I like how he breaks down the cost of leather bags because he applies it equally to all brands. Most of the bags he takes apart come from companies with overhead (storefronts, design departments, advertising, employees, and more). The way he presents the value of a bag illustrates his overall point: people are paying thousands of dollars for a brand name. For a long time, people assumed that "luxury" bag prices were justified because of quality, and I appreciate Tanner Leatherstein attempting to point out that isn't necessarily true. I've learned about many smaller leather bag makers because of his reviews, which I appreciate.

Tanner is very hermetic while dissecting the bags, which is helpful. He is not influenced by the societal allure of the must-have bag of the season. I do agree that women buy bags for more than just cost or quality - sometimes we just need the retail therapy. BUT...I will say he has changed my perspective on the word LUXURY. We've all heard of the Dior scandal, and we as a society will slap the term luxury on a piece of duct tape ( I'm looking at you, Balenciaga) I now ask myself, would I still love this bag if it weren't a "luxury brand"? Tanner has definitely left his mark on me.

@@desireebrown7869 great points! He's not influencing anyone, while he does have a business he owns, he's not actively poopoo-ing on the labels he deconstructs and then solely promoting his own. He actually has given some very good scores to brands like Coach and Salvatore Ferragamo and Portland leather, etc. Some of which (Portland, Saddleback), people could argue are in direct competition with his brand but he still gave them fair and high praise in his comments.

I think he has truly revolutionized the handbag industry worldwide whether we want to believe it or not. Even if his estimates were a big off, the massive price on these luxury bags, for the amount of popped stitches, bubbling glazing, hardware that shows wear within months, and leather that’s so heavily coated with a plastic film, it’s almost a slap in the face to the hardworking class. He’s been in facilities that are making LV bags while they make Polene bags, so the same lady handmade with similar leather yet one is $5k and the other is $500. I mean there’s a reason, the CEO is one of the richest men in the entire world. Even if you take everything you’re saying into consideration, the decor, the location, the employees, you don’t become a billionaire without massive extreme profits, we can cope and try to justify that our expensive LV and Prada bags are worth it, but in an objective form- by analyzing the bag, hardware and design- it will never be worth what they price it at. I love how he is lifting the “illusion of luxury.” These bags are made side by side by bags that are considered luxury, so what truly makes it luxury to people? The idea that LV and Dior provide these prestigious just by the name. It’s crazy we wear a bag with a random persons name on it- like our bags literally say a dudes name. “ Louis Vuitton, Gucci, Christian Dior” lol it’s crazy! I absolutely love tanner, i think he’s authentic and down to earth and truly just spreading the truth of how we’ve been scammed to believe we are buying luxury and quality, when you can have quality and luxury at a fraction of the price. Saving our money and the time we spent working to acquire that money, i believe he’s a hero in disguise

I've heard him say there is nothing wrong with buying a name brand as a status symbol. He wants to educate people that that's what they are paying for most of the time, and if status is not essential to them, maybe look into indie or mid-lux brands that are high quality as alternatives. I found that helpful and used his insights to research mid-luxury brand reviews. That's how I found your channel.

I enjoy his content mainly because it touches more on leathercrafting. Your regular handbag influencer just doesn’t have the same level of expertise that he has, since all they can really judge are external factors. I wouldn’t take it as a deterrent to buy the bags though. Luxury is luxury. You buy them ‘cause you can. The price is never truly going to be about the quality of the bag. Having celebrity endorsers, fancy boutiques, etc. doesn’t come cheap and brands have to pay for those somehow. If you want it, just get the dang bag. No need to justify it to anyone. Saying “It’s worth it, ‘cause it’s good quality” never convinced anyone who questions you for your expensive purchases. Even hermes, who are known for their qood quality, are pretty dismissive of complaints regarding defects and just say “It’s because it’s handmade”.

