Mass Effect 3 does this so much better. The Reapers, a race of sentient machines 2 kilometers high, are invading. The Reapers come every 50,000 years and wipe all organic life from the galaxy. They have been doing this for over a billion years and perhaps as many as 13 billion. This cycle, a relatively small one, still has trillions of people. Trillions. With a t. I don't even know the word for the number to describe the low end of their body count. And yet, they devote a large subplot to this one idiot kid who refused help from your character at the start of the game and gets vaporized by space monsters. Your character keeps having nightmares about that kid's death while millions of people are currently being liquefied and you wind up seeing hallucinations of his ghost or some shit. Have I mentioned that robot Cthulhus are currently murdering entire planet populations at a time while the game is trying to hammer in about one little bastard that refused help? Game developers as of late think mentioning that kids are mortal is like writing Schindler's List. Sure, there's literally hundreds of corpses in view, but this one, he or she hadn't been alive long enough for the Earth to rotate the sun 18 times! MY GOD!

I remember my country had a war with Spain in 1866 that lasted a year maybe if we are being generous and it was summarized by historians as "a stupid war without purpose or objectives that nobody is even sure how it even started". Basically, Spain had a beef with Peru over something, but Peru refused Spain's terms and the Spaniards took some puny Peruvian islands covered in bat shit. When the Spanish fleet arrived at the neighboring country, Chile, my own country, not only we refused to supply their fleet because they didn't do the proper salute, or something equally stupid, when they entered Chile's main port, Valparaíso, we declared war to the Spaniard bastards on a pissing contest to determine which country was more of a dick before new year. The Spanish fleet responded to this by asking the population to evacuate the city and then proceeded to fire its cannons against the port and main buildings for about an hour before leaving Chile never to return again. The only casualties of this bizarre conflict were a couple of drunkards unaware of Valparaíso's evacuation. We firmed and armistice 5 years later and a peace treaty 18 years later, probably because of a bureaucrat found out we were still at war between the two countries.

Ok this might just be me, and that's certainly a possibility, but what the fuck is Makarov? Is he a terrorist? Because as Zackaev's successor he should be in charge of Russia. Is in charge? No because he kidnaps the president (spoiler if you didn't know your fucking protagonist would die 20 times in a cutscene and Makarov wasn't in that Mi-8. But if you didn't know that then you're probably illiterate). But then why does the Russian military listen to him and hold their own president hostage? The ultranationalists won so the loyalists would be the terrorists since they lost and Kamarov (or whatever the friendly russian that Gaz fuck up in the 4th one is named) is in a resistance against the ultranationalists. Also Russia invades Europe even though their president is being held hostage. Is that how it works? If I hold Putin hostage then can I tell Russians to leave blokes who want to bang blokes the fuck alone (also dames who want to bang other dames)? Furthermore you go to a meeting where Makarov meets with the Russian military leaders. So if he was part of the gov and controlled them why did he need to kidnap the President? Just tell him what to fucking do! And if all of this was a coup that everyone was mysteriously cool with, then why would he not just take power after the 4th game and not dick around for the 2nd game? Oh yeah because then the plot would make sense and we could't have a plot that could have been in a children's cartoon show or James Bond movie.

I saw somebody praise the CoD games for causing there to be break from the overuse of WWII, but I find the story in the Modern Military shooters to be just as monotonous. It's always Russia starts a war, China starts a war, or go kill terrorists, in the last CoD game, America is invaded by a coalition of Latin America, seriously. The developers tried to avoid offending by throwing in an evil American in the last game, but as Yahtzee brought up, the Russians didn't need much persuading and are presented as cartoonishly evil.

I think that the games industry should do more games about Vietnam. That would be an awesome setting for a shooter that could be about more than just shooting people from other nationalities. Vietnam was an intensely psychological war, and having a game set then would be awesome for making gamers question if shooting up another country cause their different really makes you feel warm and fuzzy still. In Vietnam the Viet Cong would use Guerrilla hit-and-run tactics at all hours of day and night so the soldiers couldn't fall into a consistent schedule of sleep, and most Viet Cong did not dress any different than common civilians, so many soldiers were taken unawares and killed by people they thought were non-combatants. All this led to the U.S. using more extreme measures to ensure that villages weren't harboring freedom fighters, like torching whole villages with flame-throwers and executing anyone mildly suspect. That sort of morally grey setting would be a great place to set a game. Not to sound like I want to turn a bloody and psychologically abrasive war into something to glorify or aggrandize, but if we've done it shamelessly with World War 2, why not Vietnam. P.S. My great uncle was in Vietnam, so I have had a first person account of someone's experience there, I'm not totally ignorant.
