Thank you so much for explaining the correct push ups; I’ve been doing them all wrong. I’ve been doing them the inch worm way. 😮 After watching this video I tried the push-up by keeping my abs tight and my back straight and have noticed the difference. I have decided to challenge myself by doing push-ups everyday starting at 5 reps and working up to at least until I’ve mastered it. (And will continue to fit them in my other routines. 😊

Before menopause, I was able to do push ups from my toes - and good form - with little trouble. A few years post, and it's a huge struggle. This video was so enlightening. Thank you!

I am so glad to hear you say that! I thought I was the only one that all of a sudden struggle more then anyone else. I am stuck at the elevated height with goes to about my knees. My body just won't go any lower and it has been such a frustrating time. I have watched other videos like Lucy Lismore who has great points to and said how it took her 8 or 9 months I believe. Others have said it's about a year. I feel much more motivated after watching this video. Redefining strength is so amazing. She always has fantastic tips that others don't talk about.

I pulled something in my shoulder when I got too enthusiastic about doing a lot of pushups. I am not sure if I was not warmed up enough, or maybe it was overuse injury. It took months for my shoulder to stop feeling weird when working out, but now I wans to do pushups properly. Thank you so much for this piece of information!! You are a machine, and if you felt you need to regress, what about the rest of us??? Love your videos!!!

Last June I started doing push-ups from my kitchen counter! Then the bench, then floor and now I'm doing them on my toes! I use push ups as a warm up excercise for my light upper body days. Great video!

This was so illuminating! I'm in my 60s and had been struggling with push-ups for quite a while, even though I do lots of weight training and have great upper body strength. Only recently did I start to 'get' it, but having watched this, I realize that I've been starting to do just what Cori is recommending, i.e focusing on shoulder strength and pushing shoulder blades together. I had also been doing a lot of planks and dolphin to pushup movements. I just wish I'd seen this a couple of years ago - it would have saved me a lot of trial and error.

I had a similar experiance, although I have been lifting weight for years and getting better I couldn't do one single push-up. I knew it had to be technic but didn't make the connection to a full body coordination. This is a great video

I was doing pushups exactly as you described. Then I started doing the 'arrow' way, first inclined and then slowly erasing the incline. I couldn't believe the difference in muscle tone and strength when doing them properly. I was also doing rehab on a shoulder and combined my new pushup method with the stretches you recommended in the rotator cuff video. Incredible difference after only a few days!! Thank you Cory!!!!
@samday6621 Жыл бұрын
Hi Cory, I’m coming from the other direction (so to speak) as a landscaper with strong back muscles who started yoga (particularly Ashtanga) to address poor stomach muscles, to protect my back. In Ashtanga yoga we do a lot of push up like moves (chutterunga) and we are told to keep our elbows brushing our chest (close in, not flared) and often told not to dip so low that our upper arms dip lower than our elbows (less than 90 degrees). I’ve found I’m developing shoulder pain a day after yoga and realised my elbows are not close to my body. Also, I’ve had to on several occasions, let go of ego and regress to a very simple modification (picture an apparently strong looking male in a mostly flexible looking female class. - looks can be deceiving!) Addressing form over difficulty was so beneficial! And I’ve noticed with many exercises (yoga or free weights) that correct form is much more difficult, but far better. I’m just interested in your thoughts on having your elbows tucked close to your body, and stopping the pushup at 90 degree arms.

I'm in my 50s and didn't think I needed any help with my pushups. The instant I tried this technique I could feel the difference. You're absolutely right. This is probably why I frequently get rotator cuff problems when I do too many pushups. Thanks!

I'm glad I found your channel. Now I understand why I struggle to do a push up. I injured my shoulder years ago and physical therapy didn't help. Over time, the right thoracic area became extremely weak, especially the right scapula muscle. Lately, I've been strengthening my up back (paying special attention to the scapula muscle) and using tennis balls to release the myofacial tissue. My right scapula muscle is getting stronger. I'll give it a little more time and then start doing push ups. Thanks so much.

@@redefiningstrengthOC I am wondering if you can do a series from start to finish on training to be able to do a push up? I used to do push ups in my early 40's (one round 5 at a time and did them all day every day totalling 75 each day.) I was so happy and my upper body showed it! *****Like you said in your video I obviously didn't have the correct form another hint was I could only do 5 at a time and it never increased during one interval. I had to stop because my shoulder blades would be in so much pain that I would literally shreek it hurt so much. I hated the fact that I couldn't do them. Now I am 52, healthy eater, with slim build being in decent shape I would say and have been working on push ups for about 5 months. I am 2ft off ground in elevation but my body refuses to go any lower. I have been doing weights with dumbbells at home and stopped doing push ups to strengthen my muscles but now when I try doing an elevated push up its even harder :-( I guess I should have continued to do them as well as doing weights. My point is that the average person like myself is lost and is super frustrated. Are you willing to do a series to help? I would greatly appreciate it and I am sure many others would too =>

Thank you for the great, detailed information and visuals! I'm 67 and never worked out until 5 years ago. Just subbed, and look forward to seeing your other vids. Training for a Spartan in 2023.

A word about burpees. My trainer up north had me at 64 doing some burpees. My Fl trainer said she didn’t recommend those for over 60 as it’s rough on the joints. I guess there are 2 schools of thought on this. I have not been a fit person & not starting to get into shape until my mid 50’s . Maybe because of that, as I was not athletic all through the years? 🤷♀️

This was exactly what I needed. As a yoga heavy oerson-i was starting to hv shoulder pain, most likely due to the back to front imbalance. A lot of yogis wind up with serious rotator cuff injury if they don't make an effort to counter balance all the pushing up movement.

I had this struggle, never being able to do a proper push-up. If I did some on an inclined surface, I'd really load my arms and shoulders and tired quickly. I could tell that I was doing something wrong but didn't know what. One day, as I was doing cobra pose and lifting my chest up, engaging the upper back muscles it occurred to me that it was a similar pattern in pushups, just that the body position was different. Repeating the cobra and then trying to do push-ups on my knees but always being mindful of engaging those back muscles I quickly started to become faster at pushups, do more of them as I had a lot more strength.
