I’m 90kg, 69 years old and doing about 80 miles a week on my old MTB in generally hilly terrain. I’ve got a Giant Contend AR1 coming and the only thing that worries me is that the lowest ratio is about 25% higher in terms of distance per pedal stroke than my MTB. The AR1 is much lighter though. I guess I’m about to find out…

Good video, I’m 88kg down from 97kg and I can struggle up climbs. Loved the “ignore the car behind you” how many times do I have to say this to myself. Great effort and honesty about the point in the morning, when you’re first awake and not wanting to go and struggle.

Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it. I try not to hide my thoughts as I’m sure I’m not the only one to experience these thoughts out on the bike. Btw, great effort dropping down to 88kg from 97kg. 🚴♂️💪🔥

It’s a skill, I’m still trying to get better at. I recall all the other difficult climbs or moments I’ve come through on the bike and remind myself about them as I’m struggling in the latest moment. The more moments you’ve suffered and came through, the more evidence you have in your head to keep going. It just takes time.

Nicely done. I run a compact front but 32 on the cassette. Keep think a 34 might help me. I’m lucky at being around 60kg. So that helps. I’m OK on the hills, but at 67 not quite pushing out the numbers that I use too. 😅
@andrewon2wheels7 ай бұрын
Fair play still hitting the hills at 67!! Hope I’m still like you at 67, spinning up the hills and mountains! A big cassette will help. No doubt. Highly recommend go bigger!

Good vid and great to see someone taking on climbs thats not 9 stone and averaging 7w/kg haha.... in relation to being 90kg how bike fit are you? and how much does that help as opposed to weight?
@andrewon2wheels7 ай бұрын
Thanks mate. Glad you enjoyed it. I’m fairly fit but not like outrageously fit. I have an FTP of 280w and a body fat percentage of 18.5%. Resting heart rate of 49bpm. The thing which helps me a lot, which more amateur cyclists should do I believe, is I have extremely easy gearing on my road bike. I have a GRX crank set on the front. 46-30t. And with a mech extender I’ve been able to fit a 11-42t cassette on the back. Which means I can access these super hard climbs as I can turn the pedals. Still have to put out a lot of power still.

Hi Andrew great videos...im over 90kg and would struggle up those so well done, keep it up!! If you don't mind me asking- what size is the rear cassette? Thanks
@andrewon2wheels8 ай бұрын
My gearing is my number 1 tip to anyone! I have GRX crankset on the front. 46-30t. And with a hanger extender I have an 11-42 on the back. Still have to push a lot of watts to move up the hills but now it’s manageable. Transformed my climbing that I can now get up crazy steep climbs! We are not pro who weigh 60kg with an FTP of 400. So I don’t understand why so many cyclists have the same gear ratios as the pros.
@AVFTSCycling7 ай бұрын
@@andrewon2wheels Totally agree. My road bike came with a 36 front and 34 rear as standard, now swapped to 34/40. It's the fault of the bike manufacturers catering to the niche people at the upper levels of cycling
@andrewon2wheels7 ай бұрын
@@AVFTSCycling absolutely agree. There should be sizing for the average Joe and pro sizing gears. No we use what the pros weight. We deal with 2-4watts per a kg. Where they’re something daft like 6+ watts per a kilo. Makes no sense.

In my experience it's so hard for my knee...i had to stop n continue with walked
@andrewon2wheels19 күн бұрын
If that’s the case. I’d highly recommend getting a MUCH bigger cassette on the back. My local bike mechanic used a hanger extender which allowed him to go from a max 11-34 cassette on the back to a massive 11-42 cassette. If you then pair it with a shimano grx 46-30 crank set, giving you an easier gear of 30-42, your knees will take far less of a beating!
