I got my cards from a booster box from what was always known as a reputable shop for games and cards and it now turns out that they're fake. So, it's not just Walmart. It's a huge issue and the only way to stamp it out would be for some kind of better identification system to be used on the cards when they're made.

I work at a card store and I see a lot of people, mainly kids, come in with fake cards. I always try to educate best I can on how to tell if a card is fake, where to avoid buying from, etc. it breaks my heart that people do this to scam people, especially kids.

@Vinny Venom the main way is looking at the card and comparing them to cards you’ve pulled from a pack. Any holos or textured cards aren’t usually done right (textured cards missing texture usually happens, foils looking muddled), seeing if the font is correct (size and font style), the size of the card as well. Some of the fakes have been pretty convincing lately and these are just some of the things we have to look for when dealing with cards. Generally if you have a question on if a card is fake or not, your lgs shouldn’t have a problem looking at the card real quick. When buying I would generally avoid buying singles from Amazon because a lot of fakes go through there. And look up what people are selling the cards on TCG heavy sights like TCGplayer to get an idea what the card is going for, because if a really expensive card is being sold super cheap, I’d avoid it.

There’s really no way to stop the manufacture of fake products. The best thing to do is, teach people how to tell the difference between real and fake. Pokémon cards, shoes, hand bags, clothes. There will always be a something telling the item is a fake.

I agree, you can't totally stop the manufacturer of fake products but at the same time but equallly we regulate retailers for a reason and I think it's totally unacceptable that someone can go to the website of a major retailer operating in their country, search for a product and be tricked into buying from some scammer in the far east. And it's even more unacceptable when the scammer and the retailer have ties to each other that go beyond the scammer just signing up for a regular seller account on said retailers website. The difficult but IMO is how to craft a regulation to prevent companies from blurring the line between retailer and marketplace sites, without killing off western-based marketplace sites entirely (which IMO would be a cure worse than the disease).

I remember buying a trainer box from walmart. They ran out of stock and used a 3rd party seller who sold me a box that was missing 2 packs. I left a review warning people not to buy from third party sellers with walmart and they deleted it.

amazon has the best customer service. i ordered a package, it said it arrived when it didnt. i talked to a bot and within in minutes they sent a replacement. didnt have to show proof or talk to a representative. very easy process although it can be abused

Law school grad here, awaiting bar results. (NOT a lawyer yet!) What a fantastic video, great work by both of y’all. Yes, section 230 is the law that can shield Walmart from liability based on hosting user submitted content, but I wish we had seen a little more about going after scam sellers using anti-fraud statutes + an explanation for why that’s difficult-to-impossible. (Spoiler alert: it’s pretty hard to collect a legal judgment from someone who doesn’t live in the country and can just set up more fraudulent storefronts online if one gets taken down.) If this video tempted you to start your own scam business, don’t do it. Just because Walmart gets to wash its hands clean doesn’t mean you do. People who got scammed could go after you in ways besides collecting a refund, if they felt inclined to spend a lot of money to do it.

My rebuttal to LegalEagle would be that the platform (walmart) isn’t merely a “hosting a communications channel.” Walmart and JD was more than a little fiscally connected. Walmart has a need to pull these down because they are most assuredly taking a cut of every transaction, even for companies they aren’t… directly partnered with. If the dude that runs the bar knows there’s a blackmarket set up right outside the door of the back office, is the bar owner complicit or responsible if it has been brought to their attention? I’d wager a bet and out good money on the bartender being culpable for being an accomplice, whatever the official term would be.

From a legal perspective Pokemon technically doesn't have to act on any of these copyright/trademark infringements - they have the choice to protect their IP but like you said they're likely too busy to hunt down all of these counterfeiters whom may just pop up again under another shell company name. Great video in bringing awareness to this situation. I've been seeing in a lot of forum posts people asking if a certain card they got was a good hit, but it ends up just being a fake Pokemon glossy card 😔

There needs to be an update to scam protections, whether it’s Pokemon or car warranties. People are getting scammed, employees in customer service who can’t fix it get yelled at (not always but still way too much), and nothing is getting fixed because the big corps won’t bother to fix the issues. Company’s can only prevent so much, but if they have slip ups they need to have a reliable and efficient way to fix it. That means clear cut instructions for customers that the company sticks to. If a scam happens, they need to prevent future ones from occurring and refund the customer. Ideally the scammer would foot the bill, but in the case that can’t happen the company responsible for the fake product being sold should be able to pay for a fake booster box. If they are frustrated by that then they can take it up with all the customers who were scammed without any refund partial or otherwise.

If you would prefer to have fake cards, to see what the set kinda looks like. 4. To Make It rain fake Pokemon cards so you don't damage the real ones.

