Not sure traditional Shepherd's Pie is supposed to be spicy but I guess its an interesting twist! My tips: - you need to get some caramelisation on the meat (whether lamb or beef) need to get some colour and really brown it. - the base should be onion and carrot (optional...celery) make sure you caramelise it a bit to get some flavour! - season with fresh or dried thyme and a bay leaf - you need to good rich beef/lamb gravy (from stock) with a good glug of Worcestershire sauce. A dash of tomato puree or red wine is optional but some like to add this. - mashed potato whipped with either a whisk or electric hand whisk. Plenty of butter, salt and white pepper (no need for milk/cream...that will make it too runny) - finish under a hot grill. Either fork the mashed potato and let it go all crusty and charred at the edges (very traditional). Or my favourite...finely chopped leeks with cheddar cheese and let it go all bubbly and melted. Obviously lamb is Shepherds Pie and beef is Cottage Pie but the principles are the same. Those are my tips from Lancashire passed down from my grandmothers (though they would never have added wine!) Traditionally in Lancashire we would have it with pickled beetroot or pickled onions!

I think people have this notion of traditional shepherds pie being a bland dish when it isn't at all. I think breaking it down and really focusing on each individual bit is the key. Plenty of butter, milk and pepper in the mash, maybe with some nice cheese on top. And the mince itself being cooked off with some caramelized onions, making sure to sear the mince somewhat and plenty of salt and pepper. Deglaze the pan with some stock/gravy and then add peas and carrots.

I’m going to give y’all my recipe. Diced onion and 2 cloves minced garlic; sautéed. Cook the minced meat, add salt and pepper to your liking (for me, I like quite a bit of pepper). Add an Oxo/stock cube, as well as a heaped teaspoon of marmite. Cook on a low heat. Add some vegetables (already boiled; not too firm, not too soft) - my choice is carrots and runner beans). Cut the veggies to your liking. Put the veggies in the meat. Add a bit of water and some gravy granules to give a little bit of a sauce so meat doesn’t dry out. Boil some potatoes; add a little bit of swede - mash it together with butter, milk, teaspoon of English mustard and little bit of salt. Add minced meat to dish, top with potato and put cheese. Cook for 20 mins in oven to make cheese golden!

Traditional shepherds pie is not " spicy " this is merely modern interpretations and it shouldn't contain minced lamb only leftover roasted lamb so none of these are technically shepherds pie...but I would eat all of them and lick the plate clean 😋😋

When will people realize there are hundreds of other people in just one comment section calling each other wrong over whether their way of preparing Shepard's pie is traditional or not? The funniest thing is you're all saying completely contradictory statements about the proper way to prepare authentic Shepherds pie. I think it is safe to assume that none of you actually know if no one can agree on a baseline.

Here on the East Coast Us most Shepard pies have corn. Interesting to see the differences. That one with carrots on it looked really good!

As a person from the east coast, I have NEVER heard of putting corn in Shepard's pie. And I've only seen the Carrots and peas.

It would be interesting to have a dish from a British chef in the line up and ask them to rate it making them think it’s another mum’s submission 😂. It could be Gordon Ramsay’s shepherd’s pie and two of them would say “it’s bland” 🤣

Patty, not everything needs chilli/spice. If you want to put something spicy on it, that's fine but cottage/shep pie is fine with fried onion, garlic and Worcestershire sauce. It's a simple thing

I’ve done my version of shepherds pie with the old El Paso Mexican minced taco meat sachets, smoked bacon, red wine, a bit of tomato puree and Parmesan cheese on top of the mash. People where literally fighting over it. I should make it again now that I’ve mentioned it 😂it’s not traditional at all but it was damn sure delicious

The dishes are more criticize, than appreciated, so to me that is not winning because it was a good dish, it was because they got less criticism points of the dish, and they won. That is not the same as winning, because a dish was good. I would like to see people win, because the dishes are good across the board, and not because the were just being merciful of the dish.

I like the Jamaican mum as she is honest and humble, the African mum has confidence and is thoughtful. Seeing that she prepared the entirety of her dish well in terms of flavour, spice and presentation. I don't quite like the dishonesty of the British mum; clearly I know it is a thing with many British folks and their passive aggressive demeanor but really - it is very plain to see. If you wish to participate in a contest. Leave your ego and bias out the the door. It isn't about your own cooking. It's about whose made the best and decide fairly without getting butt hurt.
