I got some similar gradients too from my Oiii channel that went away when I enabled per channel flat frame scaling in WBPP. The R vs G+B channels are so radically different they don’t really work with one flat scaling number.

I've been waiting for a review of this filter very interesting results Cuiv as I'm looking for a narrower dual band filter for the RASA, the halos are putting me off a bit so for now I'll be sticking with the NBZ especially after seeing Luke & Bills comment below.

No service that I know of... Some people have started building their own spectrometers for cheap to test filters...

I’m a complete noob and waiting on my dwarf2. I’m in the suburbs with street lights everywhere. Would a filter like this be useful for it? I hope this question even makes sense 😆

The non-highspeed (e.g. standard) version would be a good tool, but you need to adapt a 2 inch filter to the 1.25 inch holder!

Should work with Canon cameras, but I'd recommend having the camera astromoded - it will work to get the nebular details of galaxies as well, but you then may want to get some broadband data too

Hi Cuiv, you're probably familiar with the following but halos are quite complex issues and can be down to a bunch of reasons including the AR coating on camera windows, there's a couple of references worth reading up on, the Baader piece 'Halos viewed without prejudice' and Jim Thompsons 'understanding filter induced halos'

I managed to score one of these filters when they launched. I highly recommend it! My use case; it was paired with a RASA36 and QHY268C. Results with the filter have been excellent!

I have a discussion with a dealer about difference between the high-speed version and regular version (not just ANTLIA, but also IDAS-NBZ) - my issue is that I have setups at F3 or faster, and regular setup at F5 or above. It will make no sense for me to buy two versions of them, so I was advised to use the regular one, because the light cone that got through won't produce the effect that is really significant.

The IDAS NBZ has wide bandpasses so you right, UHS vs normal has almost zero impact. I personally would go (and have gone) with the normal version because it can be used so successfully at any speed. For tighter bandpasses, 7nm and tighter, the placement of the bandpass compared to the signal wavelength becomes critical, and varies from filter to filter of the same model! For something that's 5nm like the Antlia it becomes even more important. Using the standard ALPT on Hyperstar can be quite bad (I tested it) because then the outside of the aperture (which represents a large percentage of the total light gathering area) gathers only light pollution and no signal. It actually becomes better to mask the outside of the aperture a bit in terms of SNR!

Very thorough review Quiv as always . I've been using an Alp-T filter for a while now but it produces halos, not so bad as the L-extreme but they are still there. So a few months ago I switched to an Optolong L-Ultimate 3Nm filter and must say that I was blown away of the better details, more contrast, .... and also almost no halos at all. But that 3Nm is very narrow, so star colors are completely gone. So have to shoot extra luminance for the stars.

Hey Cuiv, thanks for this review. I know you said it should provide good results at just about any focal ratio. Do you think f/1.4 would be pushing it too far? I'm interested in getting this for my Sigma Art 105.

Ça dépend de tes préférences et de ta situation. Pour moi à Tokyo, dorénavant je vais utiliser le Antlia, simplement parce que le SNR est vraiment bien. Et les halos ne me dérangent pas plus que ça! Si les halos dérangent, alors une valeur sûre est le IDAS NBZ (UHS ou pas, les deux fonctionneront bien)

@@CuivTheLazyGeek i can't wait to see it. I follow you closely. I'm using NINA, the Starizona Nexus, Pixinsight and now the Antlia highspeed dual band with my GSO 6 " imaging Newtonian. I'm thinking of making the cardboard cutout for the back of the Newtonian like you did with yours. I've only been doing astrophotography for about a year-and-a-half now and you've helped me tremendously!

Great video! Fix that collimation 😁Because of the steep angle of incidence, this can cause internal reflections and other odd issues of the optics are not aligned. Also I noticed that Antlia and possibly other Chinese designed filters (Optolong?) only have the AR coating on the side facing the camera (the gold color). So there is a possibility you are seeing reflections off of the back of the corrector plate. Clear Skies!

Interesting, that Cuiv is also seeing some reflections or artifacts. I also noticed a strange (although different) artifact on my f5 Newtonian when doing a 15min exposure on the horsehead. So I went on the facebook page, where Antlia had an older picture on how to test with a pen, which side of the filter had the AR coating. The response I got was somewhat interesting: "In fact, Antlia has optimized the new coating process. The front and back sides have no effect on the transmittance and halo. If there is halo, it will definitely have it on either side. ALP-T dual 5nm #goldenfilter achieves a balance between improving halo and SNR." Given though, this reply is not talking about reflections, but I did not follow up on this, since the weather did not allow me to get another shot at the Horsehead for further testing...

@@grrrsoft Yeah I have to some more testing myself. I was too busy chasing a comet 🙂 I live in a Bortle 9 area so my exposures are really short especially using a RASA, like no more than 30 seconds even in narrow band. So I have not tried anything longer than that and have not seen halos nor reflections. I did see odd reflections on other filters but that was before I fixed my tilt issue. F2 can be a pain sometimes, like a fast car, needs a lot of maintenance!

Thanks for another great video @Cuiv ! I suppose you wouldn't have the same bandwidth shift issue with the Samyang 135 at f/2 as you don't have an obstruction in the middle? These specialised filters seem really to be designed for the RASAs and Hyperstars or am I wrong?

You're not entirely right nor wrong! The Samyang will still suffer if you use a normal very narrow NB filter: the outer edge of the lens (e.g. the most surface!) Will end up rejecting the target bandpass but accepting light pollution! Better to simply close the aperture!

Besides collimation maybe the hyperstar experiencing a bit of pinching as well? Could try wrapping a small dew heater around it if thats the case

how does this filter compare to the L-Ultimate which is cheaper and is 3nm?

The L-Ultimate won't work well at all on a F2 scope! Otherwise, an L-Ultimate that performs up to spec (not a given) should beat a standard ALP-T very handily at F4 or slower

Looks like a winner. The ball is now in Optolong's court to come out with a highspeed L-Ultimate. However 3nm is so narrow that they'd have to do an f3 and and f2 version like Baader.

Yep, and I like to think my videos had a hand in making Baader provide those F2 and F3 specific filters :) An alternative would be another 5nm bandpass filter with higher transmission and no halos!

@@CuivTheLazyGeek I really do think you had some influence on getting Baader to come out of the f3 filters. And I'm very thankful because I own them and they blow my old 7nm filters out of the water. Previously people shooting with f3 systems had 3 choices. Shoot with 7nm filters which kind of defeats the purpose of owning a fast scope since you are sacrificing the better SNR of more narrowband filters. Use 3nm filter anyways and potentially have even worse SNR than with 7nm. Or order custom shifted 3nm filters for Chroma (I didn't even bother asking how much they cost). I hope more companies follow suit. Currently there's no good off-the-shelf option for OSC shooters who want an ultra narrowband filter. But maybe this use case is too niche for companies to invest the effort.

donuts are from dust no? so your flat frame arn't being processed correctly or the image chain changed post imaging and it is removing the dust from the image even though it wasn't there at the time of imaging?

I don't think it's dust, I've taken images with the ALP-T right before and right after taking images of the Horsehead, and those images showed no donuts at all, even after stacking... I've also double checked the flat frames, no sign of donuts there...

F3.3 will have some steep angles, but you're mostly in the clear, especially at bandpasses of 5nm FWHM or more

@@CuivTheLazyGeek Nice! I have 5nm Astrodon filters. I just don’t want to change them and start picking unpredictable, like “black cats in bag” filters, from some companies. Debates about quality of products from Antilas, Askars, Optolongs, ioptrons, etc will go forever. Their quality is just unpredictable. How they told in a movie “don’t understand it, rid of it”.
