Love looking back at these videos as they are so relevant still and always will be. These nuggets that Shawn is dropping off for us are how the game is played. You can find solid impact using just this video with every club in the bag. Thinking that the low point of the swing arc was off the lead shoulder wrecked my game for a long time because that is not where solid impact was. Once I oriented my low point properly, solid impact was sitting right there waiting for me with every club in the bag. Then you just have to aim it and you are off and running learning the game. Thanks Shawn.

@slmmcgee86863 жыл бұрын
The low point does start a little forward of center due to center of mass/pressure shift in the swing. However, the ball needs to be contacted first before the club interacts with the turf. So while the absolute lowest point of the swing arc is going to be a bit ahead of center in a functional swing (though probably all the way under the lead shoulder), the ball is generally going to be played more toward the center so that it is struck first.

Hey Shawn, I’ve watched many of your videos, and like many, fought off my feel swing, what you so passionately teach, trying to have the perfect “looking” golf swing. The only cause and effect should be where does the ball end up. Because of this I’ve never been confident of where the ball will go, which creates all sorts of anxieties and swing adjustments. I watched several of your videos yesterday evening, which were in line with what I’ve always felt I truly should be swinging. Went to the driving range today following what it should feel like- and wow. No more guessing, I can tell you where my ball is going, although now I’ll need to re-gap my clubs, going 10 to 15 yards farther. My driver is 285-305 carry, flush on the sweet spot (using foot spray for impact feedback). I’ll be working on draw and fades, but currently have center to baby draw. By moving the ball position I can control both flight patterns, so fade after watching this video is easily understood. I’m 57, somewhat muscular guy with some lower flexibility issues from past lower back issues. This swing has no back tension, where the more traditional swing (whatever that means) causes stiffness after every game. The analogies you use are great, make perfect sense! Keep up the great videos and you teaching of the game. I’ll let you know when I have my first scratch game. Randy

@Robert-yi8hh3 жыл бұрын
I have watched some of your videos on Draws and Fades. For some reason, there is a small confusion about the aiming (alignment) and the face of club. It would be nice to have a drawing or graph to show the club face, stance, and ball position for draws and fades. So if I understand you correctly: for a draw, the club face is pointing to the target (flag), the stance is aligned to right of the flag, the ball is position slightly behind of center; for a fade, the club face is pointing to the flag, the stance is aligned to the left of the flag, and the ball is positioned slightly forward of center. Is this correct? Thank you.

Question: Would you say the dynamic position at impact with the left shoulder higher, right shoulder lower, hips opening toward the target, would actually place the swing bottom more under the left shoulder? Always looks that way on video of good golfers? Jack Nicklaus always felt he was placing the ball off the left heal with all clubs. Seems like one of the biggest problems for golfers is trying to get back to their static address position at impact and hitting "at" the ball, rather than swinging through toward the target with a natural athletic motion and an impact position worlds different from the address position. Always appreciate your videos and willingness to share your knowledge!

Well, the ball position, unless way too far back in the stance will not affect the weight shift in the swing if you are FOCUSED ON THE RIGHT TASK. if you play the ball too far forward to have someone chase the ball to shift the weight but they still don’t have the right image or task, you are not doing anyone any favours. Please see “throwing the club shawn clement” and “throw the club straight shawnclement” then see “predict solid contact and direction shawn clement” and “grass whip training series shawn clement” Film your swing face on when throwing an old club towards a target about 30 yards out; not too far and in a safe location please. So do you play every iron in the center / back edge of ball or center? Or does it move forward as you get into longer irons?
@squatman6006 жыл бұрын
I have been using more of a "Moe Norman" single plane swing recently and have hit many drives and iron shots "straight". I get that the swing is on a circular plane to a certain extent, but at IMPACT, you can determine ball flight by hitting the ball square and moving your body toward the target. Just my 2 cents! I am not very good right now, but I know I have hit some "straight" shots!
@jamiesloan72593 жыл бұрын
There is "reasoning" behind him saying not to try and play a "straight" shot. If you play a straight shot directly at the target, any kind of curvature either way is moving the ball further away from your intended target, as it travels through the air. If you start your ball slightly right and draw it back in, it's constantly working towards the target(or left to right, for a fade). Hope this makes sense... I used to try and play a straight ball too, until I figured this out.
@markholdenlanzarote3 жыл бұрын
7 mins 35 in. You say... with the draw take dead aim. With fade aim left. Question.. Draw dead aim at what? Target or intermediate point which is slightly right for draw? Thanks in advance.
@golflessons3 жыл бұрын
Ball back of centre for draw to start to right of target; which means aim to end target and release to the right of end target and use the intermediate point the way you want to be able to execute this. Fade is ball forward of centre which means aim left of end target and swing left of end target.

