I've been a Deputy for 20 years, and during my career i have driven everything from the 1995 LT1 powered Caprice, countless Crown Vic's, PPV Tahoe's, Hemi Chargers and even a 2010 Camaro SS that was donated to my agency. So with that variety in mind, I loved the speed and agility of the Camaro and the Charger, but at 6'5 and 220 lbs, the size of the Tahoe and my current Ford Interceptor Utility (Explorer) are the most comfortable. In the end, I'll drive what ever the fleet manager buys, but if it were up to me, I'd take a 392 Challenger Widebody next.

My husband is a retired officer after more than 28 years of service. He was a motorcycle officer for more than 12 years of that time. However, As he got promoted and job assignments changed, the performance and interior room was the most important. It wasn't the body armor that takes up the room, it is the gun belt he wore. His belt weighed 18 pounds with a fully loaded weapon and gear. There is a pistol on one side and a radio and Taser on the other, plus all the other stuff. Next would be electrical power and cooling ability. Police cars idle a lot. His favorite was the hemi equipped Charger. But he always said, if you could get a Crown Victoria with a 1996 Caprice police chassis, it would be the perfect police car. His last unit was a Ford Explorer police package, but he liked the Charger better, except for the Kawasaki and Harleys he rode.

As a current LE, in my opinion there is no one vehicle that is the best for everything we do. I work for one of the largest sheriff's departments in the nation so we have a lot of vehicles. The type of vehicle we are assigned depends on what section of the agency you work in. For our agriculture and marine units, they used F250' s in the past but those vehicles where not pursuit rated. They could initiate a pursuit put had to drop out as soon as patrol units caught up. Now we have started replacing the F250's with the F150 which is pursuit rated. Obviously a sedan would not be suitable to go off road and pull boats or trailers. A suv could do some of what it but not everything that is asked of the trucks. Our k-9 units have traditionally used the tahoe's. Here the tahoe's have to be able to run at high speeds and be pursuit rated. This eliminated the 4-wheel drive version so we had to use the 2-wheel version. The 2-wheel versions were lowered to get the handling needed to be pursuit rated. This made them not useful for the agriculture and marine units. Like the F250's they had been very reliable with few mechanical gremlins. When Chevrolet redesigned them a couple years ago, the price soared and it we could not justify the added cost to the tax payers. We began trying out the explorers and found they worked very well for K-9. They are puisuit rated, very similar interior space, all-wheel drive, better at high speeds and they have been very reliable. At the time Ford discontinued the Crown Vic, we used only Crown Vic's for patrol. For whatever ever reason we went to the chargers. We only use the v6 version and have no need for the v8. Reference top speed, the v6 is similar to the old Crown Vic but the handling is better. The interior comfort and standard options is much better but the size is much smaller. As a daily patrol vehicle, the charger is not a bad vehicle. There are some places Dodge could make improvements but have refused. The overall quality of the vehicle needs improvement. Brand new vehicles with less than 5k miles breakdown regularly. The interior materials are poor quality. Door panels begin falling with in the first year, seats wear out where the items attached to our belts rub, multiple a/c system failures, engine cooling fans come apart after 50k miles causing the fan to be sent through the radiator, heads are being replaced after 50k miles (many vehicles 2 or 3 times by 100k), front control arms every 15-20k miles, fuel leaks, fumes inside of vehicles and several more. Something that everyone hates is having to turn in your vehicle and moved to a fleet vehicle. The vehicle is our office and no likes to move into a temporary office every couple weeks. A couple issues that are just poor design is the fact that you can not go through standing water deeper than the bottom of the front bumper. The air intake snorkel is located behind the bottom edge of the front bumper, behind the left headlight. It easily sucks water into the engine. If you live in an area that gets a lot of rain or is subject to having a lit of flooding, this issue means the charger will not be usable. Last big issue is the trunk. The size is ok butt there is a full size spare mounted in the middle make the trunk useless. With all these issues, I still would not want the old Crown Vic back. Fortunately we are being forced to go with a suv or truck. We are now trying the explorer and F150 on regular patrol and so far, we have not had any problems. With the new explorer having better performance, much better fuel mileage and costing just a little more than the charger and a bit less than the Durango, our agency is most likely switching to the explorers and F150.

