I know how hard this was. We did the same with my dad! Ours had a basement as well. I learned how to lay cinder block! We built our home, barn & milking parlor. Set cedar post (by hand) on 12 acres. My dad was diagnosed with terminal cancer before all this began, so he was having Chemo & Radiation throughout the building. He was a tough, strong willed man like yourself. You should be very proud. Just sold my home/property of just shy of 50 years….bought the land at 18, helped build my 1300 sq ft. 3bed, 2 bath at 19, and sold it a couple months ago. 😢 Too old to maintain it anymore and kids didn’t want it…..so many memories. The sidewalk I mixed and hand poured concrete has my children’s hand and footprints in when they were 2 & 6 yrs old, 36 years ago. Seems like yesterday I was up till 2 am with spotlights hanging Sheetrock! 😞 My brain knows it was the right thing to do, but my heart hasn’t stopped sobbing yet…. I hope they love their accomplishment and make many wonderful memories here….i am sure their children will keep it in the family as they will have great memories of this amazing family endeavor.

My dad, brother and step mom (sister was a baby) and myself built a beautiful 3600 sq ft ,French farm house, home back in the 1990s. Unfortunately, I am the only one still living now… long story I won’t get into but I no longer own the house. I do still own the 8 acres surrounding the house on all sides all the way up to the front porch thanks to dad 😊. It kills me to not be able to share the house with my children now to show them the house my dad and family built hoping one day to leave it to them. I hope you find peace. The Lord moves us to where we need to be for reasons we may not understand. I say that bc it’s true and bc one of daughters wouldn’t have met the father of my grandson and more… I would still go home no doubt but if I had a choice to do it again, I would still move so I could have the people I have now despite what I no longer have… it will work out.

I was raised by my grandparents who survived and thrived in the depression I learned valuable skills and lessons grandpa farmed a totally sustainable farm with gardens crops animals grandma sewed gardened canned I would not trade those skills and days. Yes it was hard going out every morning and breaking ice for the cattle and processing meat, so great to live with family that was God first in all their ways instilled values and morals. This is a great dad teaching his children valuable skills and lessons. They will use these skills and lessons throughout their lives. I pray he teaches them God first. Lord God Yahweh The Creator of All is to be respected and loved and obeyed. These children will so enjoy their new home they worked hard as a family to build. It is great to see a family work together.

As plumbers we end up doing most of the other stuff anyway, moving studs, walls, breaking and pouring concrete, electricians can move their little wires anywhere, but they always just spiderweb them through the wall, and disregard our pipes that have specific places and grades, and they aren't really that "bendy", Plumbers, most important and specific job, always shoved to the bottom of the totem pole on a job site.

Homeschool parent here: the amount of math and science involved in building a home and installing everything related to it is insane to think about. Throw in mechanics and equipment repair/operation and kids will know more in a few years than all 12 years of “normal” schooling combined! Not to mention everything else these kids learned. I designed and built my house almost exclusively on my own. 2,000 sq ft with a 2000 sq ft finished basement, with a 2000 sq ft pole barn, on 20 acres, 7 acres I cleared and graded. I did not drill my well nor lay carpeting. It took me 2-1/2 years working evenings and weekends, cost $60,000 and.is currently valued at $500,000. Well worth the sweat equity and remaing debt free.

I live in the log house my mom and her friends built when I was 5. Anyone can do it. The only electricity we had was 1 light in bathroom and the water heater and stove. We used kerosene lamps everywhere else.In 1987 we added electrical outlets.It wasn’t anything fancy but we were a family and had our own home. I bought the house 25 years ago and remodeled it and added on to it.

Whether it be saving money and how to go about that or listing what you are able to do on the house build verses contracting the work out for the stuff you don't want to do. We are rooting for you!

In my state, we have agriculture for 2 years which includes greenhouse work, building trades which is what you see here. What kind of schools are in your area? Not sure water purity warrants its own class but I do belive chemistry covers it pretty well. You can take home economics which shows them how to boil water. Take that principal and add in a condensation catch and you can funnel out some pretty clean water I would think. Ands like Emily below says, they have an auto class in school too.

The family dynamic is amazing. Only a few moments of kids needing instructions but mostly independently working. Every child has a job specifically for them. You teaching them the trades and paying them has planted the seeds for them to be self sufficient and successful ❤️

You seem to have forgotten all the permits and fees that have to be paid to government paracite workers long before 1st scoop of dirt is shoveled. Realistic wise? A no frills brand new 1,500sft home starts at around $250,000+ ( on small lot) in states with modest lot prices and modest paracite money grabber fees to actually build a house.

Absolutely no reason. I have just broke into the bottom of middle income and own 3 rental properties and my own home and 3 vehicles. We don’t live like the jones and buy nearly everything used. Most people’s problem is buying things they don’t need and could live without.

My family built our home that I grew up in and they still live in today. I'm now 48, we have lots of pictures of my brother and myself around 8 and 9 years old working one the house. I learned so much from that experience. There's not much I figure out or fix. I've moved a lot in my life and I'm I've always helped my neighbors out fixing or helping them build things. When they ask how I know all this stuff I tell them I've been doing it since I was 8 lol. They often don't believe me till I proudly show them pictures.

man, brings back memories. as a kid my family did residential construction. the smell of the wood, nails, saw dust, sheet rock, the dropping and jingle of the nails and screws. the echoes and sawing sounds. i miss it so much. i wish i would have stayed in it. these kids are gonna remember this for the rest of their loves. its awesome.

I enlisted in the Air Force at 18, retired after 21 years. Worked another 17 years in corporate America and I'm now retired again at 56. Don't associate yourself with negativity. My dad and I built our (well, my) first house during summer break when I was 13 years old. 1600 sq ft addition on a 960 sq ft house built in 1906. I framed quite a few houses in my teens, worked as an independent home inspector for ten years, and am now a city code inspector. Forever grateful for the time we worked on that house, and the stories and experience that came from it. Great job with what looks like a great family. Happy for you all.
