I love these series, especially with the botanical tangents. It also helps benefit shoppers. Nurseries are pretty hit and miss at representing what to expect when things grow up. This really helps provide a better picture (or, smell, rather :D)

All of my sarracenia are flowering at the moment. No problem, I'm glad they made it through the winter!

I love the explanation about why different species of Sarracenia bloom at different times. Fantastic info! So far, I only have one Sarracenia in bud right now, S. venosa 'Minor Black' but I feel like it's going to unfurl at any moment. :) All of the rest of my Sarrs are probably too young still to flower? Or they may come up later in spring?
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
They can flower at surprisingly small size but they could be waiting to flower next year. There are some species still waiting to send up flowers in our greenhouse so it may also just be that your plants aren’t quite ready and will flower later in the spring!

I haven't found the Part 2 about Sarracenia flowers that you were planning to make a couple of years ago. Did that get overlooked?

Is it better to keep pollen in the freezer, or in the fridge ? Thanks !

In the fridge! The freezer can be too cold.

When is the best time to pollinate?
@California_Carnivores Жыл бұрын
It’s best to do it within 2-5 days of the flower petals opening fully.

I have heard conflicting information on if you should cut off Sarracenia flower first year after purchasing bare root. What is your opinion about this?
@carnivorousplants52172 жыл бұрын
Definitely if you want decent pitchers, plant can die from stress too.
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
In our experience, Sarracenia, unlike flytraps, do not aggressively sacrifice leaves to make flowers and they don’t generally flower when they are too young to do so. You can let Sarracenia flower without too much worry. But, as a rule of thumb, we would trim flowers off of freshly transplanted plants to put as much energy as possible to root and leaf development.

@@carnivorousplants5217 thank you. That's what I ended up doing for those reasons. I figured better safe than sorry!

Why are there so many x mooreis out there when flava and leucophylla bloom so far apart? Are there any tricks to time up flowers? I have had no success with refrigerating pollen.
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
Flava and leucophylla bloom at the same time so it’s really easy to cross those two. The easiest way to cross different species is to keep the pollen or the flowers in the fridge

I’ve purchased a sarracenia purpurea recently and put it on the windowsill with a small grow light, now it has a flower bud even though it should go into dormancy soon. Do I still put the plant into dormancy or do I skip it this year? Also, should I cut the flower bud?
@California_Carnivores2 ай бұрын
They do sometimes do this, have a late season flower that’s out of place. You could skip one years dormancy if you wanted to, but definitely do it next year if you skip this year!

I’m getting worried about my Sarracenia plants. They still have their old pitchers which only had their tops die back. But there has been no growth this year. We are zone 7b/8a
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
Ours come up early because of being in the greenhouse and our zone is a little different than yours, 9b. As long as you feel the rhizome and it’s firm, it should be healthy. Trim off the dead pitchers and make sure the plants are getting full sun. It may just take a little longer in your area.

360p Video quality?
@California_Carnivores2 жыл бұрын
That’s really odd, it was filmed and uploaded in 4K. I don’t know why it would be such low quality. This has happened before though so I’ll work on figuring out the problem! (We’re great with plants, okayish with technology so it may take a bit 😂🤦♀️)

Why do some flowers not turn to the sun.
@California_Carnivores8 ай бұрын
Sarracenia flowers start out pointing down and then slowly turn upwards as they age!
