"Deadhead Chemistry" refers to LSD actually. "Deadhead" is what fans of the "Grateful Dead" are called... the Grateful Dead's tour was notorious for being one of the main routes that LSD took to circulate throughout the country. People who were DEEP into LSD over the 60s 70s and 80s were very close to the band and their basically non-stop tours. Also, the line "The blotter got right on top of me" also backs up the idea that he's talking about LSD... "Blotter" is the name for the paper that you buy LSD on. LSD is absorbed into a 10X10 "sheet" of perforated "tabs" that are easy to pull apart from each other, making 100 hits in a sheet... So 'ol homeboy is actually on LSD, Ecstacy, AND DMT... shit... if that combo DOESN'T have you seeing E-motherfucking-T, then your shit's weak, and you need a new dealer.

The DMT is yogi DMT I think that's the 5meo kind. But there was something else took an maoi so maybe it was that he made an ayahuasca thing or something. But what a fkn combo I took some acid and mdma was too intense feeling both peak at samr time i rather do those separately shrooms were fun to mix with mdma and I just like acid thr most now lol. But I hope the research chem versions don't suck as bad as thr ones for fkn shrooms cuz 4acodmt is fun till the come down tried it 2x hated it was fun for 4hrs then miserable 4hr come down is rough af feels like opiate wds. Anyway lsd is my fav I want to try DMT I don't have any dealers since I started getting my weed legally lol. Ffs

@steeeve77364 жыл бұрын
Herbie Shapiro you do realize that the reason they’re called deadheads is because they do acid? i mean they’re not called deadheads because they listen to grateful dead, but because it’s a psychedelic band. a deadhead was a person who does a lot of acid before it was a group of people that listen to grateful dead. the deadhead chemistry is the chemical being released into his brain from the acid, hence “the blotter”. blotter is a common form of acid, they drop acid onto a sheet of blotter paper which absorbs the acid. you place the blotter on your tongue for the acid to be absorbed.

Glad to see younger people getting into Tool. Just in time for the new album! The drumbeat I think you're referring to (starts during the solo and is then played 3 more times thru each totally separate part after the solo.) is mainly a 3:5 polyrhythm. Then Danny just has to complicate things by adding a 4/4 count as well...so you have a 3/4, 4/4, and 5/4 all being played at the same time by this madman. The Kick drum is 5/4, the snare is 3/4, then the weird high hat thingy he brings in is 4/4 (some may say it's also 3/4 but he accents the 1st of 4 notes, not the 3rd) The bass copies the polyrhythm and the guitar solo is actually played in 6/4...this song is a mathematical masterpiece, and I have no idea how they wrote it all out because they are literally playing in different time signatures multiple times throughout the song.
@CampSiteVlogs5 жыл бұрын
It actually starts toward the end of the vocal segment "Im I alive. Am I dead. Cant remember what they said. God damn shit the bed." But yeah man, Thank you for breaking this down the time signatures for me. Give me a better understanding of its complexity. I just love how that drum part works behind so many different guitar, bass and vocal parts. Its quite brilliant
@jimmyb26555 жыл бұрын
@@CampSiteVlogs oh yes, that is the root of the polyrythym in half time. That last little bit at the end has the guitar playing 11/4 while the drums and bass are doing 5/4...then he comes in with the glue that is that polyrythm to hold it all together and plays 6/4...6/4+5/4=11/4 before the song finally ends. Danny did a drum clinic in 2010 where he played this entire song for a small crows and went over a few of the odd parts in detail.

"From when the drums slow down" Fun fact, technically, Danny doesn't slow them down. He just plays different subdivisions of the initial snare roll at the same tempo and time signature. It sounds like he's slowing down and unlike me, he paid attention to math class and did the subdivision thingy. Either way, it's awesome!

