Can It Go 270? | 2021 Ford Mustang Mach-E Range Test

When Ford released the range figures on the Mach-E, some started scratching their head. How is it that the Mach E, with 88kWh of energy on tap got a lower rating than a Model Y? This begs the question: How far can it really go? In my last test of the Model Y I managed 225 miles of range, can Ford best that?

Plus Super Chargers are getting crowded and you only get the fast speeds of you're not sharing a power line with someone next to you. Personally I rather not deal with Superchargers at this point. Not everyone wants a faster car, or harder suspension, less comfort, and the quality is much less than the Mach E. You mostly pay for performance and some tech in a Tesla. So I'll pass.

I find it really impressive that at mostly 70mph driving the Mach E gets more than its EPA range. I typically assume EPA is more accurate if you assume you're driving 55MPH with no HVAC, because that's what it seems to mean for most cars. This is a good thing for Ford: I think most people would rather be pleasantly surprised by their range than disappointed when they wanted to drive 70 for the full 270 miles.

Some EV's are designed to only use the middle range of the battery to extend it's life. My Volt would read 100% on the display, but it really is only at 90% of the battery's capacity. When it reads zero, there is 10% left in it. This kind of scheme is how you get around people's behaviors that damage batteries.

One aspect of where you live and are able to test electric cars is the much greater proliferation of charging stations. Probably 90% of US does not have this concentration of charging outlets, meaning not only locations but total number of electric "pumps". It will be very interesting to view this video in 20 years when charging locations are as common as fuel pumps. For now you are in EV paradise and most of the country is in EV desert. In much of US people commute in F150s, CUVs and SUVs, and it is rare to see an EV. But the change will come. It will be interesting to see how many Mach E and ID.4 are sold in my EV desert this year. And yep, the folks going 80+ mph in Texas are not going to get 270 miles from their Mach E. 🙂🤠

All range tests that compare to EPA results need to be performed at 55 MPH, since that is what the EPA uses for their speed test! At 55 the Mach-E AWD 4X can go 310 miles on a full charge even though it is rated at 270. Driving at 65 to 70 MPH is not a valid range test for EPA standards. Thanks for the effort.

The amount of CO2 emitted manufacturing -an 88 kWh- a 98.8 kWh battery pack is around -8.8 to 26.4- 9.9 to 29.6 tons. Someone living and charging up their Mustang Mach E (and getting 270 miles from a fully charged battery) in California will emit an additional 1.2 tons per year if they drive the 14,500 mile/year American average. If the battery pack lasts 150,000 miles, the vehicle's average CO2 emissions will be anywhere from about -141 to 259- 148 to 280 grams per mile ( -88 to161- 92 to 174 gCO2/km) before accounting for CO2 emissions given off during the manufacture of the rest of the vehicle's components. For comparison, a typical figure for a hybrid vehicle over the course of its lifetime would be something like 250 grams of CO2 per mile (~155 gCO2/km), where the figure includes CO2 emissions generated manufacturing all of the vehicle's components as well as CO2 emissions generated refining and delivering the gasoline it uses to market. So to state the obvious, it isn't clear that EVs like this are better in terms of CO2 emissions than hybrid vehicles even in California where the CO2 intensity of electricity generation is lower than the national average, but if they are, at best they probably only represent an expensive way to achieve a modest improvement that could be achieved more economically in other ways.

Alex, I usually enjoy your unbiased reviews but I have to admit this review is not really up to your standards. You seem to compare this to the model Y however the comparison seems to be biased. Maybe its because you own it, I don't know. Let me explain, You mention the range of the Mach E VS the Model Y but your speed was different. You mention the Lower starting price of the Mach E but fail to mention the model you are driving is $6K more than the Tesla Model Y Long range and the Mach E 0-60 time performance is less. I have seen several videos where the Mach E would not connect to the Electrify America network and gets a fault that is a big advantage for the Tesla Supercharger. I hope you do a new video with an accurate comparison of the 2021 Model Y(Bigger Battery than the 2020) to the Mach E. Look forward to seeing that video.

