As a quilt shop owner and pattern designer, I applaud you for your tactful addressing of a huge issue! I, like you, spend a lot of time assisting others in their creative pursuits and to have someone blatantly rip off My Idea for a quilt and present it as their own is so disheartening. Especially when the Original Quilt is on Display in the shop for all to gain inspiration from! Just give credit where credit is due. It only makes the person copying you look foolish later when the truth comes out. Because it Always does. I am a recent subscriber and I have to say I love your channel and your creativity. Enjoy your day! L

I love seeing the creative conversation that develops when makers like you and k3n share your individual takes on a technique or process. It enriches us all and encourages each of us to find the path that works best for us. It's good to remind everyone that sharing credit literally enriches the makers who work so hard to bring us this content.

Totally agree! I think so many content creators are educators at heart, and of COURSE we want other people to learn and then build and change and evolve work into something that is their own. But it is both a matter of respect and a matter of helping others to learn and grow to cite where you got ideas. It is like citing work in a great book-and then you read the footnotes and discover a whole library of other books that influenced the writer and helped form her ideas, and then you go read them for yourself. I think part of the issue is that many of us put all these videos on in the background so we don’t always know WHERE we learned something. But when it is an art piece like your dots or some of these journals or this flower or whatever, it’s important for people to at least bookmark things they found interesting so if they are passing that information on to someone else, they can direct other to where they first learned it. I hope that makes sense! I’m enjoying your videos from Florida, where I am a photographer and publisher and mother of two who would probably sit on the sofa all day watching videos and embroidering if left to my own devices. ❤ And I loved your fireworks!!

Beautiful stitching today! Can't wait to have a go at it. And thanks for the chat about plagiarism. I think for the most part people are unaware of how copying applies to crafting and posting/selling. So your explanation was educational for those who just plain don't realize what they are doing is wrong. I've been crafting and taking classes for many years and you're not the first artist that has had issues with plagiarism. So thanks again for the explanation about creativity and respect.

You really hit the head on the nail. There is a distinct difference between being inspired and copying and I truly think if people look into their minds and hearts they know when they have crossed that line. But some don’t care and that’s the problem. Now a days where every one can see and post on social media, it is like the border for what’s allowed ore good behaviour is flowed out the window. So from my experience ( I both on YT, FB and IG and Teacher) don’t show anything in public spaces I don’t what to see copy of. There is always someone who don't follow good behaviour. That being said, most people are giving credit where credit is needed ore ask if it ok to they share things they have made inspired by me.

Hey, Jeri! Good for you for standing up for yourself and for sharing the idea that plagiarism extends beyond written media! This is all too often overlooked. As a quilter, I hear of others sending copied patterns to others. Some of these are FPP patterns that sell for over $60! I can generally create a quilt from a picture if a quilt, but I still buy the pattern- sometimes even after the fact. The only time I haven’t is when the pattern is not available in PDF, and the seller doesn’t ship to Canada. As for written plagiarism…I was camping near Albany with a group of my camping friends. There was a woman who had joined us that week. By coincidence, She was taking the same online college course as my friend from CT. They had to post their assignments online every Thursday. That woman was complaining that 2 of the students were not posting their assignments until late Wed or early Thursday. Her issue? She said that she would cut and paste sections of their assignment ps, and since they weren’t posting until later in the week she didn’t have time to do that!! My friend and I just looked at each other in disbelief. To this day I wish that I had taken the woman to task. How could she not know that this was a flagrant form of plagiarism?! Every school addresses this issue, and it’s always included in college info packets and in course syllabuses. Clearly, the prof-or TA-for the course did not pick up on this, but it appeared that the students who were plagiarized did. My CT friend’s assignment in another course was extensively plagiarized by another student. She brought it to the attention of the prof. She was shocked to see the other student on their zoom calls. According to the college’s guidelines, he should have been expelled. Thank you, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦

There is something I learned very young, but had trouble following from time to time as I grew and matured; that is "Be careful to be equally yoked to those you hold dear". That's in friendships, partnerships, marriage, business etc. The reason, as explained to me, is for protecting your heart from immeasurable pain and longlasting damage. Unfortunately the world we sometimes have to deal with has no regard to the caring and nuturing side of humanity and therefore tend to disregard and go willy nilly waltzing over others. I am so very glad that you shared your heart with your viewers and I pray that it is received in the sincere way that it was presented. Truth can sometimes be very difficult to navigate, but is always important. I love your projects and even though I haven't yet viewed all of the videos, I know that I will continued to be inspired. By the way, my name is Deborah, I am 71 years old, retired from government work, married, grown children, several granchildren, many more great grandchildren. I am number 9 of 10 siblings and every day I feel blessed to be able to continue my journey and make things that my others smile and give me a sense of worth. XOXOXOXO!!🥰

Good on you for standing up for yourself. Plagiarism is pretty ugly, odious and it is theft . It's not nice to have this happen. How graceless and lacking in self esteem these people must be. I love your circles and sometimes think, "I wish I thought of that," and laugh at the child in me who thinks this. I don't have a KZbin channel as I know the amount of work that this entails is not something I want to do at 75. I have seen those who do give credit to those who have inspired them and I really appreciate this because it gives me the opportunity to go and look to see how the ideas are adapted and developed. I have never given any creator a thumbs down! How awful is this? It gives me a yummy ache just thinking about what it would be like to be on the receiving end of that. You know, though, Jerri plagiarism, thumbs down, and rudeness says absolutely nothing about you or your work. Nothing! Please just focus on all the good things. I know it's hard. For some reason, our brains fixate on the negative. Protect your precious heart. Arohanui from me in Aotearoa New Zealand ❤

