C5 Corvette Steering Wheel Removal and Replacement

In this video, I remove the stock C5 steering wheel and air bag assembly to install an NRG quick release and and MPI steering wheel on a 2001 Corvette Z06. This is a Spec Corvette build project.

Thanks for the vid. In case it helps anyone else, my 3 jaw puller slipped of a few times. I then set it up to 2 jaws opposite each other, which helped the teeth fit between the plastic tabs on the back. Thanks again.

i like that steering wheel, good price too. is there any slop in the hub or quick attach?

No, there’s no play in the combo. That would drive me nuts.

Hey Josh, Just installed a Sparco wheel using the same NRG components on my C5. After completion, the steering is cocked to the left a few degrees while driving. Car tracks great and doesn't pull. I did notice that during installation the 1/2" spacer didn't seem to line up quite right. Took everything back off including the hub and got it all exactly how you have it in your video and its still off to the left. Could the alignment be messed up from installing the wheel? Thanks

It might be possible to have the hub cocked by 1 spline but it seems unlikely if the rectangular opening aligns with the airbag plug. How does the wheel align if you don’t use the spacer?

@@joshc1017 I guess I could take the clock spring out and run it without the spacer. The SRK500 spacer I have will not line up center on the SRK170 hub like yours did. The smaller holes for the quick release screws can’t be centered on the hub for some reason. It’s offset to the left causing the wheel to be offset to the left. Very strange.

@@KTM228KID Something's not right about that. The spacer should center on the hub. I've only done two of these but both were identical and lined up perfectly. Might be helpful to see pictures or video of how that spacer is lining up on the hub.

@@joshc1017 I ended up pulling the clock spring off and it appears the hub is now straight on the shaft. I think the clock spring got clocked just enough off where it should have been causing the hub to lineup wonky and then causing the spacer to not line up right haha. Just gonna run it with no clock spring, being 6’2 I’m happy about the extra half inch on clearance anyway!

I've never done it in reverse but don't see why you couldn't... The attachment point for the puller to the hub will be different, obviously.

Noticed you left the clock spring on, where some others take them off and are able to use the NRG hub without the need for the spacer to clock the wheel correctly. Is there a reason for this?
