One thing I did appreciate with this movie is that Christina’s character knows she can sing well. I hate when established artist/singers play a role where they don’t know they can sing or are too shy but we already know they can sing!

The lashes they hate from the "good girl" number are a vintage style from the 1930's called Beaded Lashes where women would purposely clump their lashes into small groups and place a bead of mascara at the end. There's a very famous photograph by Man Ray titled Tears that depicts this trend. While Christina's lashes are a very exaggerated version of beaded lashes, it still fits with the 30's-esque flair of the musical number.
@SundayMourningLove

Also a throwback to waxed lashes. Before mascara there was black wax applied to each lash and the ends often had a small “bead.”
@justinwilliams7290
@justinwilliams7290 Жыл бұрын
I don't think so.... I think they are like big featherlike lashes from circa 2008. Or I guess as you said exaggerated. They aren't beaded lashes which look incredibly different just big 2008 lashes. I dont think they thought about Man Ray or the 30s with this movie..
@lumi33tv

Yeah but it definitely still doesn't look good...makeup department, you could have done better with beaded lashes
@lumi33tv
@lumi33tv Жыл бұрын
@@justinwilliams7290 they obviously did think of the 30s here, they just used an overly dramatic, updated version of beaded lashes via using a strip lash and the look doesn't land

But, she got to learn for free and keep the tips. It got her to nail tryouts, she got her dream job, and a problem which flung her to the lead of the show gaining her fame and fortune. Not bad for a small temp position. Somehow, I doubt the same would've happened at her old place.

@Danielle Lou I was actually talking about the beginning of the movie at that restaurant/bar place that was slow. I doubt she was getting paid much, and she said she hadn't got paid for last month, which meant she hadn't got paid for the current month either when the movie started and I wouldn't be surprised if that was the first time she wasn't paid. After she moved to the "big city" I know she was getting paid once she started working and I agree, she was more than likely not paying anything staying with him.

I always thought Burlesque would have worked better as a concept/visual album as opposed to a full-fledged movie. Even if the plot is flimsy and cliché-ridden, it has a gorgeous aesthetic (Christina, Kristen Bell and Julianne Hough all look amazing) and fantastic songs. Christina was born to perform retro throwback music like this; look no further than the Back to Basics album.

Sadly, people forgot what a great actress Cher really was--she was such a big deal in 80's Hollywood! And she's really amazing here too, making the most, if not more, than what she's been given to work with. Cher's climactic solo is a true show stopper, but I wish the entire movie was so good! It's a corny, contrived mess full of stereotypes and fluff...

@@necromanticorn you know, in hindsight I don't think that Cher ever made any really BAD TERRIBLE movies for the most part. Burlesque was one of the worst in her lineup, but that says a lot because even it was extremely watchable despite its issues. I have wondered at times what her career may have looked like if she had not returned to music and continued her path as an actress instead. Between winning Oscar for Moonstruck and Mermaids she turned down some really successful movies like Thelma and Louise and many others. Too many years had passed until Mermaids came along and Cher had been disregarded as a real actress by many by then unfortunately which only led to other less successful films to follow. I wonder if she could have remained as relevant as she is today if she had just focused on acting alone...she is truly one of the best actresses of her time. I guess we'll never know...

Love this collab but i havent seen this said in the comments section! Burlesque is the "art of tease," and can be anything. Any song, any vibe, any anything. It can even be comedy based. I've worked cocktail waitressing in burlesque shows and even sung in burlesque shows. The critique of a song "matching the vintage vibe" of the venue is very off the mark, considering that what makes burlesque BEAUTIFUL is the variety!! Burlesque is meant to be all genres, ages, colors, and sizes and I believe thats where the real critique of this movie needs to come in to play. TOO MUCH of it is the same thing and same performer over and over and over.