So much to think about as I know how you feel about this. I was going to take this conversation to the Facebook page but then thought to myself, no that is a positive place and this topic can be very negative. When I was teaching, I always did have those students who just had to have their piece look exactly like mine, but my heart soared if a student asked if they could change things out. I would get giddy and really encouraged especially in the more advanced classes to have them look beyond my design and make it their own. And early on with Facebook I would see those people either tag me or have others look at what I was offering. Here is a small example of what you are talking about getting hurt. One woman took off with what I had initially taught her, she never truly developed her own style which I think you know what I mean. She started to teach. One day is a conference I heard another attendee ask if she was inspired by me as her work looked so much like mine. She shrugged and said “ she could never teach me. I did this all on my own”. Talk about stabbing in the heart. Yikes that did hurt. But I see this same thing happening in all art but especially in the bead world. Women attacking each other and having their minions go after each other. Down right ugly. This was one of the reasons I quit teaching. Plus, I always hated making kits. So I believe if you are inspired by a teacher, mentor or influencer acknowledge that step in your art.

Hey Jerri, love the flower. I would just like to affirm your thoughts on intellectual property protocols. You have ownership and rights over your intellectual property just like any author, inventor, computer game creator, or anyone who creates something new. Your solution is elegant. People inspired by your creations just need to credit and acknowledge you, just as there would be in other mediums, such as magazines. I’m fairly new to your channel, but it’s one of my favourites now. Just starting to work up some dots, great fun. I look forward to future videos.

Hi Jeri. You're right about plagiarism. It's mean-spirited & incredibly discourteous. I regularly bookmark images on Instagram that inspire me to try recreating them, Then feature my version on my craft blog. But I name the original maker & provide a link to their Instagram. I want blog readers to try making their own version of that original too. We're so blessed with an abundance of free creative content online, but it can be overwhelming. Can stifle our own creativity when we simply passively consume it. So we need to also make stuff. It matters that we're actively creative. Sorry, this is long-winded, I'll stop typing now! Thanks for posting your videos, Jeri. They're appreciated. Val x

Just a note, i wouldn't take thumbs down super personally to mean that someone watched your content and didn't like it... i'd more-so take it that youtube recommend your video and someone didn't have interest in that topic, so they hit thumbs down so they don't get stuck in a youtube algorithm taking them down into the wrong rabbit hole. Also, I've accidentally tapped or bumped or dropped my phone so many times and it disliked without me really hitting it. So, just know that it's probably not even relevant.

Hi Betty, that's interesting that you mentioned a pattern, I believe each pattern designer has different regulations regarding how their patterns can be used. Some designers do not allow sales of the finished pieces. That information would be clearly spelled out on the pattern. Thanks for bringing that up! @@JeriBellini I have thought about doing a youtube much like yours (and some others that I watch)- a bit from here and a bit from there. I tend to use the bits as inspiration and do my own thing. The bits would probably be recognizable by the person who inspired me if they happened to run across my channel. In any case, I would provide pointers to any channel that provided inspiration for the topic of the day. We all succeed to greater heights when we promote each other. I like your dots project. What I have handy is a pair of jeans that should have been retired years ago. I have about 30 or 40 4" squares all hemmed, about 10 with unadorned dots on them waiting for embellishment, and a lot of dots of all sizes to be added. If they show up anywhere on the internet, so will your name as the inspirer and "check out her channel". A few words about how helping each other succeed: During the Depp v Heard trial, I happened on EDB, a former prosecutor. From there heard about Rob of Law and Lumber, a family law lawyer who does wood working as a hobby and who did a bit on the broken bed as a one-off. Rob met Ian, a Canadian criminal defense attorney at the trial. There is a knowledgble court junkie, another is a retired criminal defense attorney with lots of appellate experience, another does civil law. These lawyers who didn't know each other, didn't have shows of their own, gave each other encouragement to have their own channel, promoted each other, had each other on their shows, redirected their followers to each other's channel, and so on. I don't know how many legal shows (they follow legal cases from court feeds) have come out of this but there are several, all of them successful as many people go from one to another because they all offer analysis from their own perspective. Like I said, We all succeed to greater heights when we promote each other.

@@JeriBellini My long post and I didn't address the question you asked. Your point about the pattern is well taken. I give, don't sell, so never paid much attention. As to people learning someone else's idea/technique and then getting paid to teach it, it's hard to enforce a prohibition. I share whatever I know but I don't expect payment. If I got it from KZbin, I would point to the person I learned it from so they get the whole story, not just my take-away. When I was china painting, someone who took a paid class from an well known artist frequently did a class for the club. I don't remember if she got paid. I wouldn't have objected if she did since she put out the funds for the class and she had to prep for the one she gave to us. The draw for the class was that she would be teaching what she learned from the "expert" (who had already been paid). More frequently she would demonstrate (share) what she learned, kind of show and tell, no remuneration. btw, An expert is anyone with a modicum of skill who is at least 50 miles from home; the further away the greater the expertise. At home she is just "one of us".
