Screen enclosures are cheap, easily accessible, and there's plenty of info on how to successfully keep a chameleon in a screen enclosure -- but I agree that's not to say you can't also be successful using a properly set up glass enclosure. It's all about finding what works for you. My apartment has an ambient level of 60% humidity, so glass isn't a smart move for me because the humidity levels would be too high in a glass enclosure for the species of chameleons I keep. The biggest issues I see when people use glass enclosures are that they use ReptiBark or other less than ideal substrates that aren't bioactive, they are way too small for the species of chameleon they are keeping, and the temps are too hot. The two biggest benefits IMO for glass enclosures are that they help keep in heat and humidity which is great for dry and cool climates like Colorado and the UK but not great for other keepers who live in climates similar to mine. Again, have to find what works for your environment. Bring on more chameleon videos :)
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
You said it, It's about doing the proper research to decide which make of tank is best for you. Blanket statements suggesting screen tanks are the only way to go is dangerous and irresponsible on the behalf of the party suggesting that. Thanks for tunning in!

I just rescued a veiled chameleon here in Colorado. He is currently in a 55-gallon long terrarium. I appreciate both of you twos content as I research what I want Gizmo's forever home to become. With his current setup, the humidity runs about 50% and gets up to 100% after I spray. Which I currently do two to four times a day. I think he was slightly dehydrated when I got him because he has been sheading now for two weeks. He has signs of MBD in his tail. So, I do think the shallow enclosure will be a good choice for a shot period while I give him calcium, UVB light, and get his weight increased. I am a new chameleon keeper but have several rescued babies. 4 bearded dragons, 2 geckos, 2 green iguanas, 1 tegu, and 1 black-chested spiny-tailed iguana.
@NeptunetheChameleon3 жыл бұрын
@@daydreamersdmmiller3064 I would suggest misting 2x a day and aiming for your humidity levels to be around 30-40%. Older chameleons take longer to shed and will shed in pieces -- this is not an indicator of dehydration. Dehydration is determined by the color of their urates. Please check out my video on how to water a chameleon to learn more: kzbin.info/www/bejne/qpzXhKRpo79snZY I would also strongly suggest not using the shallow enclosure and get him set up with a 24"x24"x48" enclosure ASAP. Reason for this is, is it will allow you to have the correct UVB gradients, temps, and humidity levels. There's no real benefit to having him in a smaller enclosure unless he is having a hard time holding on to branches and is falling. Here is my video on how to properly set up a chameleon enclosure: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pGOrXomrl6umaaM Best thing you can do for his health is make sure his care is perfect and give him time.

Great work, Mike, I used to keep my veild in a screen cage. I got sorta fed up with the problem of finding out how to not get water everywhere but still keep the humidity up. I ended up just converting it into a hybrid enclosure, and it works so much better, but still doesn't hold the humidity the way I would like. It still works, but if I could go back in time and make myself just get a big glass enclosure (with proper ventilation) I would definitely choose that. Great work on this, I'm glad you found a balance to keep yourself and your lizards happy.

With my business we often have to talk about the importance of ventilation versus a enclosure is just wide open or not open at all. I am hoping with my glass enclosure I am building for my panther that I will be able to have the ability to use some simple physics and allow air to move from the bottom and exhaust out through the top to help manage humidity levels. Have you ever built an enclosure from scratch using acrylic/glass sheets? Need to upgrade my veiled’s enclosure soon & am plotting building materials. The tanks that were in the video were custom built by myself. Swinging glass for a large tank doesn't work, sliding glass would be the better option. Just make sure you seal the wood, and create enough ventillation for a chameleon.

Do you plan to breed the cape dwarf chameleons? Have never been able to find any in Canada :(

I've heard they don't like the glass due to their reflection? I guess it causes stress? is that something you need to worry about
@MikeTytula3 жыл бұрын
I have never actually seen a chameleon get stressed at their reflection. If they did, reflections are based on lights. If you move the light, you will change the angle of the reflection which would likely solve any problems.

I live in AZ. Ambient humidity being often in the teens, sometimes less, glass enclosure has helped me greatly with humidity. Sometimes I catch him posturing to his own reflection. Anyone got tips to help with this?
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
I feel like there might be something else, unless the glass is perfectly clean there is likely not enough of a reflection

This really helped me because I’m soon getting my first vailed chameleon we already have a glass enclosure and we we were scared that we will have to go buy a screen enclosure too
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
Just make sure you have a proper setup, and you should be okay. Ensure you have a large enough tank as well.

Man, I bought a $200 glass tank because there was a damn picture of a chameleon on it. Screen enclosures are cheaper but I really don't want my tank to go to waste. Watching this made me feel better. I didn't realize until after I bought a veiled chameleon that they're really not great for novice reptile owners so I'm trying to read and watch as much as I can. I bought one of those all-in-one kits and realized afterwards that it really isn't.

Water is something else I'm trying to get right. I'm looking at here tall fountains with some fake foliage in it but need to do more research. For right now I'm misting the tank myself but my humidity isn't going up at all I think. Also, the bottom of my tank is this kind of coconut dirt? I've read that that kind of stuff isn't so good since they may accidentally eat some when nabbing a bug. I feel like it'll also absorb the excess water and get funky pretty quick.
@MikeTytula3 жыл бұрын
Just keep in mind, that a veiled will out grow a smaller 18x18x24 tank in only a month or two out of the egg. That's why you want to make the drainage layer. It allows all that excess water to drain out and not make the substrate layer go anaerobic.

I heard glass was bad because eventually your chameleon thinks it’s being attacked through its reflection and can die quicker
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
Nah, in most cases that’s not the case. Sure sometimes the night see themselves in the reflection and think it’s another chameleon but that’s on the keeper to adjust lighting and such to avoid those reflections.
@MrPurepecha872 жыл бұрын
Wow I totally missed your comment a year later but yes I agree with your set up, I’ve actually switched to Glass enclosure I use a DIY fog system that was only $8 and a mason jar with two drilled holes, it’s actually half Buried in dirt so it flows perfectly

Great video. In my case I have a veiled chameleon from a feral population in California were it has adapted to the 60% humidity which is what my room stays at, so I use a screen enclosure with burlap on the sides to hold extra humidity

So can chameleons be kept in glass? Yes. If you highly modify them. Which makes them a hybrid cage? Therefore not technically a glass enclosure?
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
You don’t really need to modify them

I have long wondered why humid loving animal was kept in a mesh enclosure, especially in countries with cold winters. Surely to maintain humidity would result in mould in the house in winter. I'm a frogger but entered the hobby wanting a chameleon but the mesh cage thing put me off. Another great video Mike!
@MikeTytula4 жыл бұрын
Ya for many environments (like where I live) rooms stay at like 20-30% which wouldn't work for chameleons. But we live in a world with so much misinformation from all different angles, that it's difficult to convince people that glass is often better than screen (depending on the circumstances). But someone will go to some pet store and they are just told that chameleons need screen blah blah blah haha
