Getting past the fear of traffic when riding motorcycle. This sounds like something that may be easy to overcome, but is it? This may be one of the biggest obstacles a new motorcycle rider may encounter. This video idea comes from a subscriber that asked the question of how to get past the fear of riding with cars around you. Traffic may vary a lot depending on the area you live in. For us, fortunately, traffic isn't terrible. In today's beginner motorcycle rider tips video, I will share my take on how to get past the fear of traffic. You get used to it by doing it. Ride your ride. A little faster than the flow of traffic makes it easier but looking and having an escape plan at all times. After time you will start doing it without thinking about it. That’s the goal.

This is a great question to answer. When I ride I am invisible AND drivers are distracted and blind. So, I use a great deal of caution. My best defense is to make sure I am visible. A bright LED headlight makes a difference but I don't solely rely on it. Choosing the best lane position to be seen is key.

Thanks for sharing! I particularly like your weave idea to cause a "flash" of your headlight; I'm going to have to add that to my toolbox while on the road. I don't think I ever "get used" to traffic, but rather, have gotten better at managing the mindset of being aware of what is around me. One thing that helps is always figuring people are going to do the ridiculous thing and not give a rip about you, and giving as much space as possible to allow for those things. Stay safe!

In my experience. People hug the left most of the time. You get better visibility and escape route from position one of the right lane or position 2 of a single lane. Better to dump into grass than into an oncoming vehicle.

I observed this just a bit ago. I was driving our big box truck and had a motorcycle passing cars behind us and caught up to me. I actually moved over the the right a little bit to allow him a little more room to see around me so he could pass. When you know how this works on two wheels, you try to help a rider on the streets. It sure if he noticed or appreciated it, but I know what I did for him to keep him safer.

Always be ready to brake and/or swerve People coming from the side or turning left from the other direction who see you at the last moment after pulling out will sometimes freak out and stop right in front of you.

Thanks! My dad watched this video and he kind of laughed. He told me that the subscriber that asked the question was probably talking about heavy traffic, bumper to bumper big city type traffic. I forget how fortunate we are in most of SD! 😆 I wish they would teach motorcycle classes in automobile classes to get your license or something. It would help everyone learn things from our perspective!

Great information. I'm happy to say I do try and do all that you talk about. I started riding around the time of Covid. So, I took the opportunity of very light traffic to practice my traffic riding and my interstate riding. as things started getting back to normal, I was not as intimidated to ride in traffic. But I do stay away from the busier parts on the weekends. It also seems that with Covid a lot of people forgot how to drive...... LOL Thanks for the info. I'm looking forward to your winter series.
