Best instruction in golf, I have prisms in both eyes and cannot read putts with my head down and turned left to align so I now understand the issue, thanks so much Shawn also my driving has got so much better after following your leg actions and loosening up so now I swing with a much more casual feel. Thanks from New Zealand.

Not to take anything on youtube for granted, I tried this on the range Shawn. I set up my intermediate target and hit my 4 iron one length F8 iron. This is the hardest club to master due to the strong 4 iron loft on a 7 iron length shaft. My club head went to the right of the intermediate and I was hittting push. I was suspecting that hitting to the right of the target was, in my feeble brain, keeping the face open. Then I figure, what if I RELEASE to the target - wallah, here came the draw. I went back and you did say "release to the target" - that was just as important to me as the intermediate target. Good stuff, thanks Shawn!

This is an incredible video and a profound insight. This exact this happened to me at the weekend. For 6 holes I hit everything 10-15 degrees to the right. When I finally realised it was just my aim that had been off to the right, I remembered to use an intermediate point again, and I began to hit everything reasonably straight with no swing change at all. This video makes so much sense. Keep up the good work Shawn

This also works for my putting, especially the longer putts. I used to look down the line over the ball, then when my eyes came back to the ball I hadn't a clue where I was aiming, just a vague area. Now I pick an intermediate point, line up on it and keep the picture of the line and feel of pace in my head. Another great vid Shawn!!! Another short game vid please!!?? I've just subscribed but I've watched your vids for the last 2/3 yes. You saved my game.

As a right-handed golfer who is blind in his left-eye (doesn't even know his left side exists until i look in a mirror) this is exactly how I began playing better golf last year. Once I'm over the ball I NEVER look out to the target again, just that spot a foot or two along my starting line and let the club swing out, down. and back around ME. For 20 yrs. my "side vision" with one eye was so distorted every shot was a weak high push to the right or I would try to correct and manipulate the clubhead to the target. :( This is a brilliant explanation of how to overcome how our vision targets objects normally and while playing golf. Shawn does a great job communicating how we have to understand ourselves. Thanks

Superb teacher. One of my favorite videos. Basic principles of motion rule. I always have to remind myself to use the setup principles that conform to human design. If I do, I find the results are more predictable. The struggle is defaulting to old habits of guiding and ball focused swing because the effortless kinematic sequence doesn't work with a faulty setup. So much fun to feel applied wisdom in golf.

Sounds like you were talking directly to me! Side view alignment has been my biggest problem on the course. Never had it explained this way before. I have been intentionally aiming left to correct my distorted side view "wrong" perception. I plan on playing today and will get behind the ball and pick an intermediate target and then I will trust it! Even if I look sideways and it feels wrong. Thank you!! 🏌️♀️

Excellent analysis. A while ago I started lining the club face with something in the fairway (er, actually most of the time, the rough) in front, along the target line, that I notice while standing behind the ball. Even a single discolored or off-colored blade of grass/weed will do.

Shawn you teach a different alignment and setup then traditional methods when hitting a straight shot. You like the golfer to feel they are aiming a little right with a strong grip. I would love your opinion on what challenges we face when lining up and setting up the traditional way to hit a stock straight shot

I couldn't count on my "side-vision" over the ball off the tee or on the fairway, so this makes getting around my subconscious easier -- thanks! How would one make an adjustment after lining up a putt? Over the ball on the green, my eyes don't agree with my plan from behind the ball. If I line up the putter perpendicular to the line I decided while behind the ball, and it looks like the ball would go left of the hole, my subconscious compensates and causes me to push the ball right.

Great video! So, after we address the ball, should we not look up at target so not to alter our focus?
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Don has a very good answer; When you do look up to the target, it is to feel how you will swing into it with the set up that matches the intermediate point; not to confirm alignment. Swing through the side of the intermediate point you want to start the ball on and also confirm the direction of the takeaway with the intermediate point; see "stay with your shot shawn clement" and "Blind draw and fade shawn clement"
@wjhall3075 жыл бұрын
So are you saying if you want to hit a fade it's left edge and if you want a draw it's right edge? Does that mean if you want to hit it straight aim over center of intermediate point? Or did I missunderstand?

Yesterday at range was frustrated by 30% hard pulls even with target clearly in mind. Then I saw this video this morning and I hope it explains the pulls. Sometimes I'm confused though on what to concentrate most on - the intermediate point or the target. I'm an above average bowler and my most successful days are when I zone in on the intermediate point and see the ball roll over that point. I'm wondering if I should concentrate more on seeing the club pass over the intermediate point than on the target "out there."

