It won't grow large at all. It won't even be able to survive for very long in the ocean, since it needs oxygen and totally lacks specialized organs like gills, skin to resist sun exposure, or even a skeleton to swim faster. And on land, gravity will cause it to dedicate massive amounts of energy to crawl because, again, it lacks a skeleton. It probably also will struggle to eat plants because cellulose is tough to dissolve with lysosomes without some sort of enzyme like cellulase to act as a catalyst. Its best strategy might actually be to grow smaller and live like a sort of mold on fruits and flowers, opportunistically eating bugs and rodents that happen to walk ontop of it. (In that sense, it would totally @#$% up our ecosystem and be a hazard to any humans who are dumb enough to go on a hike in the jungle.)
@mrdzin1209 Жыл бұрын
@@bellgrand Calvin originate from Mars, so there's no reason to say it can't survive on Earth because of gravity and whatnot. It destroyed ALL life on Mars which at some point must have some kind of vegetation. @@mrdzin1209 Mars gravity is roughly a third that of Earth's. Anyhow, the lack of evidence of any other sort of life plus the lack of specialization means Calvin probably competed against similar non-specialized life forms and wiped them out before they became specialized. So no plants, which had cells that specialized to be inedible. (Remember that the reason why we have oil today is because for millions of years, nothing could digest cellulose or lignin, so plants and trees wouldn't rot.)

The thing that annoyed me the most about this movie was how they kept going on about "quarantine protocol" but in reality, their quarantine was basically non-existent. If you were really dealing with potentially dangerous alien life you'd have the pod it was in completely disconnected from the rest of the station, It wouldn't even have a door a window. Everything would be remotely controlled and there would be no way for anything to get in or out. You'd also likely want some kind of automatic kill switch that would flood the pod with radiation to kill anything inside and fail-safe that would eject the pod into a solar orbit as a last resort. But I do understand that with all that there wouldn't have been a movie. I just wish they had tried harder to make it seem like they really had a good plan set up.

Okay, but without a door or a window, how would they even have gotten the potentially dangerous alien inside? And if the pod was completely disconnected from the stations, how would they keep it from floating off into space? Again, if the pod is disconnected, how would they eject it? And remotely controlling everything simply isn't feasible because it would be very difficult to control the more precise procedures. Radiation seems like gross overkill, not to mention the fact that they know nothing about the alien life so they have no idea how radiation will affect it. But this time, Hugh has the wherewithal to be gentle with the creature and actually calm it down. And then everything goes smoothly from there. Then Calvin's arrival to Earth can be a peaceful and happy ending, with a sequel potentially having the premise of Calvin trying to live among humans. Yadda yadda I went on too long.

In terms of being exposed to vacuum, there is a big difference between the extremely hostile environment of space and an environment barren of resources or non-optimal for growth. The environment in the lab changed BUT it was still obviously habitable by the organism, it decided to hibernate to conserve resources and wait for better conditions. Meanwhile a vacuum is an incredibly hostile environment, extremely cold, with high pressure differentials applying extreme forces to the cells, and just generally inhabitable for any form of life as we know it. The fact that Calvin was so desperate to get back inside the ship shows that it didn't find the environment habitable. As to changing the air pressure, if I remember correctly they did do so, but it remained dormant. Essentially Hugh was incredibly impatient and couldn't wait to experiment with different conditions. I would imagine with the damage from reentry combined with their apparent general lack of education on the matter, no, they didn't look they simply opened it. Plus, they might not be able to tell what it is from the outside anyway, and humanity is rather known for curiosity getting us into dire straits.

