CARDS in Treno // ALEXANDER - Final Fantasy 9 - Part 18

Let's play Final Fantasy 9! (Final Fantasy IX/FF9) I will be providing commentary to my gameplay and reactions to all the best moments! Welcome to part 18!
Zidane goes to Treno to play in a card tournament and Kuja sets his sights on Alexandria. Dagger and Eiko summon Alexander to defend against Bahamut's onslaught, but will it be enough?
Final Fantasy 9 tells the story of Zidane, a catboy(!?), who is part of a group of thieves called Tantalus. In Alexandria, on the Continent of Mist, Zidane and Co. set out to capture Princess Garnet, only to find out that she WANTS to be kidnapped! The pair will travel with a group of friends such as Vivi, Steiner, Freya, Quina, Eiko and Amarant to areas such as Lindblum, Treno, Burmecia, Cleyra, Conde Petie and more! They will face many adversaries such as the Princess' own mother, Queen Brahne, and a mysterious man named Kuja!
I am playing this on PC through Steam. This game was published and developed by Squaresoft (now Square-Enix) in 2000 for the Playstation. The mod I am using for graphical upgrades is called Moguri Mod. You can find the website here: sites.google.com/view/moguri-...

That scene is why i like Alexander so much, he looked so impressive here. its also funny how you were not intrested in the card game at all and then the game basically didnt give you a choice xD

Alexander did look sooooo awesome! Can't believe it's from over 20 years ago! And yeah, I vowed to never play the card game but then I was forced. Well! Challenge accepted! I learned it well enough to win those matches at least. 😄

Now that Garland has made his entrance the plot thickens even more. The whole sequence with Kuja summoning Bahamut with Dagger and Eiko summoning Alexander to save Alexandria was intense. Garland intercepting the Invincible from Kuja and of course Zidane saving Dagger and Eiko was very emotional and touching.

Everything in that scene was amazing. I continue to be amazed that this originally came out on PS1. Those cutscenes!!!

Steiner can hit his enemies and drain their HP. But be careful. If the enemy is undead, Steiner will take damage. That rule also applies in Final 4 and I'm referring to the SNES version final fantasy 2.

I remember spending 1 hour reading how to play cards in this game. Never lost again. It became too easy.

Did you know that Garland was also in the very first Final fantasy released in 1987 on the NES? Also the victory music on the PS1 version is different. Dragon quest/warrior series has been around longer with fewer titles.

I hated Tetra Master in this game, I understood the rules but hate how even if you play perfectly there is still an element of randomness involved. Triple Triad all the way!

I never really got into Triple Triad either but for some reason I can remember the music to it pretty vividly hehe

I hated tetra master because the game never really explains it. And after I looked up how it works, I still didn't like it. Too much rng. I played VIII after IX so I was dreading the card game, but Triple Triad is easily the most fun FF minigame! I dunno why they insist on having terrible minigames like blitzball or chocobo search or tetra master, but triad was actually fun.

Alexander is a bad matchup for Bahamut. He's basically an eidolon living fortress who counterattacks after absorbing an attack. Too bad the invincible butted in.

@@bunnytails It caused me no end of frustration, thanks to all the random bullshit. If there was one thing Final Fantasy VIII did right, it was keeping the rules of the card game simple.
