Aww wow! Congrats on your new daughter! Daughters are the best for dads. My little girl is 17 and I am desperately trying to get my old daily rider running so she can learn two wheeler street basics. It’s a 1978 Garelli Gran Sport. Checked everything that I know. New gas mix, carb taken down, cleaned replaced, clutch assembly inspected for worn rubber round cog thing? All good. It starts, but dies after a couple miles down the road. While it’s running, there’s an arc blue spark in the magneto flywheel where the points are located. Is that normal? This ped is SO sentimental to me. I use to have a wonderful Fisher-Price child’s bike seat that mounted perfectly to the cargo rack. When my daughter was 2 until she was 6 and could no longer fit in the shoulder straps I had to stop taking my best little buddy along for moped rides. Now she wants it running reliably to take off to college. I even have the exact model in a 1977 version for parts. I just can’t get it to run consistently. It use to be a perfect bike10 years ago. A half pedal kick off the bike on it’s center stand was all it took to start it. Now I can hardly start it cranking the peds for minutes at a time while clutching it in and out. I just want it fixed for her so I can detail it clean n shiny to take to college. Anyone have suggestions?
@MopedProblems
@MopedProblems 5 жыл бұрын
Yes, I know exactly what’s wrong with your moped. This is a classic case of bad condenser. The symptoms are exactly as you described: arcing at the points and losing spark after the bike warms up.... I am sure it’ll work again in 20 minutes after the bike cools down. You should do two things... - replace the condenser - clean the points. I would avoid using the bike until the condenser is replaced because the arcing at the points is damaging... if you keep it up, you will have to replace the points as well.

Moped Problems, Super! I’ll get online and order a condenser and clean the points. Thanks a zillion for the diagnosis! Looks like I’ll be able to enjoy riding again at my favorite leisure speed of 20-27mph this autumn. Really, thanks so much! I wish I still had the extra safe child seat for your girls to enjoy. It had bars that surrounded the little passenger making it hard for any crash impacts to reach the little ones in the safety seat. I sold it at a yard sale a few years back. If I hadn’t, I’d mail it to your shop. It was a great product.

I know country roads and your right, a Moped may not be the best form of transportation. Particularly if you’re going long distances on a road that requires you to go faster than 40 miles an hour. In that case you’re better off with a motorcycle... you just have to get a motorcycle license. BUT if you’re going shorter distances and you don’t want to get that motorcycle license maybe a Moped is just right

If you need some advices about how to make Tomos a beast, take a look at some slovenian, croatian, bosnian or serbian videos. Your Flexer is not good enough. Get an Tomos APN 6 from the 80`s or older - if you do it right, it goes around 80-90 km/h, or maybe even 100 km/h (cca 55- 60 mph). There is even how-to-do manual online. I have two, and done it myself without fancy tools or knowledge, and I am a teacher, not a mechanic. New Tomos bikes are slower, and made out of cheaper materials than the old ones. No electric bike can go like that! And it starts so fast that can kick you on the back like from the horse if you dont drive it carefully. Now I`m gonna put a Tomos T-15 machine on my APN, and I will, of course, change it a little, so that it can go for around 70 mph... good luck guys, and just keep on doing good stuff!
@MopedProblems
@MopedProblems 5 жыл бұрын
I wouldn’t call the new TOMOS bikes slow... definitely not made out of cheaper materials. I understand Slovenia pride for the models 100% made in Slovenia, but the older bikes have disadvantages too. If anything as the year went on, the models became more simple, which lost the complex look of the T12 but became easier to work on and gain access to all components like APN6 or A55 automatic mopeds.

@MopedProblems
@MopedProblems 5 жыл бұрын
Most mopeds can be “tricked out” to go faster. Sometimes it’s removing a restriction of some sort. Other times it’s adding a performance part (expansion pipe, larger cylinder). But sure, 40mph is a nice top speed for a moped... I’ve seen bikes modified up to 60mph

Heard you talking about the tomos kickstart and just wanted to write this comment about it. The tomos kickstart works way different than other modern mopeds like the bye bike. On a tomos the kickstart is mounted aroud a shaft that goes into te case, when you kick the kickstarter it rotates the shaft but when the shaft turns when te engine is running the the kickstart cant engage becouse it works with friction. It basicly works the same as an freewheel gear on a bicycle, and it is also not mounted in oil.
@MopedProblems
@MopedProblems 5 жыл бұрын
And that’s exactly how other kick starts work, except using a long shaft that can be spun in both sides, others have a tiny shaft that only rotates on one side. The internal worm gear (acts like a bindex) activates the Claw, meets the opposing claw attached to the starting gear. WHATS DIFFERENT is when you spin the shaft the other way, the worm gear forces the claw in the opposite direction meeting a 2nd claw that actives the pedaling. Regarding oil... yes it’s constantly lubricated by the transmission oil. It’s in the transmission.
@janbakker359
@janbakker359 5 жыл бұрын
@@MopedProblems Forgot that american tomos mopeds still have pedals. European kickstarts work without gears and outside of the oil.

We all know that the Bye bike is superior in every way. The Tomos is a great bike no doubt, but the Bye Bike is leaps and bounds a better riding, more capable bike. Also the oil pump is driven by a worm gear and doesn't feed the crank bearings. They are sealed after the bearing like a Derbi Flatreed motor. This is an obvious attempt to slander the Bye Bike, and hype up the bikes you sell. Sorta shady. Especially since the Tomos is a great bike and you shouldn't have to resort to weird stuff like this to sell them. Unless your goal is to just hurt Dos's ability to sell Bye Bikes later on. Weird move.
@MopedProblems
@MopedProblems 4 жыл бұрын
Based on the samples we bought, far from superior. We should do an update video really... Scott’s Bye Bike now has catastrophic failure on the kick starter side, the aluminum case shattered. Nonetheless it wasn’t just the quality and aesthetic that stopped us from pursuing, it was the cost... 50% more expensive than TOMOS. Now, I had spend the last two years communicating with old TOMOS dealers why they should buy TOMOS again, with a 15% price increase from 2013.... good reasons too (new catalytic pipe for EPA, European made components, superior headlight design) yet, a lot of dealers were not having it. They already supplemented their products for cheap $600 Chinese scooters. Say that to say, I had no arguments to carry a more expensive Moped that didn’t look as good or perform as good as TOMOS. After our testing we let it go. It was kind of a let down honestly... we spent a ton of time discussing how to make the Bye Bike EPA compliant (like we did for TOMOS), maybe a hundred email exchanges. But it was a big waste of time. I wish Dos the best of luck, it’s gonna be a challenge to move these bikes at those numbers. I hope they make a bunch of improvements first...
@ElPresidenteBuzzard
@ElPresidenteBuzzard 4 жыл бұрын
@@MopedProblems Man, that's wild that the one you messed with was not good. I've ridden both, and the Bye Bike pulls just as hard on flat, even better up hills. The kick start assembly I can't vouch for, but the oil injection feeding the crank isn't true. I've had the motor open in front of me. I will say that Tomos is a great bike, but the new ones also have their issues. Maybe you got a dud, I dunno. Watch this video again and tell me with a strait face you weren't purposefully dragging the Bye Bike, lol. Either way, you guys are doing cool stuff and I think you'll do well with the epeds and Tomos bikes. Making a video to roast a bike that isnt available in the states and that you dont plan to carry seems like useless content, unless there was some other reason for it, lol. I dunno Pete, I'm just keeping it 100 with you. It's just mopeds.
