted to sell it because it's a known and respected electrical component company. It would also be quite easy for a reasonably savvy future owner to take it over an maintain it.

@TechWithBrett thank you for this video. I am just now upgrading some lighting and electrical in an old cabin with very few hardwired switches. I have a lot of questions and I hope it’s not too much. I am hopeful that maybe some of my detailed questions may help others here trying to do the same thing and just need some clarity. 1. Do I need a hub to operate the smart switch and or accessory switches/picos through the app or can I pair them directly to my wifi? 2. If upgrading several switches to operate through the app, do I only need one main diva switch and then all the rest accessory/pico remotes? Where do you recommend putting the main switch? Do I need a main switch in every location I plan to connect additional switches to, to control those same lights? 3. Difference between the accessory switches and pico remotes? Are accessory switches hardwired to replace a regular switch whereas picos can be mounted anywhere? 4. I have a large pendant light at the top of the stairway that operates off a switch on the wall upstairs. I’d like to add a control at the bottom of the stairs that turns on that light. Do I put a main switch upstairs and an accessory switch or pico downstairs? I do have another switch downstairs that controls another sconce on the wall in the stairway which is on a 3-way. I was planning on having my electrician splitting the box downstairs since I have one 3-way outlet and installing two accessory switches side by side. One which will pair to the lutron 3-way main switch to operate the wall sconce and the other to pair to the other lutron main switch to operate the hanging pendant light. Do I need two lutron main smart switches since they are two different light sources on two different hardwired switches or is there a way to somehow pair everything off of one main smart switch and then get accessory or picos for everything else? 5. I was also planning on adding interior dimmable string lights that plug-in to the wall but turn on/off on a dimmable switch. These are not hardwired string lights. They just plug in. How can I get them to turn off and on at a switch or using an app? I am just confused when I need to install a main switch vs an accesssory/pico. I know that was a lot. I hope you can help. My electrician is fabulous but he is not savvy in the smart world so I’m on my own to figure out what I need and then he’ll install it no problem! Thank you, thank you! 😊

1. You do need the Lutron Hub to connect them to the app and use with a voice assistant. 2. For every lighting circuit you will need one main switch. So if it is 1 switch that controls 1 light (Single Pole) it will need a Diva or Claro switch. If it is a circuit with 2 or more switches that controls the same light (3-Way) you will need 1 Diva or Claro and the other switches can be an existing mechanical switch, the Accessory Awitch, or the Pico remote. The Caseta Advanced Wiring guide can show you how to put the main switch at either end so it is up to you where that goes. 3. The Claro Accessory Switch can only be connected in line (using wiring) with a Diva Smart Dimmer or Claro Smart Switch as a second location and can only be used to turn the light on/off. It also allows your switches to match and does not count against the 75 device limit on the Lutron Hub. The Pico remote does not need any wiring, it can be paired to many different Caseta switches at the same time, it can dim a Diva switch from a second location, it does count as 1 device added to the Lutron Hub. 4. If the large pendant light only has 1 light switch you would change the change the main switch to a Caseta switch and then you can place a Pico smart remote next to the other switch downstairs with the wall plate bracket. Then you set up the Pico to control the Large Pendant light. If there is a switch that controls it in a 3-way downstairs, you could use an accessory switch. But if there is no wiring for 3-way, a Pico is needed. Yes you would need 2 Caseta Switches as mentioned before on Single Pole vs 3-Way. 5. This is one is a bit complicated. The best way to do this would be to have an electrician install dimmable LED strips that are wired into a low voltage box that is connected to a light switch. You can then swap the light switch for Diva Smart Switch to have dimmable control all in the same app. The second option would be to see if the Caseta Plug in Dimmer is able to work with LED string lights that just plug in and then could be controlled from a Pico remote. This most likely isn't possible because of how LED Strip lights work. The 3rd option would be to just have them on a separate system that uses a different style of remote that you could place next to your light switches so that you can easily turn on/off plus control the dimming. Hopefully that helps answer some questions! Let me know if you have more.

@@TechWithBrett Omg! I am so grateful for you! I think you probably just answered 100 people’s questions. Thank you so very much! The string lights are like the old fashion Edison string cafe style lights. They are going inside my cabin living room hanging from small hooks on structural ceiling beams. The cabin is a very rustic themed after the bourbon barrel so I’m trying to get some Pirates of the Caribbean vibe lights going inside for ambiance. I am adding flickering flame bulbs to some of my indoor sconces as well and want to be able to turn them on before a guest arrives to have the whole experience. I know crazy but it’s going to be so awesome! Lol I have an open coffee bar niche between the living room and kitchen that my electrician added an addition two outlets in the wall inside to which can be my starting point for my string lights… but I have to be able to turn them off and on from an app from afar. If I just plug them in without the use of a switch on the wall how would I be able to control from an app? If my electrician is able to tap in to an outlet and run wiring up the wall to add a switch, could that switch then control the lights when the string lights are plugged into that outlet? I’m pretty sure my electrician could answer that question… But I kind of want to wrap my head around it and understand the process myself. Then we could install a Claro smart switch where that new switch is? Thank you again… it would be so cool and so helpful if you could to a video walking through different scenario and application set ups to help people get started. It’s taken me over a month just to weed through everything to figure out what I probably need to order! Lol 😂 👍

You're welcome! Thanks for the details on the string lights. Do they have a ground on the plug or are there just 2 prongs? If so you could use the Lutron Plug In Dimmer that is a smart outlet that can be put in those new outlets. It will allow you to dim the lights and you can place a Dimmable Pico remote somewhere to control them and have them connected to the app. If that doesn't work the other option. Would be to have one of the outlets be wired to a light switch where you add the Claro swotch to turn them on and off. That sounds like a really fun project! I am planning on doing an upcoming video where I go through the steps to swapping out all the different type of lights in one room with Lutron switches that will hopefully be pretty helpful.

