Thank you for an interesting interview. As an American Anglican I really appreciate Calvin's position on authority. It is really central to the discussion of gay marriage. I am committed as an American to a division between church and state. This is a protection for both religious freedom of choice and the democratic form of government. I have no problem with the right of any two people choosing to marry in a civil union, but religious marriage has a different meaning from civil marriage. Civil marriage is about legal rights and requirements of those who enter into it. The terms of religious marriage, its rights, restrictions, purposes and meanings, are defined by God and are clearly stated in the scriptures, customs, and traditions of that particular religion. Any confusion between the two results in weakening of the power of both the religious and democratic principles. This type of confusion causes debate of many topics. For instance in the US there is now a question over who is a woman and who is a man by phenotype or genotype based on individual choice ever since same-sex marriage has become both legal and embraced by some religions.

Then there's the Shroud of Turin. As the overwhelming consensus of the leading experts agrees, Jesus's crucifixion and Resurrection in a burst of radiation and light, fits the known scientific facts about the Shroud. So they can separate, but must remain as they are and not remarry. My own heterosexual parents should not have been married in church. How many other people ought not to be married in church? Are not ALL men and women who marry in church supposed to be virgins? I love the highly selective way that clerics like Calvin Robinson apply their 'scriptural' ethics. They think in terms of black and white, bad or good: but human beings are not like that. I'm an old homosexual Christian man who has shared forty years with a gentle atheist: but I think the Chu8rch Universal needs to put its own heterosexual rules and regulations in order first, before it pontificates on the lives of others.

There are divorced and remarried people in church, some of whom are committing adultery according to Christ; women already pregnant whilst having church weddings. @@LM-uu8hy It is precisely the issue of "what the bible teaches" (I would prefer to write, "what our scriptures teach") about just about EVERYTHING which lies at the heart of the Jewish, and Christian, faiths. What, for example, do our scriptures teach us about the young human being - Jesus of Nazareth - who is at the very heart of our faith: bearing in mind that our New Testament scriptures are all written in the light of post-resurrection appearances? Is it possible to recover the 'historic' person at all? Is anything to be gained by the exercise? I think there is: because (as I have written on numerous occasions, it was not the Second Person of the Holy Trinity who convinced ordnary people to stop what they were doing and follow him. It was a young male Jew, at a given point in Jewish 'salvation-history'. This is before we ask, "Of what forms of behaviour would Jesus approve, or diapprove?"

The church is one area where men who aren't attracted and don't marry women are accepted as a vocation even when it sometimes covers the fact that they are gay or, worse, paedophiles. I've no evidence that Robinson is gay but Christian gays are often very homophobic as a protection.

I think of truth in many different modalities: theological truth, philosophical truth, scientific truth, emotional truth, mathematical truth, self truth, etc. The wise person will seek truth in all its manifestations.
