Thinking about the next generation of Hot Rodders just starting out, I would love to see a multiple series engine build show and demonstrating what to do when things don't quite work out right. For example, what to do when the main bearing clearances are smaller / bigger than originally thought...what do you do. $800 will get you a camshaft kit. But if the engine has decent compression, decent oil pressure, and you aren't going to rev it to the moon, a camshaft in an LS2 (6.0 L) could get you very close to a 500hp, streetable motor - with headers. Understand everyone doesn't like sharing their combos due to competitors, but just wondering.. haven't done a price breakdown of this engine recipe but given you having the same base build with little more compression, and few minor part changes and netting what 100ft lbs more tq as well as hp would be neat to see the comparison with costs compared to this build . I guess what I'm saying is a dollar cost average on hp with your build compared to this one..kinda cool to see a cheaper variant putting more hp and tq or where the best hp gain per dollar is best spent on a given area..hopefully this makes sense lol

I miss "the old days" when magazines were the source of information. They had many comparisons instead of single-source part builds. This helped determine what parts you needed for your application, so you could save a little money. If you do some reading you'll find that the 317 heads are good for low end and not appropriate for much else. They're great truck heads, but you wouldn't want to use them on a race engine. Love how these guys just spray the lube all over the springs, missing the valve-rocker surface, and I guess this was a stroker kit that took this to 406 cu in. Love to pair that bottom end with my stock top end. A nice flat torque curve is best, and this Summit kit does a good job without mixing and matching parts from different sources. I wonder how much this build cost, maybe $10,000?

One question; I've only ever seen the show advertise & recommend certain pre-assembly lubes & thread lock products. But ! What are your preferred engine oils ? Do you refrain from mentioning specific brands because there are so many brands who could be valuable potential show sponsors. Followers and friends please jump in with your choices, and why. I bought a 93 Chevrolet Cheyenne in 95, with the 4.3 engine & 100k miles. It had a holed piston and cracked head (but it only cost $500). Anyhoo, I took that teardown opportunity to meticulously mic and record every measurable tolerance and compare them with factory specs. Everything was still factory-spec-identical!! I rebuilt the engine and put on an additional 243K miles, over a 25 year period (with only high $ synthetic oil). I tore the engine down 2 years ago, and all of the mic readings were virtually the same as when I started. So, what oils do you guys use for your favourite engines ?

The problem with really high reving motors are: 1) They beat up valve springs. and 2) they make no power at low rpms. Sucks to have to rev to 4500+ rpm just to beat the stock Honda Accord next to you. Old school motors have about a 4500rpm power band. So if you are peaking at 8500, your probably not making usable power below 4000. Make that a high winding 302.... on the street, it will be pretty much undrivable. I was young and dumb once (now just old and.... never mind), have a car that will not idle at all and trying to deal with loose torque converters and driving on highway etc. with no power brakes (or worse, power brakes that are spotty) and well, when you get older, you want that air conditioning. Cheaper and funner to build bigger motor OR boosted motor.

@@harveylong5878 My understanding that filming can be grueling on these shows. 10 hr days for weeks on end etc. Not for everyone.

It’s no slouch for sure but I’m trying to figure out where the tq went… trickflow sells those head in a top end kit for ls3s 376ci and it makes like 580hp/525 ft lbs with an stock intake and smaller cam. Given there’s 30 more ci here should have at least made more tq. I’m guessing that sheet metal intake and slightly larger camshaft threw away some of the tq and wasn’t enough to make it rev or make more high end hp. Nice strong build but not what I was expecting…

13.0 fuel for power enrichment little on the lean side .would have liked to see what it would have done at around 12.5 like the rest of the world would run on pump gas in a ls .stock computer and hptuner and truck intake would have got you just as much for cheap. That would impress people more then the wasted cash and not big numbers to back it .

That's it, LQ4 6.0 is coming out of my 2004 Denali XL, only has 140,000 on it and I have to have a similar build in this ol beast! Wife may not like it though

HELLO I always see them, I enjoy seeing how they build the engines, but I would like to know if they do it with V6 engines for example the 231 from GM buick. Greetings

I recently bought my dads 09 Sierra 1500 sle. I decoded the vin to find that it should have the LMG 5.3, but I noticed that it had the 862 heads. I asked my dad and he informed me my younger brother burned up the motor in 2019 and the only thing he could get in time was a factory reject, because it had the wrong angle on the cylinders, so it was bored and sleeved. He said he thought it was supposed to go in an 09 Sierra HD. I don't think it's flex fuel, so I believe I have an LY6 with 862 heads ...with less than 100k on it. 😃 I'm researching to find out how I can confirm if true or not.

You guys didn't go over the oil pump hitting the Double Roller Chain!! On an LS engine, a Double Roller timing setup WILL hit the oil pump, or if spacers are used, then oil pump bolts WILL hit the cover. 2nd, It moves the Oil pickup tube forward by 1/8in, so the stock pickup doesn't fit correctly after that. Why didn't you go over ANY of this?

Hey I have a 2003 Chevrolet Silverado Z-71 4X4 could I put a super charger on it with it having just over 207000 miles on it I’m not talking about the route style I’m talking about the one that looks like a turbo charger

You can throw a ProCharger (belt driven centrifugal supercharger) on anything you wish. But without a rebuild, borrowed time ;)

The 317 are cathedral port. The trick flow heads were rectangle port. If they tested a stock rectangle port head , the flow would have been very close