@kerianhalcyon27693 жыл бұрын
The plot of Life presents the theory that Calvin caused the extinction of the Mars, honestly I think that Mars's extinction is what led to Calvin. If supercells are presumably common on Mars (considering just how advanced Calvin is), then it's fair to assume that the biosphere on Mars was composed of said supercells and that they were pretty normal. However, Calvin is still fairly alive and functional by the time the crew of the ISS gets the sample with him in it. That implies that he's like a tardigrade in that he can survive fairly horrid conditions that will destroy other life, but even tardigrades aren't infallible. There's a time limit before they run out and die. That same logic ought to be applicable to Calvin. What I personally think is that Calvin is an organism that's evolved at the end stages of life on Mars, and has managed to survive due to the likely very few, very isolated patches of locations that can allow extremophile life to exist on said planet - water ice, pockets of air trapped underground in caves, that kind of thing. Obviously due to erosion and other issues on the surface those locations do eventually get exposed, forcing life forms like Calvin to have to go into hibernation mode in a last-ditch attempt to survive. After all, Calvin is not only resistant to a lot of problems when he is encountered aboard the ISS - these are also traits that make him decently capable of resisting death on Mars. Lack of oxygen, fluctuating temperature changes of high extremes, sudden changes in pressure, all of these would be present on Mars even today. I'd imagine Calvin would eventually have a max capacity to him before he ultimately stops growing and would probably wind up living a comfy life as a superpredator in some deep ocean or forgotten crevice somewhere on Earth and nobody would bat an eye, and he'd only be a real problem to the whole planet if his species can procreate asexually.
@asandax62 жыл бұрын
Fluctuating temperature changes can be used as a source of energy e.g capture heat when it's hot and slowly release when it's cold using the temperature gradient as a means to facilitate energy conversion. Like TEGs.

@HeadlessZombY3 жыл бұрын
honestly, thinking on it, Calvin having such thick cell walls would actually probably be an overall detriment compared to specialized cells. so much of the Mass of calvin is tied up in cell walls, even deep within his body. because of that, there is a case to be made that he shouldn't have been as strong as he was. there's just simple thermodynamic properties that can't be overlooked and so i don't think a cell that can do everything would be capable of competing with specialized cells. edit: it'd also be highly susceptible to a bacteriophage engineered to attack it and likely poisons, there's current research that says that bacteria that grow more anti-biotic resistant weaken their defenses against bacteriophages and vice versa. it can't be perfectly immune to either of these attacks as it must eat and therefor have a process for allowing material into a cell that could be exploited. it's unlikely to be able to defend against chemical attacks on it's DNA, etc. The only thing that I would consider a true threat would be if he could just release his cells airborne and still have them directed someway so that he could just start eating little bits of everything. Like imagine if we just laced arsenic over an area overtaken by calvin, if any atoms manage to get into cells they will just start shredding DNA up making the cell malfunction and die, if the cells try to get reabsorbed then the arsenic is passed on. it can't control cells that are malfunctioning and so can't quarantine except mechanically.
@EgorKaskader2 жыл бұрын
Also, each cell has to invest into everything at once - light-sensitive pigments, contracting complexes, digestive enzymes, and some way to process and pass information like a neuron - presumably purely chemically, as depolarisation mechanics would already be taken up by the muscle functions. This makes every one of these systems very inefficient compared to terminally specialised cells - each cell would be weaker than a smooth muscle cell, worse at digestion than an enterocyte (which also get help from external digestive enzymes, adding yet more efficiency), worse at perceiving light and forming signals than cones and neurons....

@@omegadeadpool4987 The usual illogical way of acting in a face of an alien threat. Not ejecting the lab section into deep space at the moment of contamination break, opening the hatch to the ship that was supposed to push out the infested station and so on.

@@Mate397 1. You are Assuming that they could just eject a section of the space station here. And two, they did take the decision to lock Calvin in the lab, it was just that he escaped from it. And even if they could release the lab off, that would require them to dismantle an entire Space Station for a single Organism(they didn't know how dangerous Calvin is when this happened) 2. I don't remember this one but if you are referring to the Chinese guy here, then he didn't know that the ship came there to push them out. He went there to go back to Earth And go on, is there more such logical inconsistencies which are justifiable if the audience use their own logic?

I always enjoyed the theory that this project was a salvaged waste of a potential Venom movie
