Zubat is surprisingly good for a basic pokemon that has a stage 2

(Warning, lots of numbers below) Regarding the low SpAtk of Pikachu being because of it being a bad pikachu... Yes. The Sp.Atk values that a regular nature Pikachu can have at lvl 100 are between 105 (with 0 EV's and an 0 IV in Sp.Atk) and 199 (with maxed EV's and an 31 IV in Sp.Atk). The Sp.Atk being 112 means that, at the very best (and most likely) the IV was 7 out of 31. Having to grind in the early game probably meant you barely had any EV's, with all the rats, bugs and birds not giving Sp.Atk EV's (mostly Speed and HP, of which the former was nearly at the maximum possible value, it being 261 out of a range of 185-279, meaning it had at worst an IV of 13, most likely higher if the speed EV's weren't maxed). Yeah, this Pikachu made it even more horrible than it needed to be. Interesting how Pokémon that need more grinding to beat for example Onix usually have very low Sp.Atk and very high speed. Of the available Pokémon to grind against, Rattata, Pidgey, Weedle, Spearow and Pikachu (2!) give Speed EV's, Caterpie gives HP EV's, Mankey gives Attack EV's and Kakuna and Metapod both give 2 Defense EV's. This means that you'll very often end up very weak on the special side. To completely show this (as I'm taking way too long writing up this comment anyways), let's compare ALL of Pikachu's stats to it's possible ranges (taken from the DPP Pokédex on Serebii): HP: 229, compared to a possible 180-274 Atk: 155, compared to a possible 115-209 Def: 109, compared to a possible 65-159 SAtk: 121, compared to a possible 105-199 SDef: 102, compared to a possible 85-179 Speed: 261, compared to a possible 203-306 We can see that the SpAtk and SpDef are very low, taking into account both IVs and EVs can increase stats, and HP, Atk, Def and Speed being average to high (since at most 2 stats can be maxed out, these are quite decent values). Definitely makes (at least in FRLG) special attackers that can't beat Brock hell. It'd be interesting to check if other generations have similar problems, but I doubt any have it as bad as in Kanto. The other regions all have either a bigger selection of grind-material, or don't have a huge roadblock before getting a bigger selection of grind-material. By the way, I wonder... What fossil will MDB pick next? Maybe we should all collectively drop our guesses in the comments. I'm going with the Claw Fossil.

I really don't mind when you use double team, it's a fair strategy. My thing about it is just when it's used every run, at that point it feels more like a comfort zone. I think using it throughout this run, though, was fine! Clearly it was absolutely needed and yeah, Pikachu learns it in its move set early on!

As some already said, Guts is very strong and abusing it makes several fights LEAGUES easier than they would be otherwise. I'm actually in the middle of my personal Taillow only Emerald challenge: For example, after maxing out my attack and speed by ev training on Poochyenas and Taillows/Abras in Route 116, I got past Roxanne under level 30, entering the fight while being paralyzed off a Shroomish's Effect Spore and spamming double team.

Fun fact: hindering nature, 0 Sp.Atk EVs and IVs results in.... 94 Sp.Atk so that 121 is really close to minimum. Same thing with attack, too. Range is 103-229, so 155 is not great either. It's really bulky for a pikachu though. I was wondering how he tanked so much, but this pikachu is fat.

I actually disagree with this because it doesn't answer the actual question. Like, if the only reason the run wasn't winnable was because the pokemon had hot garbage for IV's that would be pretty lame. And there's also a very real possibility that the garbage IV's are the cause for Double Team being absolutely necessary. And then it's just a lottery simulator. All the same, I don't think there's any reason it's NECESSARY to do that. I just think it harms the ability to appropriately answer the question and makes less interesting strategies more likely to be necessary.

@@forgiveman Considering how you battle so many Pokémon before you get the Macho Brace, the EVs will likely be already maxed out. So in order to max out a stat, you'd spend hours getting 1 EV per battle, which is boring. He probably resets for IVs/Natures in the background.

Pokémon challenge: Pokemon Emerald with mostly first form Fish Pokemon Exceptions: Relicanth and Luvdisc. Relicanth and Luvdisc have only one Form and are not too strong for my opinion you could use Luvdisc as a starter because the first you would get is Magikarp and you already did a Magikarp challenge A list of Fish Pokemon: Magikarp,Goldeen,Carvanha,Barboach,Feebas,Relicanth,Chinchou,Luvdisc If i forget any let me know

great vid, as per usual! mic sounds great, you sounded a slight bit constipated in the beginning but that probably wasn't mic-related. Stoked for the next vid! and, for risk of being the 1 millionth person to say it or you mentioning it later on in the fight, but wouldn't Hidden Power have been an option? HP Ice, Water, Psychic or Ground would have made some fights way, way easier, right?

Loved the run a lot, even though there were some things that could have gone way better. As for the emerald run, perhaps you could get 1) lairon from victory road, as it evolves instantly and comes with iron tail, 2) a high level tentacool when you get surf, because it comes with bubblebeam and can help with many battles like tate and liza and maxie, 3) magneton comes with spark and has a great defensive typing 4) Chincou from underwater comes with both spark and bubblebeam, so 2 great stab options 5) Whiscash comes with earthquake if you fish for a barboach at level 31 and has an excelent typing. I wish this list of options is helpful. Love your channel and i cant wait for next sunday
