Interesting video as I had been thinking of trying this out. I have bone on bone knee problems, but at 71 years am reluctant to have knee replacements. I'd rather try and manage the situation and cope with it, Part of this has involved walking backwards for around 15 minutes each day. I do this at the gym which has a large space available without any obstacles. So far so good. I seem to be able to walk a little further without becoming exhausted, and definitely have less knee pain when walking. Its early days yet, but am far more aware of my glutes when walking than previously.

Hi Sir, I recently got my knee injured like 10 days ago, it popped and i felt unstable during that time. I got my mri done and the doc says i will be need surgery. Please suggest if i need surgery or what can i do to heal ? I am very scared ;( The impression shows IMPRESSION: 1. High-grade mid substance ACL tear. 2. Grade 1 sprain of the fibulocollateral ligament. 3. Posterior, medial meniscocapsular sprain. 4. Tibial plateau bone marrow contusions. 5. Small joint effusion.

Doctor: what counsel would you have for Jean Doe without knee problems who walks stairs at home for exercise, up the flight normally then down in reverse (no turning around at top or bottom of the staircase: straight forward, straight back)? Is this a recipe for imbalance?

I did what you said in a different vidio. The one you say to turn my foot to the side a bit. Like duck walk. It showed a difference the first time. I have a question. I haven't had to use steps in 14 years. So now I have a house with stairs, steap steps. My daughter is afraid I'll fall. I'm 76. I thought if I use the steps I can rebuild my knee muscles. She says get a stair lift. What do you think?

Tried this and it feels good but it feels even better when doing it in a hill instead of stairs. More intense on the muscles but easy on the joints.

Thank you so much. Do you have any advise for walking down steep hills? Since carrying out your suggested excercises, the pain in my knees have greatly improved. I do have crunching noises when I walk, any advise on how to reduce this please? Most grateful for your wonderful videos, which do genuinely help those who do not wish to have replacements, including myself. With warmest greetings, from the UK 🇬🇧 🙂

It looks like a side benefit of turning the knees to the side is that it lets you also put more of the foot, especially the heel, onto each step. I have, when desperate, gone down some stairs backwards very slowly. I have also gone up and down stairs sideways when there was only one railing within reach, so I could put both hands on the railing. I find when my knees are acting up if I must go on the stairs getting both hands onto railings is better than just one hand on a railing and one hand on a cane. When following a campus tour guide around with my daughter and husband I have also stopped on a landing midway on flights of stairs and waved everybody else past me, explaining that I was going to have to go very slowly. (Sometimes my knees were perfectly fine until something twinged halfway up the stairs.) It turns out campus tour groups are rather fond of stairs and tend to avoid elevators.