Lutron is mega bucks. The dimmer in my bath recently blew out( fried triac I think) and I wanted a dual dimmer for an incandescent fixture and an LED fixture so I can dim them separately but one that fits in a single gang box and uses a Decora style plate. It was like $65 at HD and that one is not even smart. Also I am not really a fan of smart switches now that I just recently had 2 GE Z wave plus switches go bad on me. I suspect it was due to a bad power supply, they were probably cutting corners and using cheap caps but I never did autopsy the switches to find out. GE was good and sent me new switches free of charge and I didn't even need to send the old ones back. The new switches are redesigned, the funny thing is that one went out a few months after the other one, both times I got sent a replacement, but the first one was different than the original and then the replacement for the second one was different than the first replacement, they keep redesigning the same switch, with the second replacement the switch lights up when the switch is on the old ones and the first replacement don't. I think it is far less headache to replace smart bulb if it goes bad than to replace switches. especially for these large multi gang boxes, because sometimes it can be hard to stuff the smart switch in there with all the wires. But I bet Lutron uses top end caps and doesn't have the internal power supply failures that other switches have, or at least they better for the prices they charge.

Yes you can. If you install the switch on the light switch for your porch lights you can automatically have it turn on at Sunset and then turn off a certain time later. This will adjust with the daily sunset time change in your area.

If you have a large home will the hub work throughout the entire home? I am covered in all areas of my home with wifi.
@TechWithBrett
@TechWithBrett 7 ай бұрын
If the Lutron Hub is placed in the center of your home it should be enough depending on the size of your home. If you are noticing certain items are failing to connect properly you can easily add a Caséta Repeater or a Caséta Plug-In Lamp Dimmer (which has a repeater built in) to your home to extend the range.

What about the 30 feet range of the hub ? Is it good or bad ? I think 30 feet is very small, its about half any of my floors and I have 3 of them !

Is is 30 ft diameter so if place in the right location it most likely will be plenty. I placed mine on the bottom level and it still worked 2 stories up. I did have one corner of the home that had a bad signal and I purchased a Lutron Plug-in Dimmer which is a range extender and haven't had any issues since.

@@TechWithBrett so I guess the 30 feet is more a protection from lutron that in a real use situation. Good to know because my Kasa switches are kind of acting bad lately, even thought I do think its more likely to come from the Smartthings hub than from the wifi range, and I am considerong the Lutron iot's , eventually with a Homey hub or a hubitat setup.

To integrate with Harmony you do need the hub. That is what gives it the smart functions. The other option is to just use the dimmers with a Pico Smart Remote but that doesn't integrate into the remote.

I have a modem from the ISP (Spectrum) (with no built in router). I use google nest as my router. The google nest wifi that is located next to the modem has two ethernet ports on the back side. Both are being used. One port is used to connect the modem from the ISP and the other port is used to connect an ethernet straight to my desktop computer (so i don't have to use wifi for the desktop computer). I do have four (4) other google nest wifi points spread throughout the house. Can I connect the Caseta hub by ethernet cable to anyone of those other nest wifi points, or does it have to be connected to the actual google wifi point that is etherneted to the modem from the ISP? (which I can't, because I already use it to connect the desktop computer to by ethernet).

Great question. From what I understand that will work just fine because it just needs to connect to the Internet which the Router point provides. Another option is to purchase a network switch to connect more devices at the main router. More info here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/rYK0pWyHq5urers

I don't understand the point of this video. You have covered all this before in previous videos. You have previously convinced me to add Lutron Caseta stuff to my home along with the Eufy locks and Deco routers but no new ground covered here. Currently have 2 Divas and 3 Picos installed but for me, Lutron is going to be limited to 3 ways, places I want to create a 3 way and high wattage fixtures. Otherwise Kasa dimmers are a very nice switch and work fine providing you have a decent mesh network. Still waiting on the new house smart home tour!

A 30’ radius for the hub is a non starter for me, as is their architecture decision that requires the purchase of a repeater or a dimmer to extend the network. Lutron needs to discover self optimizing device meshing networks, where each device can operate as either a slave or as a remote repeater. Too low tech for a premium product.
@TechWithBrett
@TechWithBrett 11 күн бұрын
That is the technical specifications but they have that for optimal experience. I have seen them extend further without issues.

@@TechWithBrett it would also depend on attenuation of the radio signal by obstacles like walls, including the materials used in their construction, the frequency of the radio signal any interference on the frequency band, whether it’s spread spectrum and, finally, the directivity of the gain of the antenna patterns on each side of the communication path. I wonder why didn’t decide on using a power line communication path, if not a wireless mesh architecture? Most of the devices being controlled are directly connected to the home’s power distribution anyway.
