I keep worm castings in a plastic bucket, then put a paper bag over the top and throw a string around the rim to seal it. You want it to have air and moisture flow, which the paper bag does perfect. Another thing to be careful of is pests laying eggs and the paper bag keeps flies and even seeds from local plants blown by the wind from getting in. Keeping casting aerobic and free from pests and weeds is the battle and this is an easy, cheap and chemical free way of protecting your castings.

I had a bag of bu's blend that got forgotten about for way to long under a bunch of amendments and coco blocks. When I opened it, it had a bunch of worms alive and well. I did my best to save as many as possible (beginning of the year 2019) and when spring came around I placed the worm in my living soil raised bed covered with straw. Now 2021 I have possibly tens of thousands of worms and the top 6 inches is almost all castings. Sometimes when I plant in it in early spring it's so rich it will fry baby plants and a couple will get burnt so bad they will stall out till mid summer. I'm kind of debating on just turning it in to a outdoor worm bin as how well it can pump out castings plus now it is filled with life from beetle larvae, pill bugs, earth and red worms, Centipedes, spides, spring tails and who knows what else . Thanks for always sharing the love for growing been following your way since your first interview with dude grows, Then found you on ads shortly after.

I once worked in a community greenhouse and had to go down a research rabbit hole. Our spinach had white crystals on it. We were over watering and the temp/pressure change at night was causing xylem to be squeezed out of the stomata.
@BuildASoil3 жыл бұрын
Spinach is literally COATED with calcium oxalate! We freaked out when growing it in our greenhouse. Turns out you don't want to eat only spinach or the build up can hurt your body. Did proper watering lower the visible level of Calcium Oxalate? Thanks!
@Magpyro3 жыл бұрын
Yes, as long as we watered in the a.m. the bed was almost dry by night and no xylem squeeze on any new growth.

17:50 Total sense here. I believe its called principal based learning. If i was giving somone a hairdcut, i would explain to them why i cut their hair a certain way and why it works and why it might not work. Factors headshape, hair texture, hair type etc. Instead of just giving the answer (a haircut) your giving them the principals so in the future they can make their own evaluations.

Hi thank you very much for your efforts Jeremy. My question is, what is the general advice you can give for feeding soil? What do we feed it? How often? For cannabis and normal vegetables and other garden systems using living soil? I feel like I’m missing something here. I got my soil together, planted my cover crop, and planted my medicinal plants. But you’re always adding this stuff to the soil for the cannabis and I’m feeling confused on what and when to feed the soil. Perhaps you could shed some light thank you soooooo much love love

@michaeldvorak81403 жыл бұрын
What you are calling predator mites is a worm bin may be an actual red or white mites that are feeding on the decaying vegetation or fruit you are feeding the worms. They like higher moisture content than worms and if at extreme populations are extremely hard to get rid of. However these mites are not the mites that are attracted to or eat live plants 🌱. As a former pest control operator, horticulturalist, and now retired worm farmer I never worry about them in my garden at all. Castings should be kept in any type of containers with one or two very small holes at the top to breathe, but never in a sealed bag. If buying for use at later time then perforate top, so the biology of the castings stays alive for close to a year.
@BuildASoil3 жыл бұрын
Yes! There are predator mites and some decomposers. All are great in the soil and none of those are usually a concern for the foliage. That being said, great point about the moisture as it could be an indicator of watering habits that need improvement.

This is the best series 9n the subject I've yet to see. I'm learning so much. I run a 3 tent perpetual harvest system. A 2x4 lit with 200w t5 cfl for propagation and seedlings, a 4x4 lit with a 315 cfl for vegging to flower size, and a 5x5 lit by a 630w led bar light to flower in. I'm currently using rain science grow bags due to ease of rotation. My question is, is it feasable to transfer 1-2gal pot sized plants into either earth boxes or a bed that stays in flower? I don't want to do start to finish in a single tent if I don't have to, but I really want to start re using my soil, and seeing it improve with each cycle...

You mentioned doing a monocrop for someone that that can have the plant count. Let me get this straight. You are saying 1 gallon is best and have 1 plan per square foot? If I top dress with craft blend to add back any depleted nutrition in a no till raised bed, it would be adding everything back (even the nutrition that is not yet depleted) and it would eventually become unbalanced, correct? In the short term, it will give the plants the nutrition they need, but will the unbalance cause any issues over time? How often would I need to test the soil and balance it back out? Basically, I'm wondering if I can just top dress craft blend season after season and not worry about the npk value in the bed?

I keep missing the live videos but here's a question that I hope you read - Is it possible to do a complete grow, from Seed/Clone, all the way to harvest, by simply top dressing with castings made different ways? For example, I was thinking of having not one, but two different worm bins. One for composting foods that are rich in N and Micros, and the other that are higher in P/K, and simply using one casting for the veg cycle, and one for the flower cycle. Is this possible? Appreciate it in advance!

about the 3x3 would that then mean making a large grow medium? and how many gallons would you use for that? Or setting up 9 individual containers? Also I'm living in Asia and ants are a huge issue, are they a problem if you grow indoors in living soil or should I not worry to much?

With the apogee USB meter you have a spot to put in hours of light and it spits put live dli calculation. Never will say par anything just umol though. Just a heads up
@mo_____27193 жыл бұрын
umol is the measurement for photosynthetic photon flux density (PPFD) while photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) is the actual spectrum of light being measured for intensity. The Apogee calculator refers to the measurement taken as PAR reading since you are quantifying an area's photon intensity within the photosynthetic light spectrum.

Thanks Jeremy! Question? You've said you dont prefer RO water because the ppms are stripped, if we are using RO is there a simple way to add some life back into it or inoculate it to where it's more preferable? Thanks! Love all the work you guys are doing, keep it going guys!
@TakaHebi1102 жыл бұрын
found this: If none of the above options could be used, Reverse Osmosis is a way to go. RO water is very clean and usually has the ideal pH levels but because most nutrients will be filtered out almost completely. Therefore, the water has insufficient properties to exchange ions so to be able to use RO water, calcium and magnesium or often known as cal-mag must be added before use. Notes pH down = Apple Cider pH Up = Baking Soda Cal-Mag alternative for RO water = Coconut Juice (2 tsp : 5 liters of water)