He plays with his back straight fully focused, and with precession. It really neat to watch. you can tell he is classically trained. Oh and one more thing (actually five more things) that I didn't mention in my TL;DR diatribe down there... There are a few things and references that you didn't mention to your sister about the songs lyrics, so I thought I'd just point them out to you in case you didn't know them, cause I'm sure you'd like to know yourself. 1) the lyric, "I hope Uncle Martin didn't notice I pissed my fucking pants" Uncle Martin was actually the main character from an old TV show from the 60s called "My Favorite Martian" where basically this martian (who looks exactly like a human but has 2 metal antennae sticking out of his head, lol) ends up landing in LA and gets taken in by a dude and passed off as his uncle named "Uncle Martin"... (so basically the lyric is saying "I hope the alien didn't notice I pissed my fucking pants) lol (also, a little tidbit fact in case you're a Trekkie like me, but the guy who played "Uncle Martin" is the same actor who played "Boothby" the "Starfleet Academy", groundskeeper and wise old sage from the shows "Star Trek: The Next Generation", and "Star Trek: Voyager") 2) the lyric, "ya'll all sound like Peanuts' parents" That lyric is a reference to "Peanuts" as in the "Charlie Brown" comic... if you remember how adults sounded in the cartoon versions of that comic-strip... they all sounded like muffled trumped sounds that went "Wopwop Wopwompwaw Wop Wopwompwomp" or whatever... basically he's saying that he's SO FUCKING ZONKED out of his fucking HEAD that people trying to talk to him just isn't being interpreted by his head correctly... A glitch in his brain's circuitry... He can't understand human language any more... And this is something that can actually happen on a crazy-heavy trip... It has absolutely happened to me before, but you have to be PRETTY FUCKING FAR GONE to get to that point. But it DOES happen. 3) the lyric, "see the Dead ain't touring" That lyric is a reference to Grateful Dead (the second in the song... the first being "Its gotta be the Dead-Head Chemistry" which is actually a way of saying "LSD" because "dead-heads" were the name for the hardcore Grateful Dead fans (many of whom followed the band tour across the country) and the touring circuit was an infamous and a notorious route for LSD to spread across the country in the decades that The Dead's tour were happening) 4) also the "blotter got right on top of me" after the "dead-head chemistry" that line is also a direct reference to the narrator taking LSD that night as well as X and DMT... because "Blotter" (generally) specifically means LSD. (Blotter, being the absorbent, pre-perforated sheets of paper that the LSD is laid out into.)... (and I say "generally" because there ARE other psychedelics that can be put on blotters but they're all more obscure and weirder psychedelics that most people havent even heard of, such as DOI, DOB, NBOMe, even alprazolam (xanax) can come on blotters... but GENERALLY it is very specifically LSD that comes on blotters... and when someone is selling you some other research chemical psychedelic on blotter, 98% of the time, they're selling it AS LSD, just calling it "acid" because its a piece of paper and makes you trip, and they have no fucking idea what they're selling... So just a word from the wise about this stuff, if you EVER buy a "blotter" paper that's supposed to be LSD, and you TASTE... ANYTHING other than just tasteless paper (and specifically I'm referring to a very bitter or metallic kind of taste) then it is NOT LSD... it is one of these other research chemicals... most likely something like DOB.... And the assholes who KNOW that they're selling something other than acid and CALLING it acid are huge pieces of shit, because they have different effects from LSD and it can be VERY VERY dangerous to misrepresent a drug you're selling as something else (as a specific example, the come-up time on a psychedelic amphetamine like DOB is twice as long or even longer than LSD, instead of taking under an hour to kick in, it takes sometimes over 2 hours! So its actually QUITE common for people who are sold something like DOB as LSD to take a hit or two, and not feel it after an hour so they think they took a dud or that they're just incredibly weak... So of course they end up taking another hit or two!... and with DOB, the more you take, the LONGER it lasts... so if our hypothetical psychonaut just took 4 hits when they thought it was weak LSD... now they'll end up having an EXTREMELY HEAVY trip that will actually last OVER 24 fucking HOURS!!! 4 hits could last up to even 36 or more hours depending how much is on one hit!!!!... So to anyone reading this who takes or sells hallucinogens... KNOW WHAT YOU'RE TAKING AND WHAT YOU'RE SELLING.... and DO NOT!... I repeat DO NOT EVER misrepresent something you know ISN'T LSD as LSD... NBOMe is actually a drug that people have died from because it was sold as LSD!!!) 5)The lyric "Bob, help me!!!" Now this isn't something that is verified by the band or anything, but many Tool fans agree that saying "Bob" help me in plave of "God" help me, is referring to "Bob Dobbs", who is basically the "diety" character of the "Church of the Sub-Genius" religion, which is a sort of absurdist religion that is kind of a satire of actual mainstream religions... I'll let you just google "Church of Sub-Genius" yourself to learn more about them if you want (you should because its awesome AND hilarious)... But you might actually recognize their diety, "Bob Dobbs" as the 1950's advertising-esque head with a finely coiffed haircut and a great grin with a wooden pipe sticking out of it... here's a picture!: i.pinimg.com/736x/bf/b6/22/bfb6222e1fdf2941ba494a4550a7aa2d.jpg Anyway, that's all the tidbits on these lyrics. :D Enjoy the knowlege! :D

I agree with your "Goddamn, shit the bed" interpretation... that it's using the idiom that one "royally screwed up" something... BUUUT I ALSO think that it was meant to be taken literally as well... as in the character literally shit his bed in the hospital... or more accurately the other way around... That this dude was tripping so hard that in the hospital he ended up shitting himself, and at the same time using that figure of speech to say that he "screwed the pooch" on the whole "chosen one", message from above, thingy. lol. *Shrug... it could be that it was ONLY meant to be interpreted as "screwed up" the whole bring a message to your people... But I think its the whole imagery of how he's been laying in a hospital bed, and the "Sunkist and Sudafed, won't help the brain dead" part, and all that imagery that's basically painting a picture of this dude just completely ZONKED out of his gourd from all the drugs and craziness... I always just saw the line as like the FINAL embarrassing nail in the coffin of this ridiculous experience where he fucked it all it. Maybe it's just me, but I kind of assumed that most people saw it this way until I saw this video that JUST saw it as the figure of speech alone, and not a literal event of this fucked up dude just shitting the bed in the hospital.