Great video - you mention the driver briefly, but there's the obvious difference you're catching the ball on the way up on your swing with that club. So, for a extreme draw example say, you'd need to have the ball on the tee in the center of you body and try and swing behind it so the bottoming out of you swing is by you back foot?

I like your stuff Shawn, that's why I watched this, and all you're saying about positioning the ball is very practical. But I think I'd get confused if I didn't realise some of your explanations are dead wrong. For example: - Low point has nothing to do with point of contact with ground. Surely it's after the ball for Shawn in each direction. Not under sternal notch. - Closing of the face during impact would have the same negligible effect on both fade and draw (similar closure rate). Besides, opening of the face during impact would create draw and vice versa. This is gear effect. - Lob wedge face direction does effect starting direction. Unless you shank it... Try it with ball above your feet.
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Above feet still goes straight; I demo this regularly; but that one is for another day; as for rest, a lot of golf instruction is for mental visuals and to het the point across the best way possible; it mostly depends on the shot you want to hit and how you predict the ball position based upon the action to target which is THROUGH THE BALL.
@mkr74657 жыл бұрын
At any point in time a flat club face can point in one single direction AND move in one single direction. Ball also launches in one single direction, which will be somewhere in between where the club face points to and where it moves to. Raise the ball so high that your dynamic loft becomes zero and I'll guarantee that a lob wedge won't go where your club face is moving. I guarantee that it will start left about as much as your normal launch angle for LW. It could be demonstrated if I had a tee longer than myself or glued a ball onto a wall above my head. :D But... I'll reiterate that I value your approach to golf. It's much appreciated. That's why I'm here.

If I do the perpetual motion drill while moving my centre to different points around the swing arc, I get a very good sense of where my actual centre is and how it feels to be too far back or forward. It's not that difficult to move the bottom of the swing to different points but moving it forward is less balanced for me. I find that having the low point a little bit back of my visual centre is where my swing feels the most free. I didn't expect that but I'm glad that I can now keep my weight inside my feet more easily.

Doesnt ball flight laws say that face has a much bigger effect on start line than path?
@Jeremy_Walker7 жыл бұрын
Joakim Fredriksson Yes. The club face is the major driver of the direction the ball starts; however, keep in mind, the ball would be influenced the most by a 0 degree loft and increasingly less the more loft that is added. Shawn is a feel player, and while a lot of his swing thoughts will get you playing better golf, quite a bit of what he says about the physics of golf is not entirely accurate. One example: Collecting the ball... ball touches club for a minor fraction of a second... you can’t change club face from the time it touches ball till the time the ball leaves face, so in this instance there is a disparity on what he feels vice what is happening. I'd suggest using Shawn's thoughts as guidance and then looking up Trackman or GC2 data to see what is actually happening. Edited- To lighten up.

Jeremy if you understand that the club face is dynamic or is moving as it touches the ball there is an influence on direction the ball.

You are dealing with ANGULAR MOMENTUM, OR AN ARC. The swing is not a straight line; so a straight shot would be a manipulation and therefore would bog down the swing and prevent it from flowing! See “hit a draw shawn clement”

i thought low point of arc was under left shoulder
@thomaslapras16697 жыл бұрын
That's why you are tilted. Draw a line between sternal notch and the ground and you will see the low point of the arc.

This is an illusion Larry! Those who state this low point are looking at it in 2 dimensions...the body’s lead side is already clearing behind the sternal notch as you approach impact...

where is the center of the golf swing circle located on the body

Wasn’t exactly what I was looking for but great tutorial nonetheless.

that swings got more movements than a swiss watch

Thanks! That is the way the human body is supposed to work; see “create serious speed shawn clement” and “horse shoes and lassos shawn clement” and “weight shift walking shawn clement” We are gravity geniuses! But if you try and stunt the swing with nip and tuck, we become gravity morons...the whole teaching industry is coming our way; Foley, Gankas, Wald, Chamblee...all coming back to what Jones, Snead, Nicklaus did...

Really all I wanted to know and why I tuned in was.... put it here, here, here for whatever club. This much analysis is too much for a hack like me. Just tell me where for each club to hit a basic shot. I can't even begin to think about working the ball
@golflessons7 жыл бұрын
Haha! This is where you are mistaken! There is no straight shot without big manipulation, which is a major power leak!! See “hit a draw shawn clement” and you will see it is not rocket science!

I never used the word straight. I said basic. Since as I high handicapper I have trouble making the same swing twice, I would find an uncomplicated rudiment like "place the ball here for a 5 iron" more helpful, at least initially, than a set of instructions that more apply to an advanced player like you, until and if I progress to a higher level