That also applies to everything else in life. The cars we buy, the food we eat. His content is education and provokes thought. But I expect him go practice what he preach. I don't check if Tanner Leatherstein has done a review before I buy a bag. However, when I do bump into his content--it is a nice reminder that I am paying for a brand name and marketing and whatever else overhead comes with the luxury bag when I purchase designer. His videos doesn't stop me from buying what I like but it has definitely made me take pause to reflect on what I already have and what I wear the most. Would I buy a bag from his brand? No..but I like that hes shedding light into the leather world. I used to work in the wholesale jewelry industry and the estimates of an item will depend on how close (either proximity or having an existing relationship) a vendor has with the suppliers. And it was an eye opening experience for me to realize that the markup we pay in general for jewelry and any item really is brand recognition (I.e., marketing and merchandising) and...to some degree how that brand makes one feel. I believe Tanner leatherstein does provide a disclaimer that his estimates doesn't include the overhead costs of a bag. Great discussion and a reminder that we should buy what we love...but also it's not bad to know what the raw materials would costs to make a bag for consumers to make more informed decisions. 😀

I usually try to watch as many reviews of an item I'm interested in, so any information is welcome. I like that he is able to assess the leather quality and let us know if a company's claim of real leather is true or false. At the end of the day, I will buy a bag because I love the design, it looks good on me, will be durable, carefree and functional for my lifestyle. I'm willing to compromise on some of those factors if I love the bag enough ( for example buying lambskin/sequinned bags, buying a mini bag that holds just the basics or a bag that has fussy opening but knowing full well those will be occasional bags rather than everyday bags). I know TL doesn't like leather with heavy finishes (eg saffiano/caviar) but I personally like them because I feel they are carefree. I had a look at his bags and I don't mind dupes but unfortunately nothing appealed to me. I appreciate that he doesn't heavily promote his bags and it is more a hint/suggestion. At the end of the day, he has a business to run so I don't mind the subtle promotion. Its no different from youtubers doing sponsorships or getting commission from links.

I have very much come to rely on Tanner’s expertise when choosing a bag. If I spend thousands on a purse, it’s because I expect it to be higher caliber materials & craftsmanship- otherwise i can almost always find a similar design for a MUCH more reasonable price. Tanner’s vids help me decide if I’m paying for something that will truly be a legacy item, or if I’m paying for perceived prestige, forced exclusivity and marketing budgets (none of which I feel I need to contribute to). I can then make my decision based on all of the factors. And yes, sometimes that means buying a “vegan leather” Vivienne Westwood, simply because the design is unique and I’ve fallen in love. 😂

I own a small startup high end handbag company based here in NYC. His pricing is ridiculous (full grain leather at $3/ per square feet! this is absurd). My full grain leathers alone start at $30/ per square foot material only. I think the location also plays a role. If he can source his leather /the materials for their tannery from a county with much cheaper production cost, then his estimate would totally make sense. I don't look for approval or base my purchases on any influencer in the market or even people in my own life. BUT, I will take their suggestions and expertise into consideration. Tanner is good at his craft, but he does not know everything, nor does anyone else. A subject matter expert will miss things in their expertise often, if they do not understand what draws in customers. An LV Neverfull bag is $1960 for a piece of canvas, and some leather strips. That's all you're getting. But you are not buying it because it's canvas and some leather strips, you're buying it because it's LV and it's on trend. Or was. BUT, he is bringing to light how sooo many people say these luxury brands are sooo much better than the mid price point options or the lower price points as well, and showing us that it just is not true. At a certain point no matter what leather you use, that handbag is only worth so much, and the rest is payment for that brand's upsell. For some people that is a hard line, and for others it's not. But thankfully he IS bringing it to the light and letting people know half of these luxury brands are just padding the wallets of their billionaire owners and playing us for fools.

I watched some of his videos in the past. I stopped when they all turned into the same formula of "designers are ripping you off, I can do it better". I know that most of the luxury item's price is the label, can we get over it? 🙄 Also, YT deleted my comment from your previous video. I loved the bowler bag from W Concept and I'm expecting a delivery!

