My favourite thing by Céline is one of her most restrained recordings...If I Were You from her self-titled album. She just floats through that song... Love the Luc Plamondon album, too. All in French (Céline's first language, of course) and stellar...Le fils de Superman in particular is haunting (especially once you understand what the lyric says). Another song the video for which recalls this one is Bring Me To Life by Evanescence. Being that band, instead of the "opera rock" style of this Steinman song, it's got the angelic soprano of Amy Lee over a thunderous metal backing. The contrast really works.

Hi Saeed! I'm not surprised that the song sounds familiar. It was a monster hit internationally. It was hard not to hear it. For me, it was in the back of a cab, on the radio at the Dollarama, from a boombox in the park... I heard it everywhere. You probably did too, inadvertently, even in Europe. It was an impactful song from my formative years. No wonder I had a flare for the dramatic in relationships ha. I haven't listened to it in a very long time. Today it took on another meaning for me, as I did lose an ex a few years ago to liver failure, and our history was toxic and beautiful at the same time. This one hit hard today.

Jim Steinman wrote this song-this is a cover, original was by Pandora's Box, Elaine Caswell on vocals. (Meat Loaf also covered it, a duet with Marion Raven.) It was offered to Bonnie Tyler, but her records company didn't want to pay the royalties to Jim Steinman. The song was inspired by Wuthering Heights, and Steinman was trying to write the "most passionate, romantic song" he could-it's about obsession. Also note: many of the musicians on Dion's recording make up ML's band, including Todd Rundgren (guitar, vocals), Roy Bittan (Piano), and Kasim Sultan (vocals). If you like Celene Dion, I suggest her cover of Billy Joel's "Lullabye." (Celtic Woman also did an excellent version, as "Goodnight My Angel.")

The reason this sounds familiar to you may be because you have seen the videos for a Meatloaf song, or "Total Eclipse of the Heart" by Bonnie Tyler. The producer of those songs, Jim Steinman produced this, and his style is immediately recognizable. His songs and production are like mini Rock operas, and can at times get a bit bombastic, but it's very powerful.

Everyone is so familiar with that damned Titanic song, that they forgot all about her movie song debut 30 + years ago: Beauty and the Beast". Then there is the song for Deadpool 2. But this, THIS is the pinnacle of her dramatic vocal repertoire, and very hard to pull off convincingly.

Wow, another example of the generation gap! 🤣 I actually had no idea that Celine Dion had done a cover of this, but Meat Loaf was an integral part of my early adulthood, beginning with his appearance in The Rocky Horror Picture Show and throughout the years when he almost exclusively recorded songs written by Jim Steinman. I wore out two vinyl copies of the Bat Out of Hell album. When you started saying this sounded familiar I thought you meant you were familiar with Meat’s original. Anyway, if you’re interested you can hear it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a3rKepyQpJ50fdUsi=xWvhHtwat41eEsid
