@@42luke93my parents were both teachers. Their day never ended at 3. Teachers have to take their work home with them too. They had to write lesson plans in their free time and grade homework and tests every night. That’s one reason I’d never be a teacher. I’d much rather work till 5 and then just be done for the day. The only thing that would make it worth being a teacher is having summers off.

For the wall construction ideas, I would recommend watching the RV factory tours Josh the RV Nerd did, you can get inspiration from how the big manufacturers do it, TBH those videos taught me a lot about how an RV looks back end.

A school bus is not a very good choice. Low headroom, sloping walls rob a lot of space, and they just don't ever look as good as a proper bus conversion. You can get them very cheap though, so I guess it can be an ok choice if budget is your primary concern.

Congratulations on your retirement from teaching. Many years ago I went to Teacher's College. When I did my practicum I realized that I just wasn't up to the task of looking after the needs of students, so I went into high-tech. Teaching is an exhausting and very difficult profession. Also, I understand that in the US, the pay is not that great.

Me to and also the experience of friends. Your tech career refutes the old saw "those rhat can't do teach". Teaching is a career that is underappreciated and underpaid by those who haven't experienced the skill, education and devotion that those who can do it have.

completely correct. teaching is not easy, no matter the age group or subject. and the pay in the US is abysmal. teachers are one of those professions that should be considered "CEO" level pay, because they literally are molding the future of the country.

Pay varies considerably. In CT, the mean teacher pay is 87 grand/year. That means 50% make MORE, and 50%make less. In other parts of the country the mean pay might be half that. One of the thiings many people in other countries don't understand about the US is we're extremely diverse. There's no "school system" in the US, there's about 14,000 of them. So it's hard to make statements about the whole country, and sometimes even one state. But 87 grand is pretty good, especially considering you get summers off.

For your walls, particularly around the bathroom and kitchen, you might look at FRP board. Sold in 8x10 sheets just like plywood, but it's fiberglass reinforced plastic. Most home improvement stores will have a few sheets, minimum. It's what's used in commercial restrooms - you're usually required to use a waterproof material below about shoulder height for those. Comes in smooth and that weird bubbly texture. As far as attaching it, you basically just glue it down. Glue it to a sheet of plywood to make a wall panel. The bus walls themselves (including the part where the carpet used to be glued) are probably actually fiberglass reinforced plastic to start with.

Mrs. Wizard, if you need to make thin lightweight rigid wall panels and partitions, look into laminating your own panels with a foam core. You can buy foam insulation panels 4'x8' in a variety of thicknesses 1/2" to 2" from a home center, and then laminate 1/8" wood paneling or Masonite paneling to the outside. It makes a very stiff construction once the glue sets up. Look for construction adhesive that is rated for foam (the wrong kind will dissolve foam) to glue everything together. You basically lay up a sandwich for each panel, stack them, and then put some weight on the stack for a few days while the adhesive cures. To install/attach the panels in to the bus, plan ahead and glue wood blocks inside the panels, on the edges of the foam core or in the middle -- wherever you would need to screw into the panels or run a bolt through.

For walls, laminate thin foam board between thin plywood with glue then cut any holes you may need. adjust the foam and plywood thickness to whatever the thickness of your wall will be. Very strong technic if well glued. Put wood/plywood backers where it needs to have hinges/etc. screwed to it.

You could always use a piece of plywood and either paint it or prime it and cover with wall paper. Also, since you can't mount along the window, you could always mount the bottom and top. Adding a corner to attach to a doorway or something would give more strength.

Congrats to Mrs. W on her retirement (I retired 9 months ago, still getting used to it). Fortunately, my wife (school Librarian) still loves working with the kids, so it will be a while yet for her. I saw a motor-coach converted to an RV near her late parent's house, and the Destination display now says "Travel Bug". I hope you can get a cute name for your bus from the likely thousands of viewer suggestions (& I hope that the short wheelbase doesn't drive you crazy with front-to-rear bobbing on the freeway). Interior walls and structures can be made with 1/2" plywood and 1" x 2" furring strips with wood glue & screws for strength, some may even be 1/4" plywood if full rigidity and strength is not needed. I would make some padded bolsters to attach to the outside walls by the beds, for comfort and insulation. Opaque window tint for unneeded windows so you don't lose space by boarding them over (unless you want to put insulation against the glass).

Hi Mrs Wizard. I am a bus driver, so I know what your looking into. What walls you put in will need to be light, thin and flexible! You will need to place rubber pads in-between supports you screw into the walls or floor. Or you will find with the movement of the busses body, your walls will start to crack. Keep your materials light like fiberglass and plastic as these will allow some flex in them as well. I hope this helps you... I enjoy watching your bus project.

Today I learned Mrs Wizard was a teacher. That makes sense. Thumbs up. Mrs Wiz - Have you thought about Aluminium T-Slot or V-Slot profile? It's a handy construction material, the special mounting hardware for it (slot nuts) make it extremely versatile. You can also mount panels into the grooves created when You make a frame out of it. I don't have many suggestions for panel material that would look good, but Aluminium Composite Material (ACM) panelling is easy to cut down by the score and snap method, inexpensive, thin, insulating, and light.

Mr. & Mrs. Wizard, have enjoyed your youtube's for a while. Saw Mrs. Wizards request for wall materials. Congrats, by the way on your retirement from teaching. I've been working on converting a Sprinter van to a camper and have used Hardboard thrifty panels (from Home Depot) with positive results. The panels are rigid and easy to work with. In combination with [pink] insulation and some [gorilla] glue. They make for solid light separator walls (non-load bearing). I've used this combo to make [floor] cabinets. as well, and will be adding wooden framing to make overhead cabinets. There are PVC corner and panel connector pieces available to extend wall sections and cover edges. It's worked well for me. Give the materials a look for your bus/RV build out efforts. Keep up the good work on the bus and your videos...

For the walls I'd either use marine ply (with or without decorative coating) or MDF (medium density fibreboard). The advantage of MDF is that it cuts like wood but is grainless, so is equally strong in all direction - just DON'T breathe the dust when sawing it - toxic and possibly carcinogenic. Either way, happy building Mrs Wizard! :)
