Great video. Just got my first bike at 57. I bought a 2013 Honda Shadow VT750 RS. Just listening to your story reminds me of how far I have come in less than 3 months. I traveled 4 hrs one way to pick up the bike at a bike shop. I had them load it on the back of my Tacoma and brought it back home. It stayed on the truck for 2 days. My new neighbor helped me get it off the truck in a ditch nearby. I could barely get it to my driveway. My neighbor just laughed at me because I looked like a fish out of water on that thing. But, like you, I practiced in my driveway with the controls and eventually got out on my dead end street and went through a few gears. About a week later I got to the top of the road and turned on the main road without even planning to do so. After 100 yards I was addicted. I hit the back roads and was afraid of turning, starting and stopping. I finally found a good church parking lot and started practicing the things youtubers had prescribed. I was shocked how fast I learned. I had gotten my permit with just a written test, but had made an appt. to take my skills test 2 months out at the DMV. The man there told me to practice. They give the test right behind the DMV so I would go up there after hours and practice the skills. There were no cones, but they had it marked on the pavement where the cones went. When I went in for my endorsement I whizzed right through it. In NC it's not that hard anyway. I have put over 2000 miles on that bike already in under 3 months. I live in the County so I have plenty of roads to ride on. I venture out further and further it seems now and love to experience a road on my bike that I have never took it on. It's still 100% stock and only had 1400 miles when I bought it. It's basically new. They are easy to maintain and I'm learning how to do the maintenance when needed. Thanks for your video. Your honesty and humility drew me right in and I kept saying how our experiences were so similar. The difference being I set out to get a Honda because my Harley friend told me that's what I needed and all I would need to do is change the oil once in a while. LOL. Now, I'm thinking I need to slow down because I don't want to run up the miles on it in the first year. The weather is turning perfect right now and I can't help myself. Off for another ride......

Awesome back story! I love comments like this! So much detail and it helps us get to know you! Yes, those little steps like you did/are doing set the foundation for success in riding. Sounds like you are doing well! Your friend is also correct about a Honda. That’s about all they need for maintenance (for the most part) is an oil change. We are definitely coming into some great riding weather as far as temps and the change of the season goes! Thanks for watching, and I am sure we will catch you on another video soon! Ride safe!

It would be great if more people, especially young people would put their ego's in their pockets. You did correct in the way you starting riding. Greetings friend from Costa Rica, yesterday I bought my Honda Shadow 2005 30,000 miles driven. At first I wanted an HD 883, but 3 facts led me to decide on the Honda Shadow Aero. First, the HD concessionaire closed its representation in Costa Rica; second, the government tightened the annual technical review and it is difficult for them to approve HD; third, and I know it's silly to say it, but I did my homework and decided on Honda. Your videos are full of encouragement, knowledge you are a great young man, I really appreciate the opportunity to be part of your channel. Thanks, I'll send you a video of the Shadow soon. Sorry for my poor English, about 30 years ago I studied in California and today I speak little with my great friends in the USA.

@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 2 жыл бұрын
All of them. 😂 The 750s are pretty versatile for new and old riders. It is something you may be happy with long term, and it can teach the ropes. A 1300 is going to be a little heavier and have more power, and not something I would start with. The newer Phantoms are nice as well. Then you get into fuel injection versus the carburetor. It’s just whatever your preference is for over all looks. My Shadow has been a great bike for myself to learn on, and my wife. Maybe one day my daughter will learn on it as well. Hope that helps some!

