Thanks for your in-depth instruction. I've done this a number of times but when gifting a car to my son last year, we didn't put "GIFT" in the purchase price on the back and it held up the transfer. We wouldn't have known until I decided to follow up when my son did not receive the new title. There are so many rules to follow. Thanks again.

One important note regarding smogging a transfer vehicle. There are some exceptions for smogging: (See California DMV Form 256). For example, I don't believe a smog test is needed if the vehicle is being gifted to a relative.

10:33 it's actually seller's responsibility to pass the smog check before selling a car, according California DMV official website, but for some reason private party almost never do that as a seller (car dealer do though) and then buyer have to pass the smog check in order to register the car in DMV.

I'm about to sell my vehicle.What happens if the seller enters the correct purchase price paid to him/her for the vehicle, but the buyer then lies, by writing down "gift" , so as to avoid taxes? Wouldn't that discrepancy be caught by the DMV?

As the seller, I think I should make the buyer sign the title in person because when I report the sale to DMV I'm giving that person's name/address. If the buyer doesn't sign the title, he can use the title that's under my name to sell the car to someone else (maybe he decides he doesn't want the car after a month). Then that second buyer will be calling me to say he's having a hard time transferring the car to himself.

You can call the DMV in complicated cases. It might need other documentation.

if it states on the title the word (and), then both owners will need to sign. if the title states (or), only one of the owners will need to sign. it will state the (and/or) where the owners names are listed

Would love to see a video on when a person buys a used car from a dealer, pays it off so now he has the pink slip. Now years later he sells it. Because the pink slip will have the original sellers name on it and no where for the new owner to sign when he sells it years later.

save time and dont go to dmv. just sign the first line, line a, where you sign and date it. that's all you need to do when you are selling the vehicle. if the vehicle is over 10 years old you dont need to put mileage

just the title after the vehicle has been smogged. you can bring the smog papers, but it doesnt really matter since after the car has been smogged the results are electronically sent to the dmv and they can pull that info up on their computer