I don’t like full electric cars, you never know your range depending on condition, especially here in canada., i prefer plug in hybrid, that allow electric on shorter range and use the gas for longer range without thinking if you will do it or not. I look the other day at 5e station between ottawa and montreal, and you better plan your trip. Also electric battery rely on china minerals. I don’t want that. Also these vehicle are difficult to get due to battery shortage. The pollutions to create these batteries is greater that the use of gas engine for many years. Also having some station does not mean you have a spot available. It is not like the gas pump you know will be free in few minutes..

That's awesome. I love the conservative estimate for range. My Fiat 500e is overly optimistic which is annoying because I have to plan on less range than it says I have. But the good news at least is that the 500e will still go for at least a mile once it reads 0% (I haven't had it actually die on me even when it says it was out of battery).

The estimate might only be conservative for people living in California, where winter basically isn't a thing. For people living in, say, Wisconsin, for a good chunk of the year the estimate is probably wildly optimistic.

In a gasoline hybrid sedan you pollute less and you can have a range of over 400 miles. Then, with a 5 minute fill up at a gas station, you can go another 400 miles provided you drink enough coffee. I once drove from Willits, California, to Tajuana Mexico in one day, so I know it is possible.

I know there is a lot to factor in but I would be curious to know how much it cost to drive the car 200 miles. I sold my Prius but it would go 200 miles on 4 gallons of gas @ $ 2.70 per gallon currently =$10.80. It's simple to calculate a hybrid. I'm sure I will be attacked for this lol....I retired from a fossil fueled power plant which is what will power an electric car. Is burning coal better than burning gas ? I realize renewable energy is out there but it is not going to replace fossil fuel anytime soon.

Depends on how one drives the car and their electric rates if we're talking about around town stuff. For my car I see its about 2-3 cents a mile; on the gas car it's about 5-7 cents depending on fuel prices.

This Mustang Mach E looks better and better. I was considering a Toyota Rav4 Prime, but now I might just pull the plug and go completely EV because of cars like this one and the upcoming Ioniq 5. BTW, you've had a lot to do with that change of mind. I've watched many of your videos over the last year and you've slowly changed my mind to go full EV. I'm currently driving a 2004 Prius (with 275,000 miles), which when I bought it brand new and fully loaded, was considered the most technically advanced highest MPG mass produced car in the world. Time for an upgrade. Thanks again for all you do to inform us, the car buying public.

so let's have a discussion about the $4000 Power delivery system you have to put in at your house to charge the car in less than 4 days. I don't know about you but my head hurts just thinking about all of these ridiculous questions usually when you go in and buy new car its how much does it cost? and what does the car come with. The sticker on the window says it gets 35 MPG and generally that's what it gets 2 minutes to fill the tank and you're on your way.

For all the tech and the 340 kw charging available the Mach E will still be hampered by the often horrible charging network of EA and EVGo. It’s a beautiful vehicle and looks like it’s well made. Take a long trip, see what it’s like to have to move from plug to the next repeatedly and most times have to contact the customer support to try and diagnose the issue. Often it’s taken care of by a fairly quick reset of the station. But as I experienced in BFE Oklahoma at a Loves Country Store on a cross country trip, none of the 4 units there would work. I had to limp down the road at 35mph hoping to get to a station that would work. Cool looking car.

Range test videos are great but I don't see the point of them anymore. Range anxiety just isn't a thing anymore. Regular ICE vehicles get maybe 400-500 miles off a full tank and they only got that sort of range I'd say the last 20 years. For much of their history no one gave a shit about their range or fuel-efficiency. But suddenly with electric vehicles now people care about maximizing range and efficiency? 200-300 miles on a charge is more than enough for everyday driving. I like to see the car manufacturers improve but where we need to see improvement more is in the charging infrastructure and charge stations. But I still don't see myself charging an EV like a gas car. I'd just charge at home and it would seem unlikely for me to have a low battery during daily commute. The only concern would be driving on a long trip.

After the initial battery degradation of 5% that occurs in most all EV batteries, I'm sure the mileage will be more accurate to the 260-270 mile range. Probably the smart move to understate out of the factory.
