I always drop the front bucket down and float it across the ground, just angle the bucket so it doesn't disturb the soil. This seems to break the weeds off and compact them. After a few random passes it is ready to burn.

Always work against the wind and not with it with grass fires... Spot overs are a real thing even though you disced around it. Should always have a second man and some water with you just in case...

You gotta get yourself a tiger torch, downside is having to carry around a heavy tank to light fires but positive side is you’ll light anything you want on fire with that thing, burnt many acres and fence lines with a tiger torch

Does it really make sense to go to the effort to burn and bring these areas into production? In wet years it makes the existing adjacent farmland wetter and in dry years drier. Sloughs like these I think are more beneficial left untouched because they act as a water battery through the climate cycles. Just my thoughts.

Mike, I would highly suggest to roll the cattails in the spring and let them sit flat and dry out all summer then burn them in the fall. We have done that a few times. Just gotta go slow incase you hit a rock.

just had the privilege of driving the fendt 1060 on grain cart was really impressed over our john deere 4 wheel drive it had much more power to handle loaded cart with almost 90000 lbs and really like the tranny and the toggle switch for auger gate and raising and lowering the auger never liked john deere power shift

Yes and no. They live underground so burning doesn't get them. But when they come up the cover is gone and they are easy pickings for birds. This late in the year though most could be hibernating.

@@max-jc4wq It was before they got that land 300miles up north and before Ashton bought some up there by her family and the ground they bought recently, I think. He’s said the brothers and I assume the father each have there own ground and equipment, so it might be that Mike has 20-22 by himself, but that number be included in the family amount. Personally, the way it sounds like they do it , sounds like an accounting nightmare. But if it works for them , that’s great, and I certainly don’t know the details.

So if we run out of fertilizer or it’s to dry, we’ll just summerfallow all summer and seed more Rye in the fall like this year.

Dont you mean 18k/hectare instead of 180? We’re getting close to 180k/hectare in The Netherlands, but that is for some of the most productive (organic) ground you can find. Our average for arable land is somewhere around 80-90k/hectare.

Farmland here around in northwest Germany is incredible expanssiv: About 70.000 Canadian $ / acre! And for one year rent 700 Canadian $ / acre. Now you know why i start crying when mike say „buying is as expensive as 5 year rent“ We can rent 100 Years for the price of buying it😢

Land prices are insane. Here in South Australia land prices are now regularly making $10k aud an acre for reliable ground with a 16-17 inch average rainfall and even making $6 - 7k aud in slightly more marginal country.

The newer ones some guys mount them on a side by side and do AB lines ahead of time so they are able to auto track the edges of the fields.Or you can turn recording on and drive around an area to map the border and it will tell you how many acres it is.

If someone asks me how much i farm i say 8,000 acres, its not exactly correct but its ballpark. If mike thought it was none of your business im sure it wouldnt say "With their respective companies, together as a family, they farm around 40,000 acres of red and green lentils, chickpeas, hard red spring wheat, durum, canola, and barley." Directly on their website.

It varies quite a bit in Saskatchewan. As others have said $600 to 4500 k seems to be the range. Don't know that area specifically. 2k guess? Realtor said they have seen a 30% increase in prices this fall in some areas.

Realtor said least amount of land they have seen in awhile. Prices up 30% over historical in some areas as well. Some good years before this bad one hit. One bad year doesn't break most farms.