If they're not touring or the very rare times they're actually in a studio together they're never together. By the way they talk sometimes especially Maynard they don't seem to particularly like each other they just know musically they created something special

You should show Rene and yourself if you’ve never heard of them some songs by The Cult also. They are a very good band. You don’t have to make reaction videos though just look at them because they will play right before Tool at the show

Chick nailed it ... It is funny ! Dude is tripping nuts and his friends dump him at the hospital . He is definitely having an experience just prob no ETs involved and it's totally comical how the aliens always pick the least credible or believable person instead of landing on the U.N. lawn . (After travelling countless light years , just to molest some hitchhiker before heading back home ) Yes , the abductee can only relate what they themselves already know but can't remember the monumental message or anything really helpful . Pretty sure Tool meant this very tongue in cheek , if not outright poking fun at the tin hat crowd . It is totally cool to see y'all young uns getting into it . Oh , just some dated FYI : Deadhead chemistry refers to LSD ..... wherever the Grateful Dead would go the Deadheads, and the killer acid would follow ,and he doesn't think the blotter he dropped would be good enough to explain it all , "cause the Dead ain't touring" . Uncle Martin was the main character in a kooky 60's show "My Favorite Martian" . My take on the tune anyway.....and like all songs , whatever meaning gives you the most enjoyment of a song then that is the correct meaning .

I think you missed a big part of this story, It don't matter how straight or high he was, the message was too powerful for his human mind to handle, and that's why he's out of his head and strapped to a bed. With his feet cold and eyes red. 😵

