Been watching Robin Mathews-Williams on youtube and your walking-in swing is something he does too. His videos led me to the Flow-motion golf videos and it looks like you all share a similar concept on the golf swing which I am trying to embrace myself as my 65 year old body seems to painfully reject most of the standard golf magazine swing advice. Nice to see a Canadian teaching this stuff, keep it up. I'll be avidly following your posts.

Hey Shawn, Greg here. As you know my habit is letting the left knee buckle and head sway. What I've been doing lately is a little 1/4 Ricky Fowler takeaway practice turn at address to ensure I can feel the weight transfer to right inside foot so that I know I will be firmly planted during the back swing, as well as aligned with my intermediate target. If not, I widen my stance a pinch and adjust the takeaway angle. Works for me. Hope to see you sometime this summer! Greg

Right on Greg! A nice takeaway waggle to feel that everything is in place is a good way to go; like in the "mile markers for balance" video in our premium channel!

I love your videos and you've helped me improve my game. I try to relax during my swing but I think I am getting stuck focusing on hitting the ball instead of going to my target and then I am chunking some of my shots. I'll keep watching and someday I'll make the trip to get a lesson in person! Thanks again!
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi Luis! Don't try and relax; just use a task that IS RELAXING like feeling a nice effortless whip through the stem towards the target; keep the focus on the sole of the club and how nicely it deflects along the ground that way; feel that the swing's energy dissipates at the TARGET, not at the bottom where the ball is.

Thanks! It's all coming together mentally and I think it's where I was getting stuck. Thanks again!

Shawn, at about 8 min you brought up Stenson, who is more weighted right leg @ setup. If you recall me from last season in Phx, I came over to you years back from ppgs where he instructed his players to do that setup (same for Marcus on the forum!). So, not too bad for the setup to do so? I know too heavy left brace does give me front knee/hip pain at times. I do best in a neutral setup. jim.
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Hey Jim! The key is to feel solid from the trail leg into the front leg and even if the set up is neutral, or even more on the right side, that it gives you a sense of continuous motion through the ball to a target; the ones I don't recommend staying there are the ones who sway off the ball and get stuck at the ball on the downswing.

Do you have to think about this if your wrists and hands are responding to the weight of the clubhead and you're just swinging with the arms naturally? I love the step drill. It's a goodie.

Shawn, Great as always. "Coming from behind to get the back heel", do you have more videos on that topic ? here or premium Thanks

This is gold! Somehow I've been putting excessive weight on the bracing leg and not enough on the trailing leg all these years and it made staying inside the feet without swaying such a difficult thing. Thanks for an eye opening explanation! It makes a big difference in how crisp I can catch the ball consistently! Elephant walk is once again fun and effective with this thought in mind!

Love your videos, Shawn....The content relates closely to the Harvey Penick school of thought. Which in my mind, is the simplest, most straight forward style of approaching the complexities of golf.....My body works much better on the course when my mind isnt filled with a bunch of technical nonsense....I only need to know how to groove something naturally and dynamically, not how to perform something with a 15 point checklist....Thanks, again.
@johngoes457 жыл бұрын
At around the 10:25 point you did a tempo with cadence call, "one, two, three". I've had a lot of success with this cadence but with the aid of your "pause" video my cadence call is - "pause, plant, fall" - same cadence but words strongly associated with key points of your teaching. Now I'm trying to see if I can groove my right shoulder "falling down" instead of pushing out (for a big pull.) I can have the target clearly in mind, but still hit the pull. In all your videos your right shoulder and arm fall down but I haven't seen a video that addresses grooving that beyond target awareness.
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi John! Do you use an intermediate point? Have you seen my latest videos on alignment?
@johngoes457 жыл бұрын
Yes, and yes! One new habit I've acquired is to waggle by moving the club in the takeaway path aligned with my intermediate point so I can "see" that path occurring in my swing. That seems to help reduce the pull some. I've noticed that I'm more likely to hit pulls with the longer clubs, 5-iron and up. The plane feels more horizontal with the longer clubs and thus the down and under feel can get lost if I don't pay attention.

