Thanks for the video. With the old backhoe stranded in the backyard, I bought a new injector pump + a sealing kit. I thought that once the old pump is removed, I might as well try to clean and reseal it. It went really well. My 13 year old son was in charge of the iPad, playing the video step by step, while I was getting my hands dirty. The pump was all clogged up with rust from the old fuel tank. Yesterday, I installed the old pump again and the 50 year old Perkins started right up. I have just returned the new pump and saved 700 USD. 😀

Thanks for the step by step video. I ordered the same Sparex CAV rebuild Kit you used in the video. I was able to remove and reseal the fuel injector pump with confidence, on what was originally my dads Massey Ferguson 255 tractor Model year 1978. I made note of the timing position inside the pump and reassembled everything the same. I also replaced the old fuel lift pump. Changed the fuel filter which I last changed about 30 years ago. Bleed & primed the fuel lines as directed from the original owner's manual. The tractor started back up without any difficulty. The only thing the Sparex kit didn't provide was a new gasket for the timing chain inspection cover. I looked on line and nobody had one . My inspection cover has a 4 bolt pattern. I bought some sheet gasket material and made my own gasket. For the fuel lift pump I had to order the rubber fuel line gaskets off of Amazon since the new lift pump didn't come with them. Take care. That CAV pump is basically a slight modification of the Roosa Master/Stanadyne pumps used on all kinds of diesels here in the states, so this vid basically covers those for the most part as well. The differences are in the injection advance and fuel stops mostly, along with governor linkages under the top cover. The basic guts, however, are the same beasty, lol. The Ford IDI v8s (and the International IDI v8), GM 6.2 and 6.5 mechanical injection, even the Olds 350 diesel use practically the same as this CAV. Great vid! Nice step by step coverage, superb shooting, and great practical hints!
@m16ty Жыл бұрын
The Roosa Master and the CAV are very similar from a mode of operation standpoint, but some aspects of the pumps are very different. Pretty much everything under the top cover is vastly different. The drive on the 2 pumps is very different too. At least the CAV doesn't have the dreaded flex ring that comes apart.

Thanks for this video. It helped me fix a problem I had on an engine that had been sitting for a couple of years. Fuel was getting in no problem, but not coming out the injector ports. I checked the end cap gubbins, which was all OK. I figured it had to be the pistons were stuck in, not enough pressure from the lift or vane pump to push them out. I removed the fuel in line (on the end cap) and poked an airgun on my air compressor into the hole (convenient that the connector has a rubber gasket!), then pressurised whilst turning it over. Boom, the injector ports started ejecting fuel, connected everything back up, and she now works perfectly!

Your video just solved my issue. I was driving myself crazy bleeding my 1960's MM G450 tractor and sure I was going to have to send in my injection pump. I could not get the fuel from the second bleed to the Injector lines. The tractor had not been run for more than five years, I got it started and moved out of the way for another project, the lift/primer pump leaked terribly. Replaced that and the filters and bled it many times. No fuel at the injectors. Tapped a few friends and called the dealer for help, everyone was of the same suggestion, "AIR". I bled it again and again. Pulled it several times over two miles. It was like the kill was pulled. Thanks to your video, I got the courage to open the cap and eventually found that the Metering Valve was not moving freely. I cleaned it with WD40 and that removed the film from the old fuel. Was able to bleed it cranking it and it is back in motion. Thank you, thank you, thank you.

Hi Lance, I finally was able to get my CAT416 started. After working on it for 3 days I finally figured out what was causing my issue. I purchased a kit and clean out the top and side of the pump only. It had all kinds of gunk inside which was causing it to not start. I decided to keep the pump on the backhoe as to not disturb the timing. On the first day I removed the four bolts that connect the injector lines into the pump. Each one going to a piston head. I didn't notice at the time when I took the bolts out but one of them had a spring in the middle of the bolt. When I put the bolts back on I must have put the wrong bolt into the wrong line. I also didn't remember if the washers went on the top of injector line under or underneath the line. I started the fuel purging process by turning the ignition key on and using the manual lift pump on the other side of the engine. I couldn't get any fuel to bleed from the top bleeding screw. I checked the plunger and the veins as you said and all seemed fine. I then tightened each bolt on the injector lines and then continued using the manual lift pump to get the fuel into the injector pump. I followed the purging process from the manual. Finally after turning the engine over for a few times it started coming to life. It then stated but was very rough and I couldn't rev the engine at all. I then noticed one of the injector lines leaking badly and that's when I figured out that one of the bolts had a spring in the middle. I then swapped it out with one of the other injector lines and this time making sure I put a washer on the top and bottom of the injector lines. Made sure all bolts were nice and tight. I then started it up again and this time no leaks and the backhoe ran normal. I'm not positive if the bolt with the spring made the difference or the washers. It seemed I had air in the system and this may have caused the plunger to not work correctly. Still not sure if I put the washers on correctly but all seems to be working fine. Thanks to your outstanding video I had the confidence to open the injector pump and clean it up. Next time I just need to pay better attention when taking things off. This was by far the best video out on the web. Thanks so much Lance! I bet your video will come in handy for many visitors to come. Take care!

