Just finished the video! I really enjoyed it. Season 2 has always been my favourite season of the show; I really loved the dual plotlines in the EF and Storybrooke, I loved the clever backstories that filled in plot holes (Queen of Hearts, Manhattan), and I loved Cora as a villain. I think this video has convinced me that Season 2B was not as great as I remembered it being, and you’ve made good arguments here. In addition to what you highlighted, I think the fact that several characters were just abandoned in Season 2B, and it was really narratively unsatisfying. In particular, Ruby, Dr Whale and Jefferson had all been set up as characters with more to offer. I agree with you that Cora’s arc should have to extended the final 6 episodes of the show. What I think should’ve happened is that after failing to acquire Rumple’s dagger, Cora and Regina should have gone to Wonderland to find a powerful weapon like the vorpal blade. Snow, choosing vengeance, should have actively pursued her to Wonderland, bringing David and maybe characters like Ruby and Jefferson to the world. This plotline would have eventually ended with Snow killing Cora, but it could have been narratively more fulfilling. The season finale should reveal the Home Office stuff, and set up S3. Flashbacks could include: -How Cora came to power in Wonderland. -How Jefferson lost his wife (it was implied to have been in Wonderland) -More of Rumple and Cora’s history (as implied in “Into the Deep”). It felt like the show was trying to tell us that Cora bested Rumple and took the globe from him at one point. Meanwhile, the Henry/Emma/Neal and Tamara/Greg and Rumple/Belle plots could continue in Storybrooke, but on more of a slow burn so that it wouldn’t feel rushed. I still think the flashbacks in some episodes would be okay to say: -Welcome to Storybrooke -Lacey (a Rumbelle centric, but redone to not be repetitive of Skin Deep) -Selfless Brave and True (but rewritten in a way that doesn’t feel forced and filler. Maybe it’s more Tamara focused than August focused. S3 would get to the finale Baelfire flashbacks in the season premiere. For Me, this would start S3 in Storybrooke rather than Neverland, and escalate the Home Office plotline more gradually. I think the time was not used properly in Neverland in S3, and that the plot there could have benefited from a faster pace.

For me what did it is the fumbling of the emotional toll of what s1 did to Emma. She discovered the truth about her family AND that fairytales exist and surround her, s2 should be the time for her to process that. she found her family, but they've not been her family for 28 years, and the woman who has her son is dangerous. Yet, Emma is expected to just play saviour. Why introduce such a strong heroine if you're not gonna center her in the story or treat her character with respect?

I didn’t hate the flashbacks in “In the name of the brother” as much as you, I thought the concept was interesting. The problem was that there was NO follow up. They could’ve done something really interesting in future seasons if characters like Dorothy, Cruella or Jekyll & Hyde were from this world too and it connected to a deeper side plot. But instead, the writers chose to just ignore it, when it could’ve been tied in cleverly. I think that’s why it sticks out

Usually the characters will say how old they are or make references to how long it’s been since their last flashback. I have a google sheet of the entire timeline laid out so that i can make sense of it. much easier to estimate the dates that way