Question. This is perfect for where I am right now and I think I was overdoing the setup as well. When you do the elephant walk it appears that you are putting nothing into your arms or hands or even shoulders to swing the club but only using the momentum created by the "walking motion." Is this what you feel when you play as well? I find I pull the arms club unit through with my arms and shoulders so I am doing the lunge you talk about.
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Exactly! The kinetic chain is what pulls it all through as your mind stays in the direction you want this chain to release!
@jawjuh10057 жыл бұрын
Wow! I was WAY off base! I always felt tension in my arms and hands. Now your concept of Lose Control to Gain Control makes sense. The arm/club unit goes where it will on the back swing and through swing based on momentum and target focus. Totally different feel for me. THANK YOU!!

Hey Shawn! I love your videos and your teaching philosophy. However, there is something that I seem to be missing that is keeping my golf swing from clicking. Are you hitting down on the ball with every club? Or sweeping through?
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi Vimal! The way your anatomy is designed, combined with the length of the club, gets you the desired angle of attack if you simply use the club's sole to cut grass ALONG THE GROUND like a grass whip; see my videos with the grass whip; you will naturally have a steeper angle with the shorter irons and a shallower one with the long irons...
@vimalmittal56037 жыл бұрын
I noticed that you left heel goes off the ground during backswing. Is it a good idea?
@reid37377 жыл бұрын
Yes that's fine. Some people do it, some people don't. Depends on flexibility. The plant foot should hit before you start swinging though.

Hi Shawn, I went with a new net, 'Spornia' auto return also, a little smaller and less expensive, 7x8x7. So far so good. Great instructions! I think my biggest issue beside swing too hard was coming it too steep. We talked about making sure the handle was past the ball when you strike it and you finish your swing after you strike the ball? I think I just figured it out. Thanks for your insight! Walt
@waltreyer797 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn, Just another thanks to you! Here is where I'm at with my swing: no early wrist break as suggested, keep the small letter 'y' in my takeaway to complete full turn, stay centered , keep some pressure on lead foot, keep head behind ball through impact. I let the force from the club head pull me through impact to finish? I concentrate on a straight lead arm and striking the ball with the club head first to keep me focused? Swing speeds 82-92 consistent with 7 iron shooting for 87 MPH. Had some awesome 3 wood swing speeds, you wouldn't believe them. Goal is to get a consistent tempo with good timing. I practice everyday, full swing chipping and putting. I have a desire to get back to single digit H.C. I've been all over the internet getting teaching tips. I believe you give some of the best teaching advice! I believe the most important part of the swing is being able to connect the club head to the ball first at impact? Thanks again, Walt

Hmmm.. I bowled for years and was a five stepper L R L R L. My brother was three L R L. The weight is all on the left foot at delivery and the throw is like an under arm pitch, right handed of course. That just doesn't seem right to me in golf unless it would be R L R L four.?? All that movement seems very difficult to me. cheers

Here is a potential problem with this drill. Ideally in the back swing your head needs to lower. The same is true on the down swing. If you watch when he is doing the drill his head is going up on the back swing, so this is training the body to stand up in the back swing. A drill must reflex and support the true actions in a golf swing. Take care with this drill

Sorry but you are wrong. I would direct you to the wonderful work of Wayne Defranesco. He has clearly shown Hogan and Tiger for example lower both in the back swing and down swing. Standing up is a death move. Now there are some who remain neutral in the back swing like Chamberlain. Please direct me to a great player that stands up in the back swing? Otherwise your drill is flawed and please go back and correct
@d.c.stewart53367 жыл бұрын
Wayne Defranesco books are stolen rubbish. All players that swing as a human and not a machine move there body as it was built. Tiger is a prime example of why you need to move your body. Multiple knee and back surgeries are the result. Most of the new generation will be short lived and damaged from the swings they use. Nickulas, Watson ,Floyd....all had long playing lives because of the movement in there swings.

How then does Rory get his squat in the down swing? To me, the head moving down in the back swing would lead to fat shots or at least the need to stand up through the swing which could lead to a topped shot or a slice.
