I love Opeth, but when I first heard them I had similar repulsion towards the growling parts, I'm sure most of the Opeth fans had. You have to let the growls grow on you over time. I think this is a good, honest reaction. You can't expect them to fully apreciate this masterpiece as their introduction to Opeth.

Definitely needs multiple listens, it was the first song I listened to by Opeth. It took me a few listens to really like and appreciate the song. Now I would say it is my favorite progressive metal song. The band is actually a 5 piece 2 guitars, bass, drums, and if you listen closely you can hear the keyboard player who also does some backing vocals. The guy who does the vocals, Mikael Akerfeldt, also plays guitar. If you have free time to listen to the song again I would recommend watching it live at the roundhouse and/or at red rocks. If I would suggest another song, it would be bleak, which has more of a typical song structure.

One way to think of the deep growls and screams is to think of his voice as an instrument. Listen to the tone of the music and the tone of his voice. Nah screaming is something people do when they are afraid and screaming for help. It sounds nothing like this. This is growling. It is what an angry person or a stalking predator does. Screaming is what the prey does. ;)
@futurewavecs5 жыл бұрын
@kimi Yeah. I definitely know there is screaming. It comes in many forms and has actually existed in metal longer than the growling technique. There are some vocalists that intermix growls and screams. Though in the old days some of what Judas Priest does, AC/DC and others would be called screaming. Is it? I've also heard older bands that the vocal style was more what I'd classify as screaming. Though some stuff people might call screaming is just growling at a different pitch. You definitely vocally approach screaming very different from growling.

A death metal growl is a very guttural noise that results from pushing air through a set of "fake" vocal chords by using the diaphragm (belly muscles). It's basically a controlled version of the sort of grunting sounds you make when you try to push out a turd.

Yeah these lyrics are very existential, coming from the perspective of questioning life and everything around it. The guy had just become a father during the writing/recording which could be why these themes came to mind. He also presented this song as 'a piece of information' during a few tours, so i'd say it's pretty much up for grabs what one choose to take from it. There's a lot of metaphores going on. For songs with a lot more tasteful/emotional growls check out Moonlapse vertigo or Drapery falls. Cheers!
@johnmclellan22575 жыл бұрын
A growl is a very different type of vocal technique. It's typically lower and more guttural, like what Mikael does on this track. Screaming ranges from a roar to a full blown shriek that you'd hear on a black metal song or melodic death metal song