did not want to spam with comments but your videos are super fun to engage with! so here are some collected thoughts: - love how you're digging into some tv writing history and terminology! would highly recommend buffy the vampire slayer and the x files if you enjoy monster of the week format and many-episode seasons with solid overarching storylines. also doctor who but like, 2005-2016 doctor who. they just don't make shows like that anymore :'( - "need i remind you that you got your phd from a curse" GIRL - it's great how you're trying to make sense of themes and meanings of clusters of episodes (ex. "is change possible?"). it elevates the video from pure recap to legitimate media analysis. you mentioned in a previous video that this show is very dear to your heart, and that comes through in the amount of effort you've put into understanding and appreciating its creative execution. even when you're being critical, it's both 1) funny and 2) coming from a place of loving the series at its best. - lana parilla's deranged cry-laughter during the confrontation with mary margaret on the doorstep... damn - how much work was it to plot this show on a calendar? especially the flashbacks? do you find that the continuity holds up, especially as the seasons go on? - of course august booth was the copyright culprit. that man exists to cause problems - "yay! we officially lose august from the cast" - the way you lay out the air dates is so fascinating. i was pretty young (11-12ish) during the early seasons and watched the episodes weekly with my mom as they came out. season 1 was HYPE and we kept up with s2 until the cora stuff resolved (we did kinda agree it was crashing but my mom thought hook was hot so we held on). i remember seeing the end few episodes of s2 after the break and being like "wait there's more? the season wasn't over?" and getting CRAZY whiplash from tamara. i recall feeling like tamara's whole thing kinda spoiled the baelfire reveal, because that was so perfect and well-foreshadowed/planned, and tamara felt so random. i don't think we tuned in for s3, maybe the first episode. i remember emma in a tank top being rugged and that's pretty much it. i think you said in previous video that you weren't around to watch the first few seasons as they aired, so i thought you'd appreciate knowing that your analysis of the air schedule rings true to viewer experience - hook is so funny in s2 like he really is just getting thrown around and does not care. they introduced that man to be pretty and help with plot conveniences and he got the job done - great conclusion! do you recommend watching season 3, like, in 2024?? is that the show at its most iconic? bc now i'm kinda sad i dipped right before things got fun!

omg the timeline continuity makes no sense by like season 5 but for a while it’s pretty solid in terms of the dates and order of the flashbacks. i would totally recommend watching the rest of the show! you don’t need to watch the last season though because it’s not that good. the first half of Season 3 is decent but the second half is the peak of OUAT. S4 is also good in both halves so i include 3 and 4 in the peak conversation. S5 is where things go downhill and by S7 the show is unrecognizable but still a fun time 7 times out of 10 😭

It's so sad what the writers did as the seasons went on bc season 1 was so strong, especially for Belle and Rumple, and as you said, in season 2 and onward it becomes a cycle where nothing interesting happens between them despite their amazing set up bc instead of real progress they go in circles. Regina is the only one who ever gets real progressive arcs but even she goes in circles. It just makes me sad bc I'm obsessed with Rumplestiltskin in this show he's so interesting and layered but his story with all the characters gets so muddled over time to just be on loop and it ruins his dynamic with everyone and makes his growth so shallow and forced 😭 Like Belle's land without magic identity being the opposite of who she is originally and becoming an enabler for dark Gold is a genuinely fun concept but it is handled sooo terribly and rushed that it just doesn't feel right. I feel there are many ways we could have gotten that mini arc with them in a more organic way that wasn't randomly tacked on at the end of the season

like, on one hand, was the lacey storyline unnecessary? sure. but did teenage me eat up belle's bad girl era? also yes. i was really hoping that rumple was going to realize that even though he loved belle's dark side, he didn't want to be bad anymore, and that would really further his redemption arc if he proved capable of loving her from a distance rather than always doing the most selfish thing. (though in general, it was so frustrating how often belle was only used to hurt rumple - by hook and by regina, this season. there was a lot i wanted from her character, i loved her so much) also, you're so right, henry's parentage being revealed at the same time that rumple kind of realizes henry (his grandson) is supposed to be his undoing, is so good. when this show was good, it was awesome.

I think Once hit it's stride when they started properly doing season arcs. S1/S2 feel stretched very thin to fit an arbitrary episode quota. S3-S7 can be too fast paced at times but the pacing is pretty brisk and solid. S2 also has a notable lack of exploration of the dynamic between Regina and Emma that really made S1. Season 2 is my least favorite season of the show.

@@cainvarner The second half of S6 is a parody of itself and the first half of S7 is terribly unoriginal but the other halves of have a slew of my favorite episodes from "The Savior" through "Wish You Were Here" to "Wake Up Call" to "Leaving Storybooke". It's that slump in between that's my most hair pulling during rewatches. Season 5 has a pretty consistent quality across the board and the worst the season has to offer, is middling at best. I'd rank the season arcs from favorite to least favorite: 6A, 3A, S7, S5, 4B, 3B, 4A, S1, S2, 6B Are you going to rank the season arcs at the end of your series or can I ask you now?