The agencies really really miss the Crown Victoria's. The whole reason for switching to these new cars was gas mileage and extra space. From what the techs that work on these new vehicles will tell you it's been a moderate failure. The vics could be maintained with little to no effort. Parts were super easy to replace after colliding with other cars for pit maneuvers. A few clamps and the vic could be returned to service in as little as a day. The fuel economy wasn't even that bad. They would average about 20-25 miles a gallon with hard use and sometimes more if you really babyed it. Most of the techs will tell you that fixing the new SUVs is crazy expensive and frustrating. Having to replace an entire front end after one pit maneuver will easily spend any money you've saved on better MPG. Fleets are supposed to be cheap to buy and cheap to maintain. Adding additional features like MPG and space cannot come at the cost of the core needs of these departments. The big manufacturers really came up short.
@TheTsunamijuan5 жыл бұрын
Thank the EPA's rather unreasonable fleet requirements for that, not to mention the other federal requirements when it comes to impact and pedestrian crash safety. That require more deformation on the part of the vehicle in any collision. You think the car market has it bad, the diesel industry is just getting destroyed by the EPA requirements. So many companies going under cause the new larger trucks are just not reliable due to the DPF systems. (not to mention actually get worse mileage when they are working)

The Durango looks really nice (it's a cool vehicle to start with) but it just seems like a regular street car with a bunch of aftermarket add-ons, whereas the Explorer is mechanically and structurally vastly different from the civilian counterpart (or so they say). A friend of mine is a police officer and I've seen where and how they drive them. The suspension takes so much abuse it's unreal. Also, I'm no fan of rotary knobs but the gear selector here, is just plain stupid. Perfect case for a column-mounted one both from the practicality/space constraints aspects as well as cops' preference.

I think the primary reason most agencies looked for new cars is because Ford discontinued the Crown Vic Interceptors. That was a good car. Not great, but good. They were fast enough to keep up with the bad guy until the bad guy crashed. If you get an honest cop, he will tell you that was pretty much the goal for a pursuit. I never drove the SUV versions. But I'll say this: for 99.9% of the things cops do, top speed is not the important factor. Ability, durability, good a/c, and really, really good seats, are probably the most important. I suspect that for these reasons, the SUV cars are probably the best bet. High speed chases don't happen very often. But sitting in a seat for 6 hours out of a 10 hour shift happen everyday. If there is good seating, good climate control, and good durability, I suspect most cops would go for that over top speed any day.

I've been a Deputy Sheriff in Florida for almost 6 years. I started with a Chevy Impala after Chevy Impala and now onto the Dodge Charger's. Honestly I like SUV's, more room, more storage, off-road clearance and capability. We actually just finished testing the Dodge Durango.The Chevy Impalas were fast but very tight inside (especially the backseat riders), uncomfortable, loud and noisy from the wind hitting light bar and road noise in general. I have had 2 brand new marked Dodge Chargers (2018 and now 2019), unfortunately like most agencies we only buy the V6 version. Current Charger has less than 2,000 miles. They are roomy up front, the new tech is nice (backup camera, touchscreen radio, and ambush detection), they ride smooth and feel good especially at highway speeds (unlike the Impala), and can you say quiet interior? You can actually hear the radio and when you key up the radio, they don't hear the wind/road noise while your talking. The V6 Charger unfortunately is very slow, slower than the Impalas in top speed and acceleration. The fuel economy is... lets not even mention MPG, my V8 F150 gets better.The problem lies in gear, we carry so much gear on normal patrol than in decades past. And depending on specialties the cargo goes up (SWAT carry extra guns/gear, Our riot guys carry less lethal weapons on top of the shotgun and rifle issued to everyone and more gear, and so far and so on you get the idea.)My trunk in the Charger is packed to the Rim of gear (medical go-bags, tactical go-bags, plate carriers, AED's, bulletproof helmet, flares, so on and so on.)Plus I am a Deputy not a Police officer so we have a whole county and non cities to patrol, which is mostly rural areas and more times than not need 4x4 to get places. I remember working the other side of the county and having to park my patrol car and walking to calls due to a car not making it, even the fire brush truck got stuck on the dirt roads.We have the AWD Ford Explorers for our K9 units and honestly you need true low range 4x4 like the Tahoe, new Ford F150 pursuit, or the Durango. I know in big cities ground clearance also causes issues for them a local agency in a big city had to get rid of the Dodge Chargers and went to Ford Explorers. They had issues when it rained (which is everyday in Florida) the Chargers would stall out due to the low air box (which has been fixed in the newer model).Also when your downtown and an emergency comes out they can't drive through 5 Blocks of backed up traffic, so they would jump curbs to get going where they need to go. Well the Chargers had issues bending and even breaking the frames. Needless to say they completely switched to the Ford Explorers and they are much happier.