You are right friend, sometimes we idealize a brand, then we realize that there is a wide range of options out there. Why does it always have to be an HD? They recommend it, myth, aesthetics, sound, etc ... To tell the truth, everyone lives and rides the motorcycle that gives us freedom and good driving. I gotta laugh a bit. I spent most of my adolescent years in Aberdeen, so when I stumbled across your video and hearing your accent I knew you were from Sodak. After buying a shadow and only owning Harleys all my riding life. I love the Honda and feel kinda guilty about it.... it needed work and I fixed it up and got it ripping and it's become more of a passion to ride it. I stilllove my ultra for touring, but it's nice riding a zippy bike that I can get around on easily and quickly that gets good mileage. Maintenance is cheaper and quicker and I have had no issue getting parts... I even found an OEM fuel pump for it that I replaced since it was gummed up. I actually rode the sportsters, 883 and 1200 and think the shadow is more comfortable on bad roads. Mine came with a mustang seat and that was helpful too as it adds a ton of comfort. Of you get a tall memphis shades windshield and bags this things a tourer, knobbies and you got an adv.... as versatile as the harley without the sound, bar and shield....

Everything you said in this video describes ME ....I'm struggling right now with a decision about my first motorcycle I'm a big HD fan but I'm afraid to drop it or whatever so I'm taking into consideration to get a honda shadow or Suzuki boulevard c50, or Suzuki intruder whatever just a cheap Japanese cruiser to learn how to ride ( I did my MSF course 2 years ago ) my friend just bought his first motorcycle which is 2005 Softail. He took it to a huge high school parking lot and I followed him in my car and he gave me his bike to ride on that parking lot I said to him NO WAY this thing weight 710 lbs and has 1500cc displacement you want me to drop him ? he said don't worry you gonna be fine just take it and play with it a little so I did. Man that was the best motorcycle day in my life and since then ( it was about a month ago ) I can't sleep I still hear that beautiful engine and pipes in my head. Now winter is coming but next year I have to get something I just have to. ( you live in a beautiful quiet area perfect for motorcycle riding and I live in an urban area there are no farms around me its a city after city with heavy traffic I don't even have a place to learn and practice that also scares me I'm looking at google earth just to find a good area so I can ride and practice I would have to go 20 miles thru the city and heavy traffic just to get to the place where we have some farms so this area where I live is also very depressing when I think about my motorcycle.)

Where are you from? Best thing is just find an empty lot like your buddy did and practice as much as you can. Sometimes just in the driveway works for finding the friction zone and feeling the weight of the bike. Just sit on a bunch of them and find what fits you the best and what you are most comfortable with for engine size. Some bikes are more forgiving than others. The bikes you mentioned should be pretty good for forgiveness for a new rider. Keep an eye open over winter. You might pick up a good deal. Thanks for watching and taking the time to comment! Great video, I stumbled upon your channel because I was looking for reviews or comparisons between a Honda shadow and a sportster 883. I still consider myself a newbie although I have been practicing on and off for over a year now. I consider this year to be my first real riding season. I started off on a 250 Honda rebel, sold that, I got cocky and bought a sportster 883 super low. Thought it was comfortable for me and quickly realized after I purchased it and rode around town that it was just too clunky and top-heavy. I’m 411 on a good day and even though I did have it lowered it just wasn’t working out for me. So I really wasn’t riding it. I bought another Honda rebel 250 and started riding that and feel that I’ve come along way in my skill level. I just recently sold the Harley and started looking into the Honda Shadow‘s, Phantom, Aero , and the Spirit. This time I’m taking my time, not feeling cocky and hoping to make the right decision when choosing my next upgraded bike but the Honda Shadow‘s are definitely at the top of my list. All the controls seem to be the same from one Honda to another and that that’s a good thing.

Thank you. It’s good that you realized everything you mentioned and decided to make a change to be safer. The Honda’s seem to have pretty simple controls and the ones you mentioned. Plus the low seat height will hopefully help you. Good luck on finding the right fit! Keep us posted what you go with. Thanks for commenting and finding the channel! ✌🏼

nice video. you have described my experience almost perzaktly as my own. looked at the 883, my buddies laffed at me for looking at a "Skirtster" so i looked at the street bob ect... i finaly started looking at the style of bike i love, a stripped, low, mild ape single seat Bobber... i googled Cool Bobber, Blue Collar Bobbers came up, and walla!!! i found a Honda Shadow vlx600, plenty fast for me and im part by part bulding a sweet lil bobber in memory of my Brother Blair, going to call it Broseff. my first bike was a stolen recovery (and pretty messed up) 87 V-max dumb fast near died on it in 1989, totaled, scared the pants off me and i have not ridden since up until this spring '21 when my bro passed felt the need to get out in the wind. feels like FREEDOM! i ride when i miss the ones who are past, and they ride with me.

