Do you need to use the proper coolant in your car? You probably need to follow the the manufacturer recommendation. Using the wrong coolant can cause several issues with the coolant system. One other thing to consider is warranty for parts.

For those who are uncertain, using a Coolant like Prestone Extended Life Universal will satisfy most of your needs and without any issues. The Colour of a Coolant is only determined by the Dye that a Manufacturer uses to determine one formulation from another...and that can vary from one manufacturer to another. (ie) Toyota Extended Life Coolant (Red) is comparable to Zerex Asian (Pink) or OEM (Pink) are essentially the same...both are p-HOAT Formulated Coolants and compatible!

I bought a used 03 Corolla wth green coolant 175 k miles, it has green coolant not red. Did coolant service every 30,000 miles using Autozone 50/50 antifreeze. Right now it has 236,000 miles on it . Just saw leaking under recently and replaced the waterpump. Everything is fine now.

I took my 18 GTI to one of the big store auto service stores and they weren't sure if they were using the right coolant. As i watched them , they poured some non G13 coolant (peak violet 50/50) in the car, and started the ignition to see how it would react. Upon seeing that the car wouldnt show any negative signs they continued to pour the whole bottle. This raises a concern to me for warranty issues as you mentioned.

For the high performance/turbo guys out there you should really investigate the EVANS Waterless coolant. The change over is a bit tedious (must get ALL the water base stuff out), but once done you are all set......for the lifetime of your system.

VW's that spec G11 can use the traditional green coolant because they are both inorganic and have basically the same corrosion inhibitor type. Older VW's that spec G11, can use modern OAT G12++ or G13 coolants too, these are in reality kind of HOAT coolants because they use organic inhibitors but also inorganic Silicates. Silicates are needed to protect copper and brass, which is found in older radiators and heater cores, G12 and G12+ are not the best idea if you have an older car as they contain no Silicates and you run the risk of corroding the copper / brass in the heater core. The Silicates in G12++ and G13 also provide better cast iron and aluminium protection than G12 and G12+ did.... G12++ and G13 are really designed to be entirely backwards compatible. Hope this makes sense.

I have never used any manufacturers brand of coolant or fluid / oil and have never had an issue. As long as the label says that it's compatible, then you're good to go. You can even mix different color coolants, most brands like Peak, Prestone, Autozone, it says right on the back label that you can mix with any color.

Another one that forgets OAT coolant must not be mixed with standard antocorrosives (unless stated as compatible). OAT antifreeze generally called DEX COOL. Mixing generally causes gelling.

I know it didn’t leave the factory with dex cool but after a failed oil change (they left the cap off and the engine ran dry) GM replaces the engine and coolant. It’s time to change again and yes five years had gone! I want to flush that dex cool crap and go back to the Toyota fluids but paranoid as fuck. Will a flush even remove all the old fluid or dex cool? Will it be more dangerous to flush and fill with the (in my eyes) the correct Toyota formula? Or stay with dex coolant now it’s been switched?

A simple understanding of distilled water & deionized water: When it comes to distilled water vs. deionized water, both are very pure. In each case, however, the purity of the water before it goes through the water treatment makes a difference. The deionization process, for example, only removes ions - charged non-organic particles - from the water. The water should be filtered first to remove organic material, and additional filtering with a reverse osmosis (RO) system will remove a significant number of additional contaminants. This leaves only a small amount of ionized minerals for the DI system to remove.Water distillation, on the other hand, can remove more impurities than just ions. This process removes nearly all minerals, many chemicals, and most bacteria. That doesn't mean that it removes everything, however, especially if the water contains volatile organics and certain other contaminants. These impurities will evaporate and stay in the distilled water. As with deionized water, pre-treatment filtering is an important step. really it depends on where the source comes from. i don think using both is an issue. hope it helps clearup some ??? with car owners and the youtube community.

So, my elderly parents had the coolant on their 2002 TDI Beetle changed about 4000 miles (1.5 years) ago. Although assured by the shop (a national chain) that they were using the right coolant, they put in the green stuff. Recently P0128 coolant code came up. On the one hand, I know I could do a coolant flush and change the sensor myself, if it were just a regular flush. But I have to get all the green stuff out of the system and heater core, because mixing the different coolants is bad. I'm not a mechanic, although I can do small easy stuff. Is it reasonable for me to think that I can can run several flushes of distilled water through it to clean it out, then put in the correct coolant, or should I take it to the VW guy and pay him (and then attempt to get the chain store to pay for their carelessness)? This is a car I want to drive for many years.

One thing to consider with older cars (~90's and earlier) is the use of cast iron / copper / brass components. There is some evidence that OAT inhibitors are not good where these materials are used and you should stick with a traditional IAT type of coolant. If a heater matrix goes they can be a right pain to change out!

