They both look great. Canons image looks more robust in my opinion. I’ve graded a lot of C70 footage and pushed it pretty hard and it held up pretty nice. But specially on that backlit scene of Jake, you can see how much more saturation the skin tones have overall. For me, that’s one of the most important things. Also, I don’t get how the FX3 can be called a cinema camera if it doesn’t even have the option to use shutter angle.. I’m sure they could fix that with firmware though. But kinda crazy

I like the Canon image just a slight bit more, as to my eyes it's more organic. Having said that, I'm deep in the Sony system and think that's the way to go for commercial work. Amongst the latest couple generations of Sony mirrorless bodies (I own A1, A7Siii, A7R4, A7R3, and A73) they all have full frame sensors, same mount, same batteries, and the bodies themselves of each generation are nearly identically proportioned. That makes life 1000% easier than trying to adapt lenses, multiple type batteries and chargers, different sized bodies with different support requirements etc. For hobbyists things like this don't matter, but for my team and I shooting many location jobs per week its a game changer.

One really important thing about catalyst browse post stabilization is your shutter speed will impact image quality a lot. Or put another way, 180 shutter is probably too slow and you need at least a 90 degree shutter or fast. Otherwise the catalyst browse stabilization will show those smearing frames where the image was blurred by movement, instead of a sharp image. It’s a very useful data point but it has limitations.

@@eware3000 You could very easily use the FX3 for all of that. Converting from 23.976 to 24 is not a big deal at all. @noahyv3 жыл бұрын
Yeah I own a c70 and a7s3 which is essentially the same as an fx3 and I never use the a7s3 because the c70 does everything better. Dynamic range and processing are one of the biggest differences. Sony forces you to use heavy NR that hides the much higher noise levels but makes shadows very mushy. That also means sensitivity is hugely different. Fx6 or prores raw lets you turn off NR but then you're left with much much more noise than the c70. With the Sony you signficantly sacrifice DR as you go beyond iso640, whereas the c70 is several stops better in the shadows so you can push it a stop no problem, plus a speedbooster gives you another stop of sensitivity so you can essentially shoot at 3200ei on the c70 and still get way more DR than the a7s3 has a iso640. Sony has better AF but only with native lenses. You can get good AF with newer sigma EF lenses with their adapter but pretty much all other EF lenses are not supported in video mode. Whereas the c70 has pretty good AF even on random old EF lenses. EF lenses are key because you can own them and put them on everything worth shooting on from red to arri to Canon and Sony to some degree.

I’m currently a Canon filmmaker as well, and I’m sticking with Canon because I’m already in the Eco-system. However I have to say its some what a disappointment as it seems Canon is just relying on loyalty for users to stay on board, and not because it is offering latest great features and built quality… This is one major point to why I haven’t upgraded to the C70, because I feel it could have been better for what is worth.

FX3 for the win. Small compact, straight to the point and cheaper than C70. In the end you achieve the same result - unfortunately for C70 Is too big. the ND Filter built in C70 Is a nice touch but pretty much every one has an ND filters in a camera bags these days.

FX3 is a great option for some and it definitely has its advantages. I think it’s a great option for people. Canon cameras are so soft. After 5d mark iv they ditched mjpeg and everything becomes soft. Like worst 4k quality I ewer saw. And everyone is like well they try to ditch that digital look. Like we can't soften the image in post... It is softer than panasonic g7 with sharpness and noise reduction disabled in camera... Something is going on with how codec gets information from sensor....
@GriffinConway3 жыл бұрын
In my humble opinion I would disagree. I find the sharpness to be very similar and I find it much easier to sharpen in post then to soften. Once the sharpness is baked in it is hard to get rid of it. Most colorists add sharpening in post as needed, that way it gives you the control. I think that’s why lots of people like shooting raw because there is no sharpening and you have total control we how much you want to add.
@smalldeekgeorge3 жыл бұрын
I hate sharpening and noise reduction in camera. I always turn that off. If I put panasonic s5 in 35mm mode crop and c70 side by side c70 4k doesn't just look softer but there is lost in details around hair. Maybe its just my unit....

I would appreciate feedback: I'm trying to figure out the best cinebuild for under $8k. I need 4k and would like 4K 120 capability. I’m finding that glass and accessories are more important than camera body in the long run. So that’s where I want over half of my money to go. I wish I could just start with a tokina cinema vista 25mm T1.5 prime and build from there, but at $6k (5k used) there’s no way to make it happen. Instead I’ll get some very popular photography lens (canon or sony) that I can easily resell in the future ($2k). Regardless, I think Full Frame is here and taking over, so any lens I choose needs an image circle that will work with full frame. Of course, those lenses work with S35 too. It just looks “cropped”. Great 4x5.65 filters in a solid matte box is next on the list because the image results are very good with solid filters and it transfers to future builds regardless of lens ($2k). Next up, it seems like a larger screen is ubiquitous to a good rig and it’s usually attached to at least a top-handle ($1k). At this point we are at around $5K That narrows it to the A7Siii, the R5 and I have to depend on black friday to pull the price under $8K. Thoughts?
