Are you thinking about getting Muscovy ducks? There are some things to consider if you live in a cold climate. This video covers some great basic information on keeping Muscovy ducks in winter. You don't need heat lamps or fancy duck houses to keep them thriving, but you do need a proper diet, a dry shelter, lots of straw and fresh drinking water.Hi there, I'm Kaylyn! I'm a stay at home mom raising my daughter on our 10-acre farm in West Michigan. We raise show quality Nigerian Dwarf goats, Muscovy ducks for meat and color, chickens (for meat and eggs), grow a large garden and use organic growing methods, and strive to implement regenerative agriculture and holistic livestock management practices as we expand our breeding programs and perfect systems that allow me to navigate the life of a farmer, mom, wife and domestic goddess (while still remaining sane!).

To make a long story short, my neighbors moved away and successively took all of their livestock but couldn’t catch this one Muskovy duck so they left him. That was first of July. I have one of those plastic kid pools in my front yard for when I get hot while I’m mowing yard. He’s already taken that over. It was two weeks ago he started landing on my roof right above my bedroom exactly at sunrise. It’s like clockwork depending on the 40 something seconds this time of year the days are getting shorter. I tried feeding him pieces of bread when he first got here but he had nothing to do with it. He still flourishes. It was three days ago when I was sitting in my rocking chair that he walked to my front porch. I got some bread and he actually let me feed him. I know I should feed him sparingly because they are foragers. The reason contacted you was how Muskovy ducks should be prepared for the winter. Thank you for this video. It has taught me much and I think this lone Muskovy duck will prosper. :-)

Try giving it leafy greens, like lettuce, and berries. Bread is not really good for ducks. I'm learning myself.

Thank you for sharing! I could see Muskovy ducks like to go around foraging, but also like to be in areas without snow. I’ll keep that in mind. Going to start with khaki Campbell ducks this spring to learn & get their eggs.

Very excited for you! Let me know how you like the Khaki Campbell’s. I’ve thought about getting some for the eggs, but I just don’t know if I want to mess up a good thing lol. My Muscovies are so happy here a d so self sufficient, I know another breed would need a greater feed input. But I love duck eggs and we don’t get many extras to eat because we want them all to hatch.

Nice duck house, good diet to. I used to give my ducks a couple of chopped hard boiled eggs, as an excellent protein, just once or twice a week. Watching from England 🐦

Welcome John! Whereabouts in England are you? My husband and I were in the UK for our honeymoon, we visited London and Northumbria (Alnick Castle area) and some seaside villages in England and also stayed in Edinburgh. Such a beautiful country England is, I sincerely hope we'll get back there again someday. Thank you for watching.

There is a little abandoned young Muscovy duck in my neighborhood I live in a warm area but it’s been around 50 degrees lately I led him to a canal behind my house and put him in the water with food but I didn’t realize until I put him in the water how cold it was outside but I live down south so I’m sure the duckling was okay hopefully

If you are down South then the duckling would likely be fine, yes. They are so hardy.

My Welsh Harlequins are laying now, and my goose laid 20 eggs in December. All of them went into my incubator. Only 4 hatched, but for December I thought that was ok. I fed the ones that didn't hatch to the pigs, and they loved it.

@@FableHillFarm We're in central KY. It's been plenty cold here, too. I'm wanting to get Muscovy ducks for meat and eggs to add to my flock. Right now I've sort of stumbled into breeding Silver Harlequins. My prize female is white, with some reddish speckling on her wings, with royal blue bars, and her beak is black. She's gorgeous and just started laying. I'm afraid the eggs won't be viable due to the cold. I have 6 in the incubator, though, so we'll see in about 21 days now.

Hi I'm Pam from St Anne Illinois. First time having mascovys I have 4 hens and one Drake in got them in the spring after they feathered out! And yes at least 3 of the girls are laying! My question is do they need a nesting box? And if so what size? I collect the eggs.
@johngoose1497
@johngoose1497 3 жыл бұрын
Pam Cooley. I find they tend to lay anywhere on the floor, but are much better with a box especially if your going to breed. Size, anything they fit in, about 18" by 20" open front, even a rabbit hutch with the front off, anything will do if its dry inside 🐦

We do have nesting boxes for our Muscovies, but sometimes they will make their own nests in random places no matter what you do. They are very independent birds. It is also very common for them to co-parent, whether that means sharing the nest and actually sitting together or just sharing the duty of raising ducklings together. It's very cool.

@@pamcooley5012 Pam. If you put fake eggs in the nest box they will start laying in it, instead of anywhere in which case you may not find the eggs till there old. The fake eggs work really well & are sold at tractor supply , 1 or 2 will do. Good luck.

Is free rangeing better for muscovies
@FableHillFarm
@FableHillFarm 3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. Muscovies are insect assassins and will be healthier and require less care (feed, money and maintenance) from you if you let them free range. However, a lot of people can’t do that for various reasons. They do well in enclosures too...but you’ll have to up their feed significantly.

@@FableHillFarm While I am going for a winter fishing, I put small fish into the tank 1meter x 1meter approx. Temperature is about -5C. With a thin toilet paper (news letter paper...there are some harmfull chemicals)...it is enough they are alive. For ducks, I suppose, they would get the water with no problem.