Thank you for watching and leaving this comment! It is great to hear your story of why you began riding again! You are riding with a great purpose and I admire that! Never ride what others feel you should ride. Ride what you want and what fits your style the best. It sounds like you have done that and I bet you have an amazing looking bike by how you describe it. I have often considered doing a similar build to our Honda, but I feel it is too nice to chop up so to say. One day, I want to find a beat up one, and build it out how I want and do the work myself. Thanks again for being here! Ride safe and give that throttle a twist for your bro. 😊

It’s difficult for Harley boys to understand Japanese bike manufacturers because Yamaha, Suzuki and Honda don’t breakdown if you so much as look at them wrong….. there’s also a truth that Harley boys don’t like to hear and that is Japanese bikes, especially Honda, have more parts actually made in the USA than Harley does. Harley Davidson is almost entirely manufactured outside the USA. Which is just hilarious! The “mOsT aMeRiCaN mOtOrCyClE” is made of foreign parts! I don’t know much about Indian motorcycles or where those are actually made. But since they’re made by Polaris now, I feel like the bike looks better than it actually performs. Do I like the look of Harley bikes? Yes! I like the 883, the Softail and the Lowrider S. They look great but they just aren’t reliable and way too expensive. I will always make fun of Harley guys because 9 of 10 Harley guys are entirely close minded to everyone who rides anything besides a Harley, they literally treat you like a second class rider. Not all of them, like this guy in the video is great. But most Harley boys are just absolutely insufferable.

You broke this down very well. I grew up always wanting a Harley-Davidson, but when the time came to buy, I bought this Honda Shadow to learn on. Three months later, I bought a Road King and then eventually old that and bought a newer one. I alternate riding both bikes when my wife, who just began riding as you may have seen, isn’t riding. Thank you for recognizing how open minded I am when it comes to the motorcycle world. I don’t care what people are riding, as long as they are on two wheels or three wheels, they earn my respect. I wave to them all on the road.

I don't currently own my own motorcycle, but in the MSF class I took last year I rode a Rebel 300, which was the first bike I've ever ridden. Great fun, felt nice, but my legs were absolutely cramped to hell and back (6' on a good day :^)) and hurt A LOT. Either I was simply using leg muscles I've never really used, I need to find a taller bike, or need forward controls. I'm in a similar boat you were as I initially wanted an 883, but now I'm leaning towards a Shadow Phantom. A bit cheaper, forward controls, still looks and sounds great, and a bit of nostalgia as my father rode a Shadow back in the 80s before I was born.

Yeah, it definitely sounds like you need a bike you can stretch out on. I am 6’2” and I am cramped up on my Shadow Spirit. I would go to some dealerships and just sit on some bikes. My buddy decided to buy a Road King and had plans to sell his Shadow. Well I bugged him until he would sell m the bike. I think he was worried that our friendship would be compromised if something went wrong with the bike (would never happen). Anyway, I've ridden the shit out of my Shadow. It is a fun bike. It has straight pipes an aftermarket air cleaner and the carbs have been re jetted. Those mods helped immensely with performance.

I do ride it locally too, just because it's cool as hell & I got it, but I love the fuel mileage & dependability of my Honda... I've had it 9 years next month & almost 40K miles & still runs like it did when I first got it...& still occasionally tour on it just because I can... but usually only if the Road King is ailing these days... You mention the bike is a little small for you. How tall are you? I ride a 2020 V-Strom650 XTA and love it except it is a little tall for me at 5'9" and too tall for my 5 foot girlfriend to enjoy riding. I saw an older Shadow yesterday for sale and I am seriously thinking about buying a 2022 or newer Shadow as a second bike. Nice video!