With a high number of agencies going to NO or limited pursuit policies, the need for a rocket ship is in the past. As for Dodge vs Ford its a matter of preference. The Exploders are constantly in the shop for front end issues and if the turbo goes on an ecoboom be ready to shell out a lot of greenbacks. Dodge has its share of issues just like everyone else but with Ford eliminating the sedans your gonna see alot more of them.

One police department to another...it’s amazing how many people make room for you and then get mad once they realize you’re not a real cop. Out of all of the Interceptor and Pursuit packaged vehicles - the Durango AWD V6/V8 were the quietest, most comfortable and best handling over the Ford Explorer, F150, Fusion, Chevy Tahoe PPV, Dodge Charger, RAM 1500 variations. I work on these every day. I'm the mechanic for the sheriff office and these are all pieces of shit. The Durango is slow and junk chargers spend more time broken then on the road. Terrible front ends, push rod engines, just complete garbage all the way around. The only reason you see them being used is cost. They're cheap to buy, remember you get what you pay for. Hands down prefer the Durango. The Charger is nice on pavement but if you work in the county where frequently you are on rutted out dirt roads, ground clearance matters. For State Police, particularly in the west, a 118 mph top speed isn't fast enough. I routinely stop people in excess of 100 mph, and we need the speed to close quickly. The AWD V-8 Charger has been a great solution, but that's been eliminated in favor of a slow-accelerating V6 AWD option that's much less appealing. The Ford SUV is faster than the Hemi-powered Charger, but it doesn't have the fuel range required for the rural west. I'd like to see the Durango with the gear selector on the column, Charger-like performance numbers. and a larger fuel tank. That would be the bomb. (The AWD V8 charger was HUGELY popular a durable. Gotta wonder why FCA decided to dump it...)

The Durango is a very good choice for a Patrol or response vehicle for law enforcement, and they are well made too! That said if I had to spend 12hrs a day in a vehicle I would take the Charger for comfort, I think. It is so funny that I for the last couple months have been wondering if they had ceased production of the Durango a few years back because I just had yet to see anyone drive around any Durango anywhere at all for a good decade or so, with the exception of the early & mid 2000s editions of them. Then I see this video this afternoon, and save it to watch AFTER I got back from a shopping trip. On my trip, I saw at least four different people in that very model year of the Durango. Really interesting & odd to have never seen any newer Durangos for years until this evening after having opted to watch this specific video. Then they all come out to play! haha, timing is a strange creature! As for the competition - Explorers are absolutely everywhere and raved to hell & back by officers and entire departments right, left & center, while being called the ultimate police vehicle. That said, I am very curious as to if the Durango really has a chance at all to overtake the Explorer in departments, or if it's set in stone it'll take the back seat to the Explorers. I personally love the Tahoes so many departs still utilize. To be fair, they really aren't all that old either, so I wouldn't imagine they'd be willing to give them up from a new fleet just yet. Just like Crown Vics, I will hate to see the Tahoes go when they do.

I know this video is a few years old but as of 2022 models depending on how you order it the Durango can have either a 120 mph limiter or a 130 mph limiter. Ford has them both covered and if you order the 3.0 ecoboost it’ll go 151-152 with no lightbar. Also in 2020 when the Explorer was updated, it has a full frame instead of 2019 and older were unibody. Also since about 1998 and newer Fords are required to be able to get rear ended at 75 mph and not lose any fuel. They started doing that because especially highway patrol cars are on the side of the road a lot and a few of the old Crown Vic’s were catching on fire when they were hit. So all Ford Interceptors are able to get hit from the rear at 75 and not lose any fuel. GM and FCA squads do not do this test.

The Broncs were not Crown fast, but stable and fairly bulletproof, and there was room to fit comfortably in the seat with vest and all your belt gear. And, when mountain patrol was being assigned, guess who got it? Those with the Broncs. Today, I would take an F150 Coyote crew cab. Now, if you think the Durango is slow, let's talk about the 1994 302 Bronc I used for a while; dressed out with a mid-sized bar, top speed of.........82 mph. No joke.

You can't do a J turn with the rotary selector. While you can do it with a column shift. The rotary selector requires you to fish for the knob at high speed. Plus the tactile feed back is poor. This would severly limit the driver during pursuit/high speed driving. Lets face it most police do not drive slow. They spend alot of time at higher speeds, having to react fast.
