Require the buyer to sign the pink slip right next to your signature at the time of purchase. Make sure you witness this or even take a picture of the signed document before handing it over. There is a scam where the buyer could turn around and sell the car without transferring the title to their name. If this happens you are still technically the owner of the vehicle even if you “sold” it. If they refuse to sign the pink slip, red flag! and don’t sell the car.

What if the vehicle is registered to a company? On sections one there is a company name. Section 2 has persons name. How many people need to sign it? And also how do i know whos signature can go on where it states company name? Any level employee can sign off? Or it has to be by the owner of the company?

Why would the owner print their name on the "printed name of agent signing for a company" line?

It's misleading on the "print name section" on the bottom portion. There's a lot of KZbinrs that indicate you leave that blank. It says "Printed Name Of Seller Or Agent Signing For a Company".

Hi. Is the car registered under your name? If the car is registered under your name, you have 2 options. You can either A) apply for a new title at the DMV, or B) you can get 2 forms from the DMV (the forms are called a "Reg 227" and a "Reg 262") and you can legally sell the car with those forms instead of the title. If you are NOT the registered owner and you lost the title, then you would need to contact the registered owner and have him fill out a "Reg 227" and "Reg 262".

The Iron Force the seller keeps that form, completes it and mails it to the dmv. Alternatively the seller can go online and complete that form on the dmv website

so i read on the dmv site regarding the odometer "Are There Any Exceptions To This Requirement? Yes. Reporting the odometer mileage reading is encouraged, but not mandatory if: the vehicle is 10 years old or older," and other points. i am transfering a 2004 vehichle and its 2017 and i noticed he didnt mark the odometer so should i leave it blank?

I’m in situation right now that i don’t know how to solve. Months ago I sold my car and to someone on Craigslist and we both signed the title, but the problem is I didn’t get a copy of that(title) Now I can’t get a hold of him. No ID or cell phone. I got a letter from from the DMV saying that I need to renew my registration for the car. I went there and told them that I sold the car and I don’t own it anymore. I went to my local police and they said that they can’t do anything about it. If that person got a ticket or worse in an accident, it’s all will lead to me because he didn’t register it under his name. Please I need help. What should I do?

Regarding the odometer, what if the engine has just been rebuilt.

If the odometer was set-up back to zero, then you could check the "odometer reading is not the actual mileage" It's good business practice to disclose everything you know about a vehicle when you sell a vehicle unless it's an "as-is" sale situation which not all the same things apply. Generally speaking, it's good business to make sure they know how many miles were on the car before and after the engine rebuild was done.

I actually came across this last year as a buyer of a used car from a private party. We went to sign over title and before he signed it I recognized it was not in his name. RED FLAG. I asked for a copy of the title transfer receipt from the DMV, which he did not have. The car was gifted to him by his neighbor a few months prior and he never transferred title to his name. I explained that technically it was not his car to sell. We got his neighbor to come out and sign the title over to me. When I shared this story at the DMV, while transferring ownership and ordering a new title, they confirmed I was completely correct.

Martin Distor that part is the “lien holder” signature section. You should not sign that section. A lien holder typically is a bank that has financed the vehicle. If a lien holder exists (meaning their info is listed in that section), then you would need to have the lien holder sign that section. If no lien holder info is listed there, leave that section blank.

What if my name (as the owner of the vehicle) is listed as the lienholder? The car is paid off in full and I noticed that yours is blank in that section. Do I need to sign that very bottom portion if my name is listed there, or do I still skip signing that piece?

What if the seller's name has changed since the title was issued, i.e. a lady's maiden name is on the title? Should she sign her maiden name or married name (or both)?

That could depend many things including possible the other paperwork that the state has on file. So, for your particular situation, please check directly with the DMV and see what they want you to do. It's understandable to want an answer to that, but it's better to not tell you specifically the wrong thing without all of the information required to answer, which would be against our privacy practices to discuss further in a public forum. If you have a car that you want to sell us, then, as our customer we could certainly recommend exactly what should be done in your situation.

The title transfer is not valid unless line 1a is signed by the registered owner. The buyer would need to go back to the seller and get line 1a signed.

Are you talking about the "Lienholder" section? When I paid off my car, I got the pink slip and the finance company had stamped and signed the bottom. That means it's been paid off and they have no controlling interest in the vehicle anymore. That's how it should be, I believe.

Who signs the "signature releases, etc." column on the bottom of the title? Major oversight on the poster's part. That lack of basic instruction rendered this useless for me.

jahnjahn4 the bottom right side of the front of the title is for signatures of lienholder (usually it would be a bank or a financial institution if you owe money on the car). If a lienholder is listed on the bottom left of the title, then their signature would be required on the bottom right. If no lienholder is listed, you should leave the signature boxes on the bottom right blank. Hope they helps

I live in California and I want to purchase a motorcycle from a private party. His dad will be handling the transaction since the seller is currently out of the country. The registered owner of the motorcycle had signed line 1A on the front of the title but didn't fill in the mileage or sign the signature line to verify the mileage. That is a separate issue because the process is not the same for all vehicle transactions...like selling a car for junk to a dealer would be one example. Smog also does NOT apply to older cars. Every car that has a title, or is titled, is owned by the state. If you buy a car and do get a title, guess what, the state listed on that title, owns your car. They can take it any time they wish. Most times they give a reason when they do take it, but they do not have to give any reason at all. So if you want to pay someone to use a vehicle that you can never own, get a car with a title. If you want that title to reflect you as the true owner, good luck with that, I have tried. You would have to get the name of the state off that title. There are ways to make or build your own car and bypass the state, but they don't take to kindly to it. There is no law that says you have to travel in a state owned machine.