On my Audi A4 B5 2001 that has always been running genuine VW coolant, I had a bat coolant temperature sensor and changed it but in my workshop we was just out of the right stuff so I had to fill up with Peak Yellow long life (They say you can mix with all of them) then just some days after the temps started going to red and up to 110 degrees Celsius. And i shortly found out that the coolant started laying deposits everywhere and i had tho flush it 3 times with chemical acid cleaner and change the thermostat and radiator because they where gunk ed up. VW Coolant is the best for sale anyways, I work as a full time mechanic and when people ask if they can mix it is always NO on Vag cars If you don't have the right available, fill pure water and drain and fill up with coolant soon. NEVER use anything else unless flushing out all of the old coolant

I don't know what kind of coolant you guys use, but here in norway we mainly have some blue stuff, and some red stuff. (G11 and G12) there are some mix with all alternatives but thats more expensive. Its critical to NOT mix G11 (blue, probably what the 91 gti had in it new) with G12 (witch is better for the aluminum head of a 91 gti). The general recommandation is to either to a serious flush, fill the whole system with water and drain a couple times before filing G12 coolant. If you can't be bothered to do that just stick with whatevers in it..

Uggg., the short answer No!!., Reason is because the gaskets, o-rings exc are saturated with the previous coolants detergents. In some cases different coolants will create acid when it comes into contact with the old.. now if you have rebuilt your motor, replaced all gaskets, o-rings, replaced heater core and radiator then yes you could add green or purple so long as its compatible with your make of car

Dirty Trucker Not even then, I had full rebuild on Chrysler engine, personal vehicle, everything was brand new or cleaned/de-greased during assembly and after about 60k on it seal went on the water pump, which I attribute to 'chemical reaction' between green 50/50 and block and parts that were designed to work with Mopar pink coolant. Olds Rocket: it doesn’t matter what seals you use or pump you use. Dex cool is specifically designed using silica and certain types of organic acids that is ment for aluminum engines., the acids themselves do not corrode seals its designed to prevent seal corrosion and promote cooling system cleaning., contrary to popular belief, there is no lubricating property to dex cool, there is with green as the glycol is oily in nature.... if your seals failed, i would look at quility of build and 60k on an after market pump is dam good.

What I've been told is Cars made before 1995 or with metal radiators can use the "universal" coolant. More modern cars will require a specifically formulated coolant especially if needs to be silicate and nitrite free. Universal coolants will always have a little bit of silicate and nitrite in it.

Toyota and idiots from repair chain-store in Belgium, Auto5, to be exact, put wrong coolant when I switched it to Winter liquid. I looked at it and it was a wrong color, I asked about it and received the same wrong 50/ answer : Older cars blah blah blah. Now my gaskets are shot and I need thermostat replacement, my coolant Temperature light is on and Toyota dealer is fixing it now for extra cost to me. Thanks but no thanks. Just wondering if you know how to troubleshoot the rad / ac fans on a 2006 Jetta 2.0T? Neither of mine is working. I took the big one apart, cleaned the spring loaded brushes up to make sure they move freely, still nothing. Fuses are all good... not sure how to troubleshoot this...

Just to be clear on this, I wasn't able to get a hold of orange coolant for my niece's Buick enclave so the kind I bought was a long life universal coolant that said could be used with any color and is green in color. (Which was not cheap by the way) So in this instance this would be ok I'm thinking?? was this person using just a regular coolant that has no universal rating that you are talking about in your video? So much paranoia with coolants and different types of fluids to be used in certain vehicles lol

The correct Dex Cool replacement would have been anything with VW G12+/VW TL774F in the specs, in your case. I've always used (even mixed) red/violet OAT coolants from different brands instead of the required orange GM Dex Cool in my car and never had a cooling system related problem. But it has to be OAT. The green stuff is HOAT. Contains silicates, and Dex Cool doesn't have them.

@mistergeopolitics4456

If the label says it's compatible then IT'S COMPATIBLE. These large multinational corporations are not going to risk massive lawsuits for putting out false information. In many cases, buying the manufacturers brand of coolant, oil, fluid is a waste of money. It's like buying Tylenol or generic. You're basically paying for the brand name with no added benefit.

I went with G12++ when I did a mayor overhaul on my coolingsystem in my 92 Corrado VR6. Didn't even think about the details, just the mixable and the corrosion resistance for the aluminium head. I have seen a drop in temp and it's long life also. Just my experience. Maybe the VR6 is a bit unsensitive to different coolants?

They usually require DexCool, but most will get rid of that after the warranty expires and will replace with a Universal Coolant or a different OAT Coolant. If you are still using DexCool and want to stick with that...change it frequently. Prestone produces a somewhat cheaper GM Certified DexCool Coolant. If your current Coolant is Orange...it is quite likely DexCool.

This is horrible advice. Why would you not follow instructions!? To save money? it won save money because there are good reasons why G12 or whichever coolant is necessitated. This doesn't specify what kind of GTI we are talking about but regarding the German 1.8T ones at least, the head is aluminum a well as IDK what else and the wrong coolant corrodes the aluminum. Need I say more? the corrosion is obviously horrible for the parts that are damaged but also, the corrosion results in gunk which then f***s up other things. If you use green coolant in a 1.8T, you are doing irreprable damage to many parts.
