A Bobby Grich card was one of the first baseball cards I ever had collected. There was something captivating about him as a baseball fan. And then I remembered watching this brawl on "This Week In Baseball." That was a fantastic TV show for baseball fans.

A year later Drysdale and Angels manager Jim Fregosi got into a fight on the team plane. I think Drysdale was questioning the toughness of Jim Barr-who broke his hand after punching a wall or something- thus missing the playoffs. Fregosi, defending his player got mad and they started to fight. Fregosi was kicking Drysdale ass when they broke up the fight.

I loved this era of Angel Baseball. Gene Autry was bringing in free agents giving us long suffering fans something to cheer about. Don Drysdale calling the play by play. I remember watching this game. At 1.54, check the left side of the brawl. Big D starts to say Baylor, then clip cuts away. Never forget it. Grich would be in the HOF had he been a Cub or Yankee. For that matter, I find it unfair that Boston's Jim Rice (while a great hitter!) is in the HOF, but Jim Wynn (who toiled mostly in the Astrodome, a virtual opposite of hitter-friendly Fenway) is not! OK, rant over, let the punches fly, LOL.

It's not nearly as crazy as it sounds. He had 8220 plate appearances - which actually isn't that much for a 17-season career, but it's a good sample. He had an OPS+ of 125 for his career. That's the same as Yogi Berra (who had only 8359 plate appearances over 19 seasons) and six other Hall of Famers. Some prominent HOFers with a career OPS+ lower than Grich's: Tim Raines, Ernie Banks, Kirby Puckett, Robin Yount... And his career WAR (70.9) beats guys like Tony Gwynn, Duke Snider, and Willie McCovey. Not that those are the only two things that matter, but those two stats do show that he has a case. More recent players are not as well represented in the Hall as they should be, so I think guys like Grich - along with Lou Whitaker and Ted Simmons, right off the top of my head - deserve another look. Dwight Evans, too.
@JonahLoeb
@JonahLoeb 6 жыл бұрын
I mean, I guess, if you want the HOF voters to look at nothing but WAR. Grich might deserve a second look as one of the better-hitting second basemen of the expansion era, but Wynn? A power hitter who finished his career with fewer than 300 HR, fewer than 1000 RBI, a .250 BA, an .802 OPS (compared to Rice's .854), below average in every single HOF metric...it just doesn't add up for me. Hall of Very Good, for sure, but not a HOFer.
