Good points! With the clean though, I find elbow issues creep in over time and volume (tennis/golfer's elbow)..so no immediate saftey mechanism. Low bicep issues too especially on improper drops with a slight bend in the elbow. I find the clean harder to learn than the swing. I've been doing S&S with a 24kg (20 sessions in now) and no back issues... was also practicing cleans, but noticed low bicep and golfer's elbow niggles. Biggest concern for me at age 50 is overuse injuries over time with kettlebells.

As Hec mentions, the clean is self-correcting. If you're experiencing Elbow/bicep issues , chances are your technique could use a little help. Im 41 and might have 500,000 cleans under my belt and no elbow issues to speak of. If the bicep is bothering you, you want to be careful that in the drop , you're allowing the arm to fully straighten out at the bottom as you go into the backswing. I used to let my arm stay bent in the back swing too and was warned by a Master SFG at my SFG 1 Cert that I would tear my bicep or destroy my elbow out if I kept it up...I stopped immediately ;-)

@stephane, exactly what @edgeofstrengthocala said. The clean is giving you feedback that you're likely pulling the bell out of your hips which is adding stress to your bicep tendon. 1.) If you think/look a little further upstream, most people lead with the hand which result in pulling the bell out of your hips. 2.) If you approach your training as practice, you can practice leading through the hip and elbow (preventing many of these problems from happening in the first place).
