All those farmers who grow medical marijuana or weed to sell in dispensaries and have invested in equipment and infrastructure are going to lose their shirts. I meet a lot of people like this who are or were in the military. I don't know why they think this is ok.
@challajuzalei6126 Жыл бұрын
@@erinkerbs6789 sometimes the military is the last option or only option for people. Generally this includes people who have little to no financial knowledge due to their upbringing. It’s sad, but not surprising that many times we find veterans are bad with money.
@erinkerbs6789 Жыл бұрын
@@challajuzalei6126 I do think that's part of it. My husband went in for this reason, but he wanted to learn to get out of the mess his family was in, not make it worse. On the other side, debtors prey on service members. There are car lots, check cashing places, pawn shops, and more just off every base, and the Star Card and other debts from the BX/PX and others on base. But the military also has classes on finance like from Dave Ramsey and Suze Orman. They also have the TSP for retirement which is one of the cheapest retirement options on the market. Also, healthcare is almost free for them. I think there are a lot of reasons there are so many military members and vets in financial trouble.
@challajuzalei6126 Жыл бұрын
@@erinkerbs6789 oh, absolutely! I think we agree on a lot here. I’m glad your husband was able to learn and not fall for the traps that many veterans fall for. My dad is a similar way. He grew up poor and the military provided direction for him. He already had a scarcity mindset going in (which your husband likely did as well), so I think that also dictates much of his financial behavior. I think that all I was saying in my comment is that people like my father and your husband had a foundation of at least fear (I don’t want to go back to xyz) that drove them to financial success. Unfortunately, a lot of people that come from that aren’t able to turn it into something positive. As you said, when the debtors come and they are able to provide that feeling of “having something” it’s often time’s irresistible to people like that. They didn’t have anything for so long, so now the idea of having a nice car or whatever the purchase is draws them in.

First off, love your content! It’s structure is great, very informative and in some cases your guests’ stories and struggles are very relatable. By chance are you planning on doing follow up episodes a year from now that can show progress or even growth of these guests? That would definitely be something that can give some of us viewers struggling through paying off bad debt some hope as we all continue to grow. Anyways just a thought. Keep up the great work Caleb!

I'm a vet myself... there is something not adding up with his disability payment. For a disability of that level ($3,000+/month) that means he has a disability rating of 100%, or near 100%... especially in a low cost of living state like Oklahoma. In other words, he has been deemed by the VA as unable to work or a potential danger be around others. Now, he could have sleep issues (sleep issues is usually around 50% immediately - VA states that sleep affects the entire day) but he's either not telling the entire truth, or he's hiding something. Especially if he was a marine stationed in Japan... a country that we are allied with... ie, he's not getting shot at. I'm not saying he's a s***bag but something doesn't make sense. I know several veterans who are 100% disabled, but they were combat vets with multiple purple heart awards, or had been on multiple deployments to the Middle East (not Japan of all places). Something tells me he is milking the system... as many veterans do after they get out. I'll leave it up to each individual veteran to determine for themselves if they "deserve" a certain disability rating. After that 8 minute mark, I had a hard time really measuring how "bad" his financial situation truly is.

Look I'm all for supporting our vets and I would MUCH rather see taxpayer money going directly to vets than to the black hole that is govt spending, but bro straight up gamed the system for real. $3800/mo in tax free money for life (essentially equivalent to a $65k/year salary or $1m retirement using the 4% rule) bc of one single incident. We're supposed to believe that bro can never work again bc of one incident that resulted in no physical injuries? More like the govt used the VA program as a "settlement" to prevent him from any litigation towards the Marines or the staff sgt. Just feels real grimey to me tbh...
@sabias3932 Жыл бұрын
You're obviously not "all for supporting our vets" if you think YOU can decide whether a vet's PTSD is severe enough to warrant disability. He could have ended up homeless with PTSD and really be a danger to himself and others and his disability is what is keeping him from that place. Your judgements are the perfect example of why vets are so reluctant to seek mental health assistance which they are absolutely entitled to and why close to 20 VETERANS DIE BY SUICIDE PER DAY.
@JRenee141 Жыл бұрын
100% agreed.
@DailyMeditation365 Жыл бұрын
On the surface you appear to be correct, but that one incident may have just been the final straw. Unless you have served, you have no idea how mentally taxing and draining on your soul it can be. I never had anxiety until I joined, now I have insomnia, can't sleep more than a few hours, and am expected to be on call 24/7. Even when I'm on leave (my vacation) I still get called and texted at all hours. The rank system plays into the hands of abusive senior NCOs and officers. We shouldn't have to air all the shit we have had to deal with to justify to you or anyone else our disabilities from serving.

Yeah if he had sued for the assault he likely would of ended up with way more money costing the tax payers more money overall. This way everyone kind of wins, grimy or not, less money paid out long term, and he gets compensated decently for the assault and can live a decent life.