This is very disheartening. I have been in contact with the company multiple times and they 'have no answer' as to when their return center will open. Very disappointed in the way that the Pokemon Company has been treating their customers.

I found a Booster at target on the shelf and was fusion strike for like 96$ on clearance 😳 well they were fake too and I had to threaten my way into a refund. Not proud but they wanted me to eat that 100 when they apparently made a mistake and don't even sell those on the floor! That was apart of their reasoning for why it seemed weird and scammy to them. As I said, not proud but got the job done

Thanks for the video. Unfortunately knock offs have been around since the beginning of time. Even if every collector could see the video the problem would continue. There's grandmas, kids and unfortunately those people who just want to believe they found a good deal. I still remember my mom telling me someone from work had a Babe Ruth card for sale for $100. I think I was 14 and I told her it was probably a scam. I always believe that if something sounds too good stay a way it. We need to teach our kids to be better buyers. Question the advertisements they see. Look for good deals. Look at the place selling it. Research when in doubt.

Aaaaand this is exactly why I don't buy my Yu-Gi-Oh cards in stores like Target or Walmart because yes,this is also a huge issue too. It's literally became a meme in the YGO community that some of these stores will sell counterfeits or "Big box bundles" that are just common/Holo cards that's waaay less then the value of the product. You can grab most of the cards that would be in that box for cents,not even a dollar in most cases If there's no local card shop near you folks don't be afraid to check TCGplayer. Do not subscribe to legal eagle as he often just gives generalization of the law that do no pan out, like here. Section 230 protections are not limitless and require providers to remove material illegal on a federal level, such as in copyright infringement cases.

I didn't realize, until recently, how bad it is. Sadly, I'm so paranoid about fake cards or RESEALED packs (another issue out there 😣😰), I even question legit companies and local small businesses. It makes my heart sad to know that people actually TRY to take advantage of others to make a buck. 💔 I don't know if there will ever be a day that we can say the scams are stopped. When we try to have something to help us determine that the cards are legit, like when ripping a card and seeing that black in the middle, scammers are in the shadows trying to figure out how to make the fake cards have it too. I got one from the local convenience store down the road from me and opened it and it was fake as hell, didn't have a code card in it at all and one of the cards was clearly missing out of it bc it didn't come with the right number in it, I went back and asked the owner if they knew anything about it and if it was an employee that went through the trouble of resealing them after taking the code cards and big hits out or it was from whereever they ordered it from selling fake cards and never got an answer and i tried to figure out more bc i felt like it was a bigger thing than just being scammed out of a card or two or out of every pack.....

My brother has a card shop /official Pokemon Store here in germany, with Pokemon Officials comming there once half a year to check on the competitive scene and how it can be improved. A store nearby sells those fake cards. My brother asked, why they don't do anything about it and they said "why would we? Anyone who plays this game will immediately see that those are fake". Like wtf. When people do a Fan-Romhack for free, Nintendo / Pokemon Company sues their asses up (Pokemon Uranium). But if people next door to your official Pokemon Store sell fake cards, everything is alright. I feel like these fake card manufacturers are paying Pokemon or something. Otherwise this just makes no sense.

Subscribed as this is an extremely concerning phenomenon. No reputable company should be selling or partnering with sellers who aren’t 100% upfront about something being fake when selling it. At minimum it is misleading or dishonest, and at maximum it is outright fraud, malevolence, and greed. Aliexpress is obviously filled with knockoffs and it doesn’t try to pretend that they are real, after all, as the maxim goes, if it’s too good to be true, it probably is.

I only buy from either the Pokémon center website, tcg player, or trusted ebay sellers(which there are many). Have yet to get anything fake.

I know some people like these fake products to put on display. Even though they are not real, they still like this affordable option. But this also puts fans in danger of being sold fake cards by a third party.

ngl this happened years ago with my family when my mother bought fake yugioh cards 20 years ago for me and my brother. my mother thought they were real... but me and my brother ages 5 and 7 at the time instantly knew they were fake and had a good laugh at the fake names they had on the cards and enjoyed them as a gag gift. my mother did not know that they were fake untill 10 years later when she found them digging through my stuff. It happens way more than you think, this happened 3 times when i was a kid and my mother probably spent like 400$ on both me and my brothers fake cards.

As a mom of a special needs son. He’s 10 but has the mind of a 2 year old. And he loves pokemon cards especially the really pretty ones. I don’t mind buying fake as long as the description says so right up front. The only other thing I found he can handle without ruining the cards is slabs because of the hard plastic but those can get really pricey.

it is like trying to take down those scam call center in Mark Rober and the other youtuber channel.. Think it is easier to be a rocket science engineer than taking anyone of them down. Spreading awareness is the key here. letting the people around you know that there are fake product by sharing this video and the previous one so they will not fall for it if they decide to get some for you.
