I had to comment once you said "I know some commenters say they don't like MIDI" lol. I remember in my youth, when MIDI was big, I found it extremely frustrating when I wanted to find an authentic song but instead got the MIDI version of it. Because of this, I grew a resentment toward it for many years...until you came along. Suddenly, I have a new found respect for it and it hits the nostalgia vibes for sure. I don't mind MIDI when it comes to games, just not the knock off music of actual songs (if that makes sense). Anyway, I can certainly understand why you have a love for MIDI - and thank you for changing my mind about it after all this time. I still think it sounds lousy in comparison to actual instruments being played, but it's still cool nonetheless.

On the subject of the MT32 being on channel 2, that's an easy fix: Use the following procedure to change the default receive channels of the MT-32 from channels 2-9 and 10 to channels 1-8 and 10: 1) While holding down MASTER VOLUME, press PART 5. 2) Press PART 1. You might consider picking up a used Behringer DEQ2496 in place of that disappointing equalizer. That will give you a legitimate graphic equalizer and lots of fun flashing lights/buttons to play with. They're not that expensive and would provide what you're looking for. Anyone who doesn't appreciate this labor of love is either too young to appreciate or too ill informed to understand how significantly convenient it is to have a single behemoth of a MIDI rack that can playback multiple formats of MIDI music by the turn of dials or by bay flicks of switches to enjoy. These individual external MIDI devices were EXPENSIVE back in the day and you were lucky if you could afford even generic solutions that imitated their sounds that were built into store bought PC setups back in the day one at a time...which were also expensive despite the generic price tag. All of these sounds that people find out of taste today will make a major comeback in years to come...mark my words 😇🧐

29:44 OH! So *thats* how they made the engine sound effects in those old games. :D

Incidently, it's also how interactive music systems could reflect events in games like X-Wing, which is something of the hidden strengths of midi.

Totally beats my CM-32L and TX802 setup. Love that DX7 sound, though.

Just what I needed, just received another Atari ST today, and want to display them with a midi setup in the music studio I'm building, so I can tell to young musicians - in my day this is how we did MIDI :D

Watch this all the way to the credits (or skip to them). kzbin.info/www/bejne/g4HQo2qaocd7o5Y Even recently people were arguing that the ST has better timing than newer computers which are probably too busy running the Anti-Virus to get the notes out on time.

I love finding old electronic music instruments that have midi ports, it’s always fun listening to what different companies drum machines and keyboards come up with, sometimes I find devices that just really know how to party. I love midi sounds, and are salivating over your midi rack that. looks like some serious fucking fun.

At least your equaliser didn’t say „Equaliser“ on the level indicator screen xD

Tell me I'm not the only one who shit themselves after seeing that synth set up. Damn LGR, I knew you were a tech nerd, but I didn't know you were a music nerd as well.

The Kawai one looks like some garage band playing in the neighbour's house, haha

Who doesn't like midi!? There is a live quality to it that is so much more *living* then simple recordings, even if it's just a softsynth (Granted there are fantastic soundfonts available these days). Certainly is fun, I'm jealous, a portable rack like that is such a fantastic idea.

This is so amazing - the rack looks 2x better next to the PC and using the mixer to switch between modules is an absolute game changer. Additive synthesis using MIDI samples? Mind-blown. Couldn't believe the difference between the Akai and Kawai - it's like night and day. The Akai is really tight, like it's better suited for house music, while the Kawai is just METAL!! Great video.

Seriously, if games had sounded like Doom did at the end there I would have played so much more as a kid. Sound is way more important than people think.

It is sad. The game devs made music on pro or semi pro midi equipment and gamers just got to listen to the Adlib sound at best.

Agreed! One of the biggest complaints for POSTAL 1 & 2, was that there is no ambience or mood or theme music. It made the whole environment feel, lacking, empty, unfinished.

I played Doom in the 90's without even knowing it had music, for some reason my computer didn't play the music, just the SFX.