NO. I don't think he is trustworthy. Do people not research at all anymore? He SAYS he has tannery experience thru his family but there's no proof. And if he is an expert, he didnt need to learn about craftsmanship from someone else, that guy in switzerland who seems to make better pieces and know leather better would have been more qualified to be an expert. Worst part is Tanner puts down many brands because this gives him room to also push his own brand. This is genius marketing but its a scam. Tanner also said he works with factories in Turkey and Spain? So that means he does not even make his own products. And why did he never dissect his own pieces? How no one sees thru him is mindblowing to me 👻😊

Hi Niki great video I felt this was an extremely fair yet comprehensive review of his brand and where and what his specialty is I totally agree with the analogy of he’s a contractor doesn’t make him an interior decorator it’s extremely obvious that he has very limited fashion sense I think I trust his review of leather types and quality of those types but you’re right he doesn’t discuss the brand history or the overhead involved so I concur trust his opinion with leather and leather types everything else with a grain of salt 💚💚💚

I always go to Tanner’s YT videos prior to purchasing a “luxury” bag for his expertise on the leather as I respect his expert analysis. You referred to his collection as dupes but most brands including contemporary brands and more affordable brands do the same so that doesn’t bother me. Personally, I’m more interested in the leather quality and the craftsmanship. If I like the style of the bag and the color coupled with the leather and craftsmanship it’s a win. But in no way am I spending thousands of dollars on a handbag that I will most likely tire of in 2-3 years.

Great video. No, I don't check Tanner before I buy a bag. Tanner talks about what he terms leathertainment a lot and that's what he is, an Entertainer influencer in the leather space. However he ain't the handbag equivalent of consumer reports because he owns his own handbag company and will always have his own agenda because of it. It becomes really obvious in videos like his latest one about The saddle stitched Hermes wallet. I found it a bit disingenuous when he turned the video into whether HE himself should offer a saddle stitched wallet, subconsciously equating himself to Hermes. I think I hurt myself from rolling my eyes.😂 To misquote a famous debate, I know Hermes. Hermes is a friend of mine. You, sir, are not Hermes.😂

What qualifications exactly would he need to compare then? Is he not a leather craftsman like an Hermes craftsperson? He is successful enough to own his own business. This kinda comes off as pooping all over another creator because you have some personal issues or jealousy going on. He clearly worked long and hard to get his brand and create his success. What company do either of you own and run successfully? Nobody's perfect but dang, this comes off so disingenuous and just... Catty? Cliquey? Ick.

I am a leather lover and bag lover so of course his work was interesting to watch couple of times.. But it is pretty useless to watch as do I really need the acetone test ? do I really need to know about the inside stitching etc.. when we (women) choose a bag for various reason . We consciously overpay some bags just because we love something about it and often we are not even wearing it , but we still love it. I dont think he can understand that so if he tells me how some Loewe bag is having average lining or the leather is tanned in a bad way that is not going to convince me not to buy if I really love the bag. 😄🤩 So all in all useless, his nickname is ridiculous , those bags he is selling are sad looking (having said that, I dislike APC bags, Sezane and others..) and voilà. 🤩

Clearly there is a marketing, brand, paying for all the stores and flagshipstores all over the world, paying the SAs, and designers who came up with the design. It takes decades to build a brand. Also making dupes of somebody’s design is just awful.

I laugh whenever he estimates the cost of leather, he uses the same unit cost across brands, it’s like saying the fabric cost for Zara is the same as the fabric cost for Chanel, even the layman knows that is not true. There is a huge difference in the leather used by brands, Hermes uses the best leather, and they only use the best portion of the calf, hence more scraps.

I looked at the bags on that website. Meh. Not my style. Very rustic as you mentioned. Just not something I’d purchase. I also agree about vegan leather. It’s basically no better than fast fashion because no matter how nice of a piece you get be it jacket or bag it lasts a year and starts peeling. I learned that lesson the hard way with a quilted Moto jacket that I absolutely loved and paid far too much for only for the shoulder to start peeling a year and a half after I got it.

Why are you pooping all over another creator who built his own successful brand? Then evaluating his leather bags like you have years of experience in leather craftsmanship equal or greater than his experience? He literally has togo lines of leather that are clearly labeled and advertised that way, but it seems you purposely ignored that or left it out entirely. And Togo is essentially equal to Hermes in some ways. He also has used his wife in multiple videos to get a "woman's perspective", and he did all "all weather test" on the Dooney bags recently. He's testing the claims about the leather because he's a leather craftsman, not a designer label snob. This just seems so unfair, cancel-cultute-y,...