Shawn my guru. Can you explain more about "...out to the picture". I have been a premium user since last summer and my game has been raised to a completely different level with your help :)
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Hi Eric! You choose a ball flight; starts on a certain line and ends on another and peaks on a certain height. The release out into the picture means the line you want to start the ball on.
@alb76685 жыл бұрын
Eye dominance is involved here as I understand it. Nicklaus is left eye dominant and as such has an advantage in that his dominant eye is closer to the target, be it the intermediate aim point or the actual target.
@golflessons5 жыл бұрын
It’s way more than that; it’s the fact that the vision from the side cannot AT ALL BE TRUSTED. you simply cannot use it to line up, nor to confirm the line after taking a look from behind. This is why you need an intermediate point just a foot or less in front of the ball. Then stick with the intermediate point for delivery of the action!
@SvingitGolf6 жыл бұрын
My coach told me to look where my left shoulder was pointing, and it pointed more to the left of target. Is that true that the ball will go where the left shoulder is aiming? I allways have had problem with aiming.
@geojor7 жыл бұрын
I have a habit of not finishing the arc of my forward swing, it's like I want the club to go straight and stop, so going through the intermediate point doesn't mean going straight through it, right ? you still have to go through it and finish in a semi-circle ?
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
You want to LET THE CLUB RELEASE YOU towards the intermediate point; but it starts with you getting ready to fade or draw the ball! Never get ready to hit a straight shot!!
@joegriggsjr.65116 жыл бұрын
Mine eyes mine eyes. Shawn, I can only use one eye to line up, my eyes have different views when use together as opposed to only using one eye to find intermediate target. Yet, when I line up I feel like I am aimed left. But you said it, my swing bails out. Thanks. Don't listen to the lies. You're like a preacher. LOL Thanks a 1000 X's

There are days where I easily see my intermediate target and play lights out. Then there’s days I feel like I can’t find one at all and I play like I’ve never touched a club before. What are some things that keep you from being able to find that intermediate target?
@golflessons Жыл бұрын
A great trick when you can’t see one is to do a few swings back and through brushing the grass next to the ball and making a nice wide scuff along the ground and then backing off and facing the target and see where the scuff mark is aiming compared to the target and use that as a reference!

"Swing in the direction you want to start the ball." This is at odds with my previous understanding. I thought you had to point the club face where you wanted to start the ball, and swing either side of that club face to enact the fade or draw. This could explain why my attempted fades often end up straight, or straight pulls.
@chuckross88392 жыл бұрын
Shaun , You had a video , showing you putting towel in the underarms and saying you don't want to do that. But you have said you want the left armpit connected through the ball ? yes - no ?
@golflessons2 жыл бұрын
I have said “it happens” naturally when you are on the right task; task blows everything away; stop worrying about placing strings on Pinocchio and “whip through grass with a grass whip” or “throw a club through an intermediate point towards a target” and when you get good at those, you then watch the action on video and your jaw will drop at how amazing the swing looks. DON’T DABBLE IN THE TASK THOUGH…WAX ON WAX OFF!!
@matthewh88165 жыл бұрын
Hi Shawn, Question for you. I do exactly like you mentioned with the intermediate point. I’ve tried to use this my whole life as it was taught to me early and is the most taught alignment technique in use today. My problem is, I pick my intermediate point, I can stand there for 5 minutes, line it up, same point same point same point. Ok, I’m good to go. I get over the ball, I’m trusting my alignment. If I drop an alignment stick at my feet and at the clubface, I’m setup aiming so far right every time. It’s not that I “feel” like I’m aimed right, I literally am aimed right ( way right )and verified by the alignment sticks. No matter how much I try, happens over and over. Any tips for me on this? I’m left eye dominant so I’m not sure if that plays a role in my orientation as I walk up to the ball, but I align my clubface to the intermediate target, line my feet up to that, and I’m aimed way right almost every time. I’m really hoping you can help me here. Thanks as always Sean.
@golfwisdom-francais97265 жыл бұрын
I see this all the time; you don’t realize you are still using side vision to line up instead of only using the intermediate point. The intermediate point can only be inside a foot. When you set up to a one foot putt, you do the same?? Don’t think so!

So very common! The problem, now solved, is that you were trusting the wrong eye sight!! NEVER trust the side vision and ALWAYS USE an intermediate point INSIDE 12 INCHES to guide your initial alignment AND the initial direction for your swing's release!

The people I play with will say "You hit that right where you were lined up to go. I would have said something I but I figured you were going to play a draw" Nope. Not playing a draw on a 154 yard par 3 with an 8 iron in my hand.

Yes! Once you have the line and have pictured how the ball is going to roll into the hole; it is OUT OF YOUR CONTROL and all you want to do is let the weight of the arms and putter roll the ball into the picture; see "putting focus shawn clement"