Also, you basically talk about this song's LITERAL interpretation... That it's basically just this story of this dude's crazy night, and that he actually did just happen to get abducted and told that he was the "chosen one" and given a message to relay, but he forgot it in his drug-fueled stupor... That you took it completely literally... very straight-forwardly... like just the story on the surface is all there is to this song. And I was surprised by this seeing as how you're an obvious Tool fanatic like me, and that you've been doing a decent job at explaining the songs' meanings to your sister as far as I can see from what videos I've viewed... But basically, what I think this song REALLY is (besides this crazy story that's just fun and entertaining to listen to), is a cautionary tale about the more dangerous side of psychedelics... It's basically the other side of the coin to Third Eye... Where Third Eye expounds on the awe and wonder and transformative, even spiritual, experiences that one can go through with the right set and setting and a healthy dose of a psychedelic... THIS song is about the other side of the coin... It's about how psychedelics, when it's NOT taken in the proper set and setting, can be harmful and detrimental to one's psyche and mental health... sometimes its just temporary like the man in this song... sometimes it can be more permanent, specifically (and really only) in the individual already had a predisposition toward schizophrenia or some other mental health issue that can cause one to go into delusional or paranoid states... and the individual would most likely have gone down that road anyway, but the psychedelics (and usually its from misuse and/or over-use, and not just one experience) basically triggers one's schizophrenia early. I've seen it happen to someone I knew personally. But basically this song is about someone who took WAY too much shit on one fateful night... a combination of LSD, Ecstacy, and DMT is specifically cited, though the narrator casually mentions what he's on, sometimes even indirectly, like with LSD and the line "the dead-head chemistry, the blotter got right on top of me", and not lists them out specifically, so he could potentially be on even more drugs... In fact, I'll pretty much assume we can add marijuana to that list... AAAAnyway... He basically gets into this paranoid-delusional state that can be common on such a heavy dosage... especially when combining multiple hallucinogens, and THEN DMT on top of that!!! It seems like you haven't tried DMT yourself, or maybe you just don't want to admit it in front of your little sister, lol... but basically DMT on TOP of fucking candy-flipping (Acid and X) is just a crazy fucking ordeal... basically time will seem to stop on you and you'll pretty much think you've died, or have never been alive to begin with, or who knows what... DEFINITELY, an "abduction" experience would be EXTREMELY likely to happen, because its VERY VERY VERY common for psychonauts to come into contact with "entities" from the "DMT realm"... entities that MANY MANY people are sure are ACTUAL, legit, non-human consciousnesses that are able to contact the user through the DMT-state. And basically, the narrator has an INCREDIBLY REAL delusion that he is abducted by aliens and goes through this crazy experience and actually believes it to be 100% real and true when in actuality, he's having paranoid-delusions, and even delusions of grandeur when you consider the whole "chosen one" part... And that is another VERY VERY VERY common delusional state that people encounter on an extremely heavy psychedelic experience... the idea that they have been related some crazy-deep revolutionary conception of the universe and how it works... or the reason for existence, or life, or reality... on the more extreme end of this whole delusional motif, you even have messiah delusions... even specifically people who REALLY BELIEVE that they are JESUS!!!... Charles Manson and his "Family" had a group-delusion of this... they took WAY WAY WAY too much LSD and were WAY WAY WAY to open to this madman's delusions because he brought them to this bohemian sort of free-life commune and was basically providing them with all these drugs... He ACTUALLY convinced them beyond a shadow of a doubt that he was the second coming of Jesus or the new Messiah or whatever... and well... we all know the rest of that story. Also, even on smaller doses, and without the whole "delusion" aspect happening, it's basically ubiquitous to the psychedelic experience that one will have these epiphanies, these realizations about life and reality... and things will just CLICK... or just seem so obvious... just make SO much sense to you at the time... and things that you'll say to yourself "I can't forget this!!! This is too important!!!" or even "How could I forget something like this??!! It makes so much sense!! How did I not grasp this earlier??!!" And you'll just grasp reality like you have never had before in your entire life!... And theeeennnn... you come down... and its almost impossible to pin down what had seemed SO fucking CLEAR before... And it slips away from you, VERY much like a dream slips away from you when you wake up. Its actually a VERY VERY VERY similar feeling to trying to remember a dream that you only have one tiny image or event... or even just a FEELING.. but that's it... not enough to actually remember the dream... That is VERY much like how it feels AFTER a psychedelic experience, trying to look back on it and remember it. And that's where the whole "I can't remember what he said" and "I forgot my pen" part of the song comes from... what that feeling of his experience comes from. Anyway, I think this song is more-or-less retelling this as a cautionary tale... that his experience WASN'T actually real... that he DIDN'T actually get abducted, and he WASN'T actually the chosen one... He just went through temporary insanity, and he's still in his delusion while he's relaying his experience, and he's 100% SURE that this experience was ACTUALLY REAL... that he WAS fucking abducted by aliens without a doubt... and so on, and so forth... BUUUUT... if he were to relay it again in about a week's time, he'd probably come to terms with the fact that it was all a hallucination and a delusion of grandeur... That he WASN'T abducted by aliens, and that he ISN'T the chosen one. lol... But hey... that's my interpretation...If you wanna take it on its surface level and believe that its all a true story (or portrayed as such) or whatever... that's all good. You be you... I just thought that you and your sister would like to think about this interpretation of the song. Peace, and keep up the good work of passing down your love of the best fucking band in history to your little sister... And ESPECIALLY good on you for fucking buying your little sister a fucking TICKET to see fucking TOOL LIVE!!!! MAN OH MAN!!! Not only do I think that this show will just MELT her fragile little MIND!!! (and I 100% mean that in a good way) but I think that in the future that she'll REALLY appreciate that you did this for her... especially since they probably have just another 5 or so more years of touring left in them... They're getting old... And I assume you've already been to a TOOL show, judging by your level of fanaticism and your age... But if this is your first TOOL show... well, you're BOTH in for a fucking TREAT!!!! Also, DON'T show her any live concert footage of them before the show!!! For one, seeing a video of them live compared to ACTUALLY seeing them live... well, it's like a fucking gnat compared to one of the bugs off of Starship Troopers.. orrr... something like that... lol... you can't even compare the two is what I'm really getting at... And coming from someone who has seen them 10 fucking times since 2001... well... Its gonna be like no other concert she's been to. And later when she becomes a legit full-on Tool fan and love every song off of every album just like all Tool fans, she's REALLY going to appreciate you doing all this for her and getting her into the band... and ESPECIALLY for taking her to a FUCKING TOOL CONCERT!!!! You are a righteous dude!

Thank you for taking the time to comment ALL OF THIS lol. it was a lot but I actually read it all. But do you know who Billy Manspeaker is? Well, he is who this song was inspired by and I have spoken with him about his experience. Obviously Billy knows he isnt the "chosen one" and what not. And he is likely never to go that far and deep again. lol he learned a lot from that experience.

The "shit the bed part" to me sounds like drug side effect kicking , as in the beginning he's mixing all sorts of drugs and its taken in a very literal sense. From my understanding , with drugs like Ayahuasca for example , the act of taking a shit while experiencing can be a side effect or even part of the "ritual" to experience within your hallucinations.

HellFox see I had even a different take, and that at this point he is quite literally strapped down to the bed he’s shitting in because he’s now been deemed insane by the doctor and he’s strapped down in an asylum type deal.
