I admit we don't teach financial education in school. Even simple stuff like balancing a checkbook account and the credit trap that is a necessary evil. I had a high school teacher who one day decided to scrap his regular lesson plan and taught us how to balance checking, the importance of a serious emergency fund (I call the "Oh shit fund," because something happens and you need that reserve), and that minimum wage jobs are too little to survive and why educating yourself at university or in a trade is critical to have skills to be marketable in job market that will change and to learn to adapt. That was in 1988 and damn that one day I learned simple, yet critical basic financial advice I never learned at home. I do work with investing, but I need to take a more proactive role. I have a 403B plan and need to go higher risk at this point. Market is volatile, but I can buy lower now. I'm willing to do cryptocurrency . I want real tangible assets that back up any stocks, other equities, and other forms of investments from plan. I wish the last five years I had been more aggressive in new allocations, but the average American doesn't even begin investing till 40s. I started at 33 when I got a stable job. I was reared to accept social security may not be there for my generation or maybe a lot less it's value. You are so right sir. We need people to really plan their Financials. My investment strategy previously encompassed a three-fund portfolio with an allocation of 33% each in the S&P, Total Stock, and international indices. Recently, I felt compelled to pivot entirely towards growth-oriented assets, thus transitioning to a 100% stocks allocation. However, I've begun to question the logic behind simultaneously holding both the S&P 500 and Total Stock Market, considering potential redundancy. Regrettably, my investments have been in a downturn for the past month, significantly impacting my emotional well-being as I toil diligently to earn my income. This turbulence in the market has left me in a state of nervous despair. Uncertain whether to liquidate my entire portfolio or adopt a more passive stance by waiting, the sight of my investment dwindling away adds to my distress.

Numerous intriguing stocks across diverse industries warrant consideration in your investment portfolio. It's crucial to recognize that acting upon every forecast isn't necessary. Therefore, I recommend engaging a financial advisor who can provide guidance on optimal timings for purchasing and selling the shares or ETFs aligning with your investment objectives.

Brian, I watch a lot of videos on investing. This was easily the most comprehensive one that considered a variety of important factors for considering and selecting ETFs, and it didn't take an hour to do so. In particular, this is the best presentation of the trade-off between risk and return. - - - It is my opinion that many (most?) investors jump onto the SCHD, VOO, or VGT band wagon because of the returns and don't even know that they will, at some time, endure a drawdown of 15%-35% in the value of their portfolio. I subscribed. Who are you? What is your investing background, education, experience? Who do you work for?

Excellent structure and information in this video Brian, thank you, lots to think about! SCHD's high dividends and consistent returns seem to be a pretty good bet if I'm looking for a safe withdrawal rate of 3.5-4% and to match inflation (I'm looking for a "safer" 6% return basically). VGT's returns are appealing though! Since SCHD and VGT have so little overlap, could they be a good diversification play to cover US large cap vs buying say VTI or VOO?

What is your thought on allocating a 50/50 split between SCHD and VGT? Could this approach broaden your overall sector diversity considering they only have a 1% overlap of securities? While also at the same time increasing your upside during bull markets, and lowering your risk while in bear markets? With this strategy is it possible to beat VOO and the overall market on a consistent basis?
@BusinessWithBrian9 ай бұрын
That is a fantastic question. I personally have about 50% of my portfolio in stocks and the rest in funds including what I'll call "other". But with your specific question if you were to just invest in those two, models for historical performance do show it outperforming VOO. But please know since I'm not a licensed financial advisor, I cannot provide advice. I can merely state the models that I've looked at and the results they've shown for historical performances. And given your knowledge and the way you asked the question, I believe you assume the past performance is not a guarantee for future performances. Once again, that is a fantastic question.

I think an interesting test to perform would be to combine the higher dividend payout holding (SCHD) with the higher growth holding (VGT), and use the dividend from the high dividend to buy more of the higher growth holding to compare VGT's performance with the added boost from the high dividend holding over time.

The fact SCHD is even being compared to growth index's is what I love about it. It pays out dividends (which are paid by established low volatility stocks) AND has comparable returns.

@elizabethbednar633810 ай бұрын
If you add the dividend payment to schd wouldn’t it beat voo in returns?
@BusinessWithBrian10 ай бұрын
@@elizabethbednar6338 Sadly, no it will not beat VOO. I cover that in the video, where I explicitly state that the dividends are reinvested to get the total return, and all expenses have been taken out. It truly comes down to looking at the total return to know how a stock or ETF compare to one another. If a person were to pocket the dividends and not reinvest them, then the total return would be substantially lower. There are a lot of people that have false hope that the dividend can be stacked on top of the total return, giving it an amazing return. But that would be a false narrative. It's (dividend) already been taken into account in the total return.

Let's not forget that if you had invested in growth compared to dividend stocks if you retired or needed the funds and the economy was down then you would have lost a ton more and had to sell at a worse time. Growth is OK if you have a long time horizon for needing the funds. Had you say invested in VGT before 2007 and needed to retire in 20008 -2009 you would have taken a big loss.
@BusinessWithBrian10 ай бұрын

But, SCHD is a dividend ETF, with about 100 companies. Not an S&P 500 ETF. VOO has just over 500 companies, and VGT is tech-centered with just over 300 companies. And tech is doing well regardless. IYW (iShares US Tech) outperforms VGT with only 139 tech companies. So, if we're trying to reach max gains, I'd say none of the above (SCHD, VOO, or VGT).