Thanks Again Lance, I like it better than Barry. Also, I was going to tell you, Nice Viking beard you're sporting. Have you ever had your DNA done? Reason I ask, under your bottom lip, full hair across, not like an Englishman with bare butt spots under the corners of your mouth...lol I just had mine done for $100 bucks, I 'm 60/40, 60% Viking & 40% Native American. I wish we lived closer, I'd really like to do some O.J.T. with you in the outback. I'm already a certified mechanic from the service, auto's & trucks, but wanted to rebuild diesels from the ground up. but No openings. Best to you in the outback.

I notice that there are some haters for this video??? What's wrong with you people??? Jealous because you don't know your left from your right??? Watched Bundy here and promptly tore down my injector pump and spent the $25.00 for the rebuild kit. No more leaks and no more fuel dumping into my crankcase! Problem solved, all thanks goes to Bundy!

Lance, Thank you for the informative video. I acquired a non-running Massey with the Perkins 3.152. I found the filter full of mud, which is the bacteria growth. After changing the filter and bleeding, I had no fuel to the cylinders. I cleaned the entire fuel system and then the inlet screen you show in this video. I installed an electric pump downstream of the lift pump and bled everything that was bleedable. After a few cranks, she lit off! I turned off the electric pump and it ran steadily on the mechanical lift pump. Now for the rest of the story... After 45 mins of idle time to come up to operating temperature, I drove it off the trailer. After checking out all the hydraulics and such, I slowly brought it up to max RPM. After about 5 seconds against the governor, it shut off just like you had pulled the fuel stop. Oddly, it was blowing quite a bit of black smoke when it got to the higher RPM range. I pulled the inlet again to check the bottom plunger and spring you mention, and all was well. I'm now at a no start condition with no atomized fuel exiting the exhaust. Aside from the shut-off and that inlet screen, what else could give me a no fuel, or no start condition? You just gained a subscriber as well! Jeff

I have a ford 2000 with those same symptoms . Thrown more money at it than I care to admit . Didn't know there was another screen in the pump. Going to try that this week. Hope that's my problem. I'm to the point of just doing a rebuild on the whole pump.

I did a better video on in the Massey Ferguson 135 6 speed series, video numbers 14 and 15 where I go in further to the rollers and main pump plunger etc. that may well be of help. Also look at my web site www.queenslandtractorspares.com.au on the technical tab there is a free pump manual download. This is a good breakdown of what is going on.

Dear Lance.I am repairing a Massey Ferguson 690 that suddenly lost power and ran unevenly with no engine power.There is blue and black exhaust emissions. She reached full revs eventually but is running very rough! I have changed the main fuel filter and there was fine sandy stuff in the sediment trap! I/we have completely drained the twin tanks and renewed the diesel fuel. It took 6 gallons minimum before the lift pump would deliver. I have cleaned the small tubular filter on the end of the CAV DPA Pump. Now then: because the filter which was completely "clogged" and did not come out reasonably I completely lost track of the re-assembly order!I would not have had a clue how it all went back together if it was not for your excellent and most helpful video! The Fibre Washer, Springs, Plungers etc have all got to go back in there somewhere and correctly! I am now going "Out There" to reassemble it all!The tappet clearances are all OK! I do hope it is not the head gasket "Gone"! She has history on that issue! That "Short Engine" has given me grief since we fitted it! When it is going it is fine but it has not done 20 hours as yet, trouble free! When it is going all seams well! Usually I/we do get good results with our efforts but I guess there is always one!I will let you know how I/we get on.All the best Lance. Rob Allen. Halmore in the Vale of Berkeley, Gloucestershire in the West of England.

@BundyBearsShed8 жыл бұрын
The pump will just go back onto the drive gear in the same spot as there is a dowel and you can not put it in the wrong place. Then just line up the timing mark on the flange and you are done.

Thank you so much for posting this video! I have a 1972 Massey Ferguson 135b with 3 cylinder Perkin's diesel and it stopped running while using it, of course, in a difficult to retrieve & trailer (or flatbed towing) load location. Even in the large city of Atlanta, Georgia, USA, there are very limited knowledgeable mechanics and the one's I know had several weeks of work backlog, after you get the tractor to them. By following the limited info in the operators manual, I had removed, flushed & cleaned the fuel tank with its small filter, replaced the fuel filter, blew compressed air through several fuel supply lines, and got to the point where the fuel injector pump would still not manually air bleed. Local sources wanted almost as much to rebuild the injector pump as a new one would cost ($480 to $600). With the help of your video, without removing the injector pump, I removed the end piece with the additional filter, and thoroughly cleaned gunk off of all the parts, still reusing the old filter, and reassembled. I was then able to successfully manually air bleed the system and get the tractor cranked and running again! Although, it probably should have a full injector pump cleaning and rebuild, at least now, the procedure may be done while in the garage! Thanks again, your video helped me avoid spending almost a $1,000 and perhaps a month's delay to have my tractor back! When more convenient, I will return to this video for help with the full rebuild.

Very useful video for this MF65 owner with a formerly leaking injector pump. I was so impressed I bought the Sparex kit from QLD Tractor Spares as recompense. It arrived this morning and, thanks to the tips and tricks mentioned throughout, I was able to have it sealed up tight in only an hour or so. Very grateful for the hint that the O -rings in the top cover could be replaced with the the pump remaining on the tractor!!! Started and stopped on the first attempt, did a happy dance and then it began to rain...all very good indeed!

Awesome. After being told for so long you have to spend $$$$$ to stop the leak your video is a god send. Cannot thank you enough.