I am almost 6’3” and my wife is 5’10”, and this bike we can both easily flat foot with our knees bent. If o remember correctly, seat height is around 26”, so it’s relatively low. I would throw your leg over that Shadow and see how it feels. Your girlfriend may have to do the one foot down type thing, or tip toes. I hope that gives you a little bit more info to go on. Thanks for watching!

I’m 6’2” and comfortably ride a Shadow VLX 600. But, I started on a Yamaha V Star 250 in 2021, and rode that bike all over the country, almost 18,000 miles that first summer. So, it may be just what you get use to. I Purchased the Honda VLX 600 in December of 2021. I rode it to California and down into Baja Mexico this last spring. This motorcycle stuff is addictive!!

I always rode Japanese bikes. Test rode a HD 1200 spotter 20 years ago and was not expressed with it. I did technically had an American motorcycle with my 1999 Honda Ace Shadow tour. It was made in Ohio. Loved that bike but my wife ran into a parked car and at 10 mph and was considered totaled. Haven’t rode a motorcycle since 2007 but still have my endorsement that I had since 1974 and getting the itch to get another one now that I am retired.

Im curious.. when you ride with all that gear do you feel like u are safer and that you can take more, risk? I grew up riding horses and bicycles without protection. Now i ride without and helmet and shorts , if the weather is hot. Be brave, be free! Enjoy the ride!!!!
@TWOWHEELD
@TWOWHEELD 11 ай бұрын
I rarely ride without a helmet. I don’t wear a helmet to be able to take more risk. I wear it in the event something goes south, and my head is skipping across the ground, I have a face left afterwards. I also wear a helmet because I prefer to ride without a windshield. So it helps keep the bugs and rocks from hitting me in the face. I also wear a helmet so I can record these videos. I have a microphone in my helmet and camera attached. I also prefer to wear gloves when riding. Not only will that be the first thing you put down to catch yourself, they also help protect against rocks and bugs. I typically only wear jeans and a lot of times street shoes for the rest of gear. Unless it is cold like now. Some mornings when I am leaving the house, it is 30-35 degrees. I will wear my leather jacket, and soon leather chaps to keep warm. A helmet comes in handy here as well. I also grew up riding bicycle without a helmet or any protection. I survived a number of injuries from broken bones to stitches due to spending a lot of time on two wheels when I was a kid. I always believe in ride your own ride. Hopefully that answered your question? Thanks for watching and commenting.

It depends on the year. All the repairs and maintenance will kind of depend on the year no matter the make and model. We have the Honda and two Harley’s in the garage. They are all pretty solid motorcycles. The Shadow is a 2007, the Harley’s are 2018 and 2019’s. Change the oil and do the needed maintenance, and they will all run for a long time. I know shop labor at a Harley dealer will cost you more than taking the Honda to the Honda dealer, though. Doing what you can on your own will help keep those costs down. Honda does make solid motorcycles. Pretty much keep oil in them and they just keep running! Thanks for watching and commenting.

I never stated it to be. I wouldn’t recommend the 1100 to a beginner. Some beginners would be just fine on it, I know I personally would have been. Most should start out on something smaller. There are a lot of variables that go into to it. Height, weight, mental acuity, coordination and so on. That will all determine where you can begin. My Shadow is specifically a shaft driven 745cc bike. It’s pretty forgiving, and pretty doggish. Hope that helps clear that up a little. I also have a 2019 Road King with a 114 in it and my wife rides a 2018 Heritage 114. My Shadow can go any place our Harley’s can go, but I would never try to take it on more than 100 Mike trip do to comfort. A bigger frame bike is just so much better for me. I say, ride what you wanna ride. I love them all.
