We are Heather, Bradey, Alexa and Chloe. We purchased an abandoned stone barn in the foothills of the Italian Alps and we are working together as a family to renovate and restore this old stone barn into our dream home.

She is a great piece of sunshine that lights up my day ❣️🌞☀️ I am so happy to meet positive people in my life, they compensate for the grumpy naggers that there are too many of in this world. 😊 Brady and Heather are a power couple and I love their sweet girls. It is great to see such a happy family. ❤❤❤

Having actually lived in old stone walls, I fully understand the need to drywall the kitchen, and probably the bathrooms for sure. It’s difficult to keep those stone walls clean, especially on a kitchen with the cooking grease.😊 good choice!

I have been following your stories for several weeks now. The problem with pipes that drain rainwater can be solved as you explained yourself, but because you want to make a terrace that is a lot higher, you can also opt for a less labor-intensive solution. I have no idea how much higher the terrace will be, but I would leave the old drainage pipe in place and lay a new drainage pipe at the current level so that you do not have to dig out. The terrace elevation will cover the new drain pipe. You can connect this new pipe to the current rain drain on the roof. You will have to replace the drain pipe under the road and if possible, I would put this pipe in a sleeve so that you can replace the pipe if necessary during later installations. Good Luck

I hope you don’t mind me for mentioning this, Here in the UK we would call the open space leading from your house, a balcony or patio area and the doors are called patio doors. Very many thanks for sharing your incredible journey with us, lovely to see you today Heather, x hopefully we will see the girls with you again soon too, with lots of love and big hugs to you all. We don't always call similar things the same, but in America, we say patio, or balcony and patio doors also. I think Brady is calling it a terrace because his property is on a series of terraces, therefore he is carving out yet another smaller terrace on the side of their mountain. Balcony, patio, or terrace ...they're all going to have magnificent views!!

I am sure someone may have already mentioned this. Regarding your drain in the back of the house, I urge you to put in a screen or filter of some sort where it runs into that pipe from the back of the house. We have something similar at the entrance of our garage. No filter/screen where it runs into the septic drain. Over the years it's filled in with soot, dirt, leaves, everything imaginable. So it will clog up eventually. Tricky part is finding that happen medium where it's large enough to allow good/fast flow but small enough to capture the bad stuff. I guess you will never be able to filter out the small soot/dirt as a filter that small would prevent good flow. Just another armchair quarterback watching your channel and making suggestions 🙂

Before digging out for downspouts, consider carefully distributing water on terraced gardens (veg or otherwise) on the side of your house. How handy to grow a kitchen garden, steps away from the kitchen. You can create an excess drainage pipe from garden, much less labor intensive.

Gee…. thinking all of those suggestions are pretty good! Water goes wherever it can get, so warding off that entry is good. I remember hearing about fans running to aid in drying is also excellent. Your work ethic is so fabulous, and your patience! A drystack wall is obviously like seive! Dirt sifts in, creatures and seeds love that kind of habitat, frankly. So, working hard to provide protection from all that is very astute……aaaand provides decorating relief from monotony of the stones. Good work to take such care and to review suggestions value/perceptions first. A wonderful effort, a great team……Ginger from Michigan

I have an idea about drainpipes. Take old pipe out from anywhere on outside wall. Add new one and add new drainage. You can drain via back of house! You won’t have to excavate or destroy outside area. Just raise it up how you want. Easier and cheaper and house will be done sooner! 😅

I'd love to hear how their schooling is going & how it may be different from the American system. In Bavaria in the 70s (when my family traveled through there), I know that they still had crosses on all the public classroom walls ...not sure if they still do. But Bavaria was more traditional than other parts of Germany. I wonder if the girls are pretty fluent in Italian yet ...and does the family watch entertainment and child-friendly movies in Italian to help their progress? Things like that.

It would be hard to decide how much stone to cover. I’ve seen places where they cover most of the inside walls and places where they kept most of the original stone. In my opinion… I think something in the middle is the best. But it really depends on the persons personality and lifestyle. I think 1-2 stone walls in each room would be magical. But in the room with the fireplace… all stone walls would be awesome. Can’t wait to see.

Two simple questions: Those of you who have been accustomed to gallons, ounces, miles, etc., how do you like the metric system? Do your daughters attend Italian schools? And how do they get along with the teachers? I will add another thing that came to mind now: why don't you channel the rainwater drainage pipes that start from the roof gutters into an underground storage container (there are many on the market of various sizes and capacities). If I were you, I would choose one of 1 cubic meter (1m x 1m x 1m, i.e. 1000 litres), I would bury it, I would equip it with a disposable overflow and an electric pump to draw water and use it in cases of emergency (periods of drought or otherwise to water the garden or non-human consumption uses).
