Throw icebeam, psychic, and surf on it, and back it up with a gen one amnesia - this thing will take a hit, then retaliate with a one shot every time. Thunder wave is also there for any fight where a little luck may be required. Slowpoke on the other hand has poor bulk and poor special, which strongly hampers it's great movepool. Without some amnesia play slowpoke will be forced to be a physical attacker. Amnesia play won't be worth the hits it's going to take. Worst, at level 100 slowpoke won't be outspeeding anything, even if paralyzed. Slowbro won't be a challenge, slowpoke is perfect

Funnily enough? Onix at level 5 (For Little cup purposes in Pokemon Stadium 2) has a base stat speed of anywhere between 10-13 which actually makes it the 3rd fastest pokemon at that level only being outdone by Scyther, and tied with Voltorb lmao I can't tell you how having that Onix saved me against the final round.

It's surprisingly underwhelming how low Onix's health is, despite being one of the heaviest if not the heaviest Pokémon in Kanto. It deceives any new player into thinking that it's a tanky Pokémon.

Rock types in general are surprisingly squishy once you get past their defense stat. It helps to imagine Defense as "how hard do you need to hit for it to hurt", and HP as "how badly can it be hurt before it goes down"; Snorlax has no particular defenses, so it doesn't take much to damage it, but it can take a lot of punishment before it goes down. Onix, on the other hand, is essentially a boulder. It's tough to do much to actually damage it, (unless you get clever), but if you hit a fault line in the rock the entire thing splits in half.

It's worth comparing Rock type to Ice type, for a comparable "tanky" element, which will illustrate why Lorelei caused such a huge problem. Rock types have medium-to-low HP and Special defense, bolstered by high physical defense and strong attacks. Ice, on the other hand, is much more well rounded - not quite as much attack or defense, but more HP and special defense. Sounds like they shouldn't be able to do much against our boy Onix, then, right? Except defense is used purely as a divisor for the opponent's attack stat. This means that you hit diminishing returns real quick once you get above a critical value; that extra 20 defense doesn't do as much as the 100+ extra HP, especially since ice types can completely ignore it with special attacking moves, while rock types have no such luck - both physical and special attacks are hitting basically the same defensive values and solid HP.

Two years late, but two inaccuracies I wanna correct. Brock’s Onix does in fact have Bind in Fire Red and Leaf Grean. Gen 3 sturdy doesn’t only work for moves like fissure. It’s description says it neglects one-hit KOs, which it does. As long as you have full health before the attack you’ll hang on with the 1hp

I just did a HeartGold run with a Spinarak and at Level 100 I had to rely on Attract and Swagger to beat Lance and it was super hard. I finally won by killing his last Dragonite while I was at 24 HP and Paralyzed. I feel that Lorelei fight was your equivalent struggle.

I just recently discovered your channel and really got into binge-watching your videos. You know what I really like about them, despite them becoming a little monotone after a while because of the running gags and the simple concept? You're funny and likeable. One can tell that you're just having fun doing this; you sound modest and just really happy that people watch your stuff. Hey everyone Mah Dry Bread Here Pokemon emerald with only phanpy was surprisingly simple so let’s get back into the hard one. In this video where going to figure out if I can beat Pokémon Fire Red with only onix. Onix is one of my favourite Pokémon but has comparable stats to a first form starter it’s got a some good moves though. But I’m especially worried about Bruno. This is how I envision the video will start.

When you were still getting one-hit KO'd at lvl 100, my first thought was 'you'll have to reallocate you EVs out of useless stats'... then I remembered the EV berries don't exist in FR/LG and you'd have to trade over to Emerald for the berries =_= Also, I think it's safe to say the fight against Lorelei really slowblow'd~
