A good video with some interesting points. For me I would look to rent to try out something expensive prior to purchase 1: To see if it does what it purports to 2: To make sure I do actually have a need for it 3: Rent it because you need it as you have covered in the film. Renting is an ideal short term solution to try out any new tech you might want, but then find if you buy that in fact it does not meet your needs or you just don't like it. Everything I buy I see as an investment and there is nothing I have that I do not use at some stage no matter what it is for. When I upgrade equipment I will then look to sell on the old unit or pass it down to the kids (young adults now) to make use of, but, if the need arises and I need something urgently for a shoot then renting is definitely an option to consider.

Love your content, Simeon. I’ve been to a few of you talks at BVPS is Dublin over the last few years and I always find them so helpful and inspiring. Especially since I’ve just set up my own production company after working as a freelancer for the last 2 years or so. Hope you get a chance to do some more of this content

Another great video! Love the idea for taking out the interest free loan and paying it off! I did that with my 70-200 when I found myself hiring it all the time!

Glad i found ur IG page, brought me here! Great insight and content! I'm at a crossroads of sorts, last year i got rid of both my c100 mk II's. I'm now contemplating between a 1DX MKii and C300 MKii... i mostly shoot film but also love the versatility to shoot stills.

What about charging the client upfront for renting out gear that’s needed for that specific job?

Really great video! You often talk about realistic stuff. That's cool. Question: IS THERE ANYTHING LIKE USELESS GEAR? I'll explain that. I acquired a few Sony lenses, which due to my lack of proper orientation at the time of purchase, have f4 as the largest aperture. Realizing I might need to shoot sometimes at night I recently acquired a Sony f1.8, 50mm. After using it for a week, I realized it is better for photography & not videography. Though It shoots beautiful videos, It continuously hunts for focus when things are in motion, & it's very noisy. So a few days ago, I bought the Sony Zeiss f1.8, 55mm which is excellent. As I don't intend to be a photographer in any way, it seems the 50mm is useless! Should I sell it (as second hand) or keep it?

Its probably better to sell it. Though if you have kept the packaging, you should be able to take the lens back!!! Send it back! It's less than 2 weeks.

I took away that, Buying will allow me to quickly pick up an do personal projects and fast turnaround pro gigs. Renting will keep the money in my pocket, until I 0start relying too much on it, then its too expensive.

A common misconception is that using a credit card is the right way to buy gear, let alone anything. But the reality is, you're in debt. You are now paying monthly on top of your overhead to pay for something you can't afford. Just because you can make the monthly payments doesn't mean you can "afford" something. You are using a credit card, or loan, because you can't afford something. This is a slippery slip that for some people who can handle money isn't an issue, but for others (like myself) can be detrimental. How many companies out there go out of business not because their business isn't doing well, but because they bit off more than they can chew in overhead costs? More than you think. I do agree with you in finding a balance in buying vs renting, but I don't agree with going into debt for gear. Save save save and by the time you have enough money, the next new thing will come out and you can afford it. Cheers! Thanks for the video :)

ROI Return "on" Investment not "of" because "of" implies the entire return where "on" implies a percentage estimation in finance. It was alright apart from that. Also between 6-8 months (or after each season) if you're renting gear that often then the financial costs of both options should be weighed up before the year end when addressing your finances.

SashaUnfiltered . I appreciate the correction, you are totally correct. I didn't realise, I said "of" thank you!!
